CYO Basketball – 64 YEARS! The Mercer County CYO, one of the greatest and probably the longest running youth basketball leagues in the State, celebrated its 64th Anniversary during the 2015-2017 basketball season. The league that started in 1952 at Junior High School #2 on South Olden Avenue in Trenton has come a long way to many different gymnasiums across Mercer County. The majority of the games are now played at the CYO Center at 920 South Broad Street in Trenton. The former movie theater hosts close to 400 games per year and has been called by many as the best school/ recreational gymnasium in Mercer County. This statement can be made since some major renovations to the gymnasium have taken place, most notably the restoration of the gym floor and the yearly touch up. It is a true first class facility that can serve more than grammar school basketball, proving this by hosting high school, college, and even professional basketball over the years. The gymnasium that hosts the majority of the games is part of the tradition and allure of CYO Basketball. CYO Basketball is as strong as ever in Mercer County, with over 50 teams still competing in six different divisions in recent years. There are about 12 different schools/ parishes that participate in the CYO Basketball League and even the recent restructuring of the Diocesan grammar schools could not diminish the league. Many parishes now enter multiple teams to give more kids an opportunity to play. The CYO has been the main feeder system for the high schools in Mercer County and has produced countless talented basketball players that have gone on to star in upper level leagues. If the walls of the “John Mincey Manczak Memorial Gymnasium” at 920 South Broad Street could talk, they would tell quite a story. Mincey was one of the original CYO basketball referees and was still active at age 80 as a scorekeeper until his passing in October 1996. It’s hard to imagine the number of players who participated in CYO basketball over the years, and the number of games played. It is the teams, players, the countless volunteer coaches and the history that makes the Mercer County CYO rich in tradition. We will continue to see new generations of families coming to CYO Basketball games with their grandchildren talking about their days in the CYO. The tradition will continue and the CYO Basketball League will continue to be among the best in New Jersey and the country.

HISTORY OF THE MERCER COUNTY CYO

In September 1952, the Catholic Youth Organization of the Diocese of Trenton was established in all eight Counties of the Diocese, under the supervision of the late Father Leonard R. Toomey, Diocesan CYO Director. Like its counterparts, the Mercer County CYO functioned in 26 parishes offering a four-fold program of spiritual, athletic, cultural, and social activities to boys and girls of both grammar school and high school age, as well as to young adults out of school and working. The latter group was known as CYAC’s – Catholic Young Adult Club. With 3,000 youth in these three divisions participating weekly in the CYO program, the Mercer County CYO was one of the largest youth service agencies in the area. On February 3, 1958, the Mercer County CYO opened its first official headquarters at 1 Centre Street, Trenton adjacent to Sacred Heart Church. The building was well known City-wide as the home of the former Men’s Catholic Club and its gymnasium, game activity, and meeting rooms became alive again. The CYO Day Camp began on July 7, 1958, on a 20-acre tract site of the old Springdale Park, on Allentown Rd. in Yardville, next to St Vincent DePaul Church; it featured an Olympic size swimming pool, sports, arts and crafts, and acres of woods. The Day camp was an immediate success, with a daily attendance of 300 grammar school age girls and boys in that first Summer of ’58 and a daily attendance of 500 in the Summer of ’59. The Day Camp still flourishes to this day. With an ever-increasing number of young people participating, the facility at Centre Street became inadequate. On June 13, 1964, the late Bishop George W. Ahr blessed and opened the present CYO Center at 920 South Broad Street. After all these years, it is still home to thousands of youth and adults who participate in the variety of programs and activities sponsored by the Mercer County CYO. Today it’s hard to imagine that the building was originally the RKO Broad Theater. After extensive renovations, the auditorium and stage were transformed into a gymnasium featuring a regulation size basketball court and bleachers. The balcony became game and meeting rooms, and the backstage changed into exercise and locker rooms. Second floor backstage dressing rooms reappeared as the arts and crafts area. No account of the CYO of Mercer County would be complete without acknowledging the assistance and interest of the Diocese of Trenton and the dedication and work of the late Monsignor Michael P. McCorristin. Monsignor, with a group of volunteers, undertook the renovations at 1 Centre Street and 920 South Broad Street, as well as building the swimming pool and facilities at the Day Camp. Likewise, the CYO will always be grateful to the legions of men and women, priests and religious educators who in the past as well as in the present, s generously volunteer their time and talents serving the youth of CYO in its long history, here in Mercer County and throughout the Diocese of Trenton. Written by Monsignor Leonard R. Toomey – August 1996

JOHN "MINCEY" MANCZAK

MR. "CYO" BASKETBALL 1916 - 1996

John "Mincey" Manzak

In loving memory of John "Mincey" Manczak, a long time CYO referee and coach. He was a

great ball player and he really enjoyed his golf games. Mincey was very dedicated in all he did. It was a great honor to have the CYO named the "John Mincey Manczak Gymnasium" which was

like his second home.

According to his beloved late wife Kay, he was a loving husband and a wonderful father. John "Mincey"

Manczak is greatly missed by family and friends and especially his daughter Michelle "Mincey" Jr.

Vince Peroni coached St. Raphael’s basketball from 1982-2009 winning eight regular season championships, seven playoff championships, had four undefeated seasons, and an appearance in the 2008 Diocesan Championship game! Peroni has put in countless hours serving the children of the St. Raphael’s and the CYO.During his time as Athletic Director Vince instituted a no cut policy to make sure every child had an opportunity to play. Peroni started the Freshman Basketball League in 1994 to give 3-4 graders an opportunity to play before the Junior Varsity Division began, and he was a member of the Diocesan Athletic Council from 2003-2009, during a time when the Diocesan Tournament of Champions was re-established.Peroni graduated from Allentown College of St. Francis DeSales with a B.A. degree. CHARLES J. PIHOKKENIMMACULATE

Charles is being inducted into the CYO Basketball Hall of Fame as a Special Contributor for his efforts at Immaculate Conception where he served as the Parish Athletic Director from 1963-1998! For 35 years he volunteered countless hours for the parish and children that participated in the Athletic Program, including basketball, softball, and cheerleading. Pihokken made sure that the kids came first and was constantly fundraising fun them. He made sure that the uniforms were replaced for his teams every five years, and IC was one of the only teams to have home and away uniforms. Charles made Immaculate Conception one of the best programs around, and the CYO stronger, and more storied for it!Pihokken was all about the kids and this is evidenced by the Pee Wee Basketball Program that he started in 1963 at the Immaculate Parish Center. This league was for 3-8 graders that did not make the CYO Varsity team. Over time the league grew and added a Cheerleading component, and girl’s basketball division called the Pinney League, and then outgrew the Parish Center and moved operations to the Trenton Catholic Gym, and renaming it the Minor League. Charles never turned away a child for not being able to pay the registration fee, he just worked harder to fundraise and find a way to make it work.Charles passed away in November 2009. He was married to his wife Anne for 59 years. They had three children, Charles, Thomas, and Beth (all of which were volunteer coaches at Immaculate), six grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Some of Pihokken’s greatest memories were watching his children and grandchildren play CYO Basketball and Cheer.

Truly a remarkable run, and without doubt a reason that CYO basketball has had such a successful run.Radice led his team to a 17-0 season in 1978 winning the regular season and playoff championship and was named CYO Coach of the Year. He also won the very competitive and talented Lower Bucks County Tournament in 1978. Vince also coached football at St. Anthony’s High School from 1969-1978 and freshman basketball at was then McCorristin High under John Castaldo. BILL RYANSPECIAL CONTRIBUTER

Bill Ryan was a ubiquitous presence on the Trenton sports scene in the years immediately following World War II. Fast talking, energetic, enthusiastic, imaginative. He was all of these things, and he could organize. He was a combination promoter and PR man, and one of the things he did was help get the great Trenton Parochial Basketball League, the forerunner of the CYO of today, off the ground. The Parochial League was the feeder for Father Clarence O’Shea’s great Trenton Catholic teams of the 50s.The Parochial League immediately became a Trenton sports staple. Both the Trentonian and Trenton Times ran all the box scores from the Sunday games at Junior Two.Bill Ryan died prematurely at age 39 in 1957. Here is what the great Joe Logue wrote in the Trentonian: “Those of us who cover the sports beat were constantly aware of the former Cathedral High and Rider College graduate. If the idea appealed to him, there was no containing his enthusiasm. Days and nights blended into selfless hours as the energetic fellow rushed from place to place, pursuing the climax of another promotional dream. They were always big-they were always good.”And we are here today because of just such a good idea.

DIANNE TRAILST. RAPHAEL’S

DiAnne Trail began coaching as an assistant with John Bartlomei at St. Raphael’s Parish during the 1979-80 basketball season. That year the undefeated team won the Division and League Championship. When John retired, DiAnne continued to coach there for nine more years. Then, DiAnne took some time off from coaching to raise her sons: Christopher, Ryan and Robert. Eventually, she missed coaching basketball so much that in 2009 she came back to coach at St. Gregory’s for four years. She was successful there as well with an undefeated season and league championship in 2010-11. In addition, to her basketball career DiAnne was athletic director at both St. Raphael’s and St. Gregory’s parishes. Softball was another area in which DiAnne excelled. Many championships were won by her softball teams as well. Finally, DiAnne enjoyed coaching volleyball until it no longer was offered at the CYO. Throughout the years, many well-known high school and college players were on her rosters. These players went on to have stellar sports careers. Some of them even coach today. She is most proud of the fact that many of her former players have given back to the community. For example, Debbie Zsenak Hart coached at St. Gregory the Great Academy and Linda Cyborski Weise currently coaches at Allentown High School. DiAnne never focused much on the records of her teams; but rather on how her players performed. She always stressed following the game plan and participating as a team player. Whether champions or not, DiAnne saw the potential in each and every player that she nurtured. DiAnne believes that the players she mentored have brought many blessings to her life. These children were fortunate to have DiAnne share her love of sports with them. Mrs. Trail is a graduate of Bethany College in West Virginia. She was a teacher at St. Raphael School, Program Director at St. Gregory the Great Parish, and presently a teacher at St. Gregory the Great Academy. She lives in Hamilton with her husband David and her sons.

Bork was named the league’s most valuable player and SGG won the CYO Championship for the first time in over 10 years! Cory’s outstanding play on the court and ability to lead the Lions to the Championship earned him Mr. CYO Basketball 2014-2015. As a freshman at Notre Dame High School Cory starred on the Junior Varsity team that finished 21-2. Cory has a bright athletic future ahead of him!

MR. CYO BASKETBALL 2014 - 2015JULIAN DIAMOND

TRENTON CATHOLIC ACADEMY

Since the age of four when Julian first started playing organized basketball he has grown a deep passion for the game. Basketball has always come natural to him and the court is his favorite place to be when stressed, sad, or mad, he calls the basketball court his holy place, or safe haven.A graduate of Trenton Catholic Academy, the 2015-2016 school year and basketball season was quite an accomplishment for Julian. Diamond led Trenton Catholic to the regular season Championship, and it was the first time that he had ever won a Championship in any sport. Along the way he earned several academic honors, including straight A’s on his report cards, placing among the top 5 on standardized testing for his school, being awarded a $5,000 scholarship to attend Trenton Catholic Academy, participating in AAU basketball for the first time, and receiving the honor of 2015-2016 Mr. CYO Basketball.Julian has worked hard for his accomplishments, putting in long hours to have success in basketball and school, he would often times leave his home at 7AM and not get home until near 10PM to attend classes, practice and games, after school study hall, training and weight room, and then more time with home work and studying. It all paid off, resulting in being named Mr. CYO Basketball!
