Grant us, Lord our God, that we may honour you with all our mind, and love everyone in truth of heart. Through our
Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First Reading: Deuteronomy 18:15-20
Moses spoke to the people; he said: "The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own
people; you shall heed such a prophet. This is what you requested of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the
assembly when you said: 'If I hear the voice of the Lord my God any more, or ever again see this great fire, I will die.'
"Then the Lord replied to me: 'They are right in what they have said. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from
among their own people; I will put my words in the mouth of the prophet, who shall speak to them everything that I com-
mand. "'Anyone who does not heed the words that the prophet shall speak in my name, I myself will hold accountable.
But any prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, or who presumes to speak in my name a word that I have not

I want you to be free from anxieties. The unmarried man is anxious about the affairs of the Lord, how to please the
Lord; but the married man is anxious about the affairs of the world, how to please his wife, and his interests are divided.
The unmarried woman and the virgin are concerned about the affairs of the Lord, so that they may be holy in body and
spirit; but the married woman is concerned about the affairs of the world, how to please her husband. I say this for your
own benefit, not to put any, restraint upon you, but to promote good order and unhindered devotion to the Lord. The

Gospel: Mark 1:21-28
The disciples went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, Jesus entered the synagogue and taught. They were
astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Just then there was in
their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?
Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God." But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent,
and come out of him!" And the unclean spirit, convulsing the man and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. They
were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another, "What is this? A new teaching—with authority! He commands
even the unclean spirits, and they obey him." At once Jesus' fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region

Comings and Goings
Last Tuesday we presented Harry our neighbour across the way, with a drawing of the streetscape around St
Canice’s and his former workshop. The original, by artist Michael Kelly is in this presbytery. Over a cup of
coffee we thanked Harry for his great help to the parish and the Jesuit community over many years. We
wished him a long and active retirement.
Today we welcome amongst us Fr Joachim da Silva Sarmento SJ, the new Superior of the Jesuits in East
Timor who has been in Sydney for Jesuit meetings and asked to come and thank the St Canice community
for their very generous support of Jesuit Mission over many years in Timor, especially in Railaco, our sister
parish. Fr Joachim is accompanied by Fr Mark Raper SJ, known to us all as a regular visitor here in the
Cross.
Today we also welcome to St Canice Fr Gaetan
Pereira SJ who has joined us from the Jesuit community in
Brisbane. Fr Gaetan has much experience in school and parish-
es throughout Australia and is keen to get to know you asap.

Parish Notices
Thank you Greg McCreanor: You may have noticed that our regular cantor Greg McCreanor
has not been at the 10.30am Mass. The reason for this is that at the end of November Greg advised
us that he would no longer be able to sing for us at St Canice’s. Unfortunately (for St Canice’s)
Greg’s full time employment has required him to spend a lot more time in Singapore and this came
about at very short notice to Greg. Greg has also recently moved to Leura in the Blue Mountains and
understandably wanted to spend as much time with his family as possible given the demands of trav-
el with his work.
Greg has been a wonderful support to us at St Canice’s and we will really miss his beautiful voice,
generosity of time and friendly smile. We wish him the best of luck in the future and hope to see him from time to time.
We have been very fortunate however that we have three new cantors that have joined us at St Canice’s -
Lauren Licuanan, Robyn Somers-Day and Chris Anson (who will commence in February). They will be singing on the 2nd, 3rd
and 4th Sunday of the month respectively. Catherine de Luca continues to share her beautiful singing with us on the 1st Sun-
day of the month. We extend a warm welcome to Lauren, Robyn and Chris and also thank Catherine and Claudine for their
continued support and generosity of time at St Canice’s over the past years.
Lenten Discussion Groups: To prepare for Easter this year we are running a Lenten Discussion group on Tuesday
evenings from 7pm - 8.30pm during Lent. The group will be held in the church and commence on Tuesday 20th February and
the meetings will continue until Tuesday 20th March. For further information please contact Lynelle or Bronwyn Clulow at the
parish office.
Parish Retreat: In the third week of the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius, the pilgrim who walks the Exercises will enter a
room that is filled with his own history. ‘How can I,’ we ask, ‘accompany You, You who has always accompanied me?” No mat-
ter the preparation of the prior weeks (life), we stand on a threshold, not really ready, but the door opens and we walk in …as
we do each Lent.
This is the week of Christ’s passion and death. Lent comes on the heels of Advent, quickly it seems. We know the story of
Easter, it does not change, it is we who are changed by it.
In this vulnerability, in the humility of not being able effect change we can feel as though we are falling, away what we know,
away from the superficial part of ourselves and into a love that is like no other, a love that joins us all.
Come away, rest a while, reflect in the silence. Let your heart listen.
Often all that we need is to quiet and focus our heart, and to know that we too are walked with.
The retreat will start at 9.30am on Saturday 10th March, and finish at 2pm on Sunday 11th March.

Celebrating St Canice Parish Volunteers On Thursday 22nd February at 6.30pm we are holding a special Mass to celebrate the important contribution that
volunteers make to parish life at St Canice’s. If you volunteer in parish ministry, parish administration or in some
other way, we would love you to join us.
Afterwards we invite you to the parish hall to enjoy paella served by Sofrito Paella, wine from Sevenhill and
