Dear Friends,

It was in Vacation Bible School the summer before my second grade year that I first began to understand racism. A

little black boy showed up on the first day, and there was a lot of whispering in the corner by the adults, “What do we

do with him?” “Doesn’t he have a black church to go to?” “Red and yellow, black and white they are precious in His

sight…” I was eavesdropping, and knew I wasn’t supposed to, but for some reason I got mad and grabbed this kid by

the hand and stomped my little feet and cried, “He belongs here just as much as me.” I couldn’t wrap my mind around

the fact that there was even a discussion about whether he should be with us in church.

I grew up in West Greenville at a time in which many white families fled to the Eastside where I am now the pastor.

My parents stayed. They later explained to me, “Why would we leave our homes just because the new neighbors had

a different skin color?” Almost everyone else around me was black, it just was how it was! But until I was 7, it never

occurred to me why I went to a church which was all white, when (it seemed to me at the time) everyone else in my

world was black. Now, of course, the church in the mill village where I grew up is a welcoming spiritual home for peo-

ple of all colors, to such an extent I’m sure no one even remembers what it was like when one little black boy came in

and changed it just by his skin color. I was so disturbed by this, I started making little sketches of the church I wanted

to build when I grew up. I called it “The Church of the Peoples” and in it, every race and culture and language would

be welcome. It was one of the many things that drew me to Catholicism. Catholic means universal, and we are at

home anywhere in the world.

My parents taught me to be proud of being Southern, but it never occurred to them to instill a pride in being white. At

the same time, though, they also imparted to me an entire oral cultural history in which it was very clear that what

Flannery O’Connor called “the Christ-haunted South” had its demons, and those demons would haunt every one of us

in some shape or form. Another thing I learned from my unusual childhood was not to be color-blind. God positively

willed all the colors of skin, all races: it was part of the beautiful diversity of creation. To be color-blind was to be im-

poverished. The historical legacy of slavery, discrimination and race relations was, and is, a heavy one. But not the

people who are affected and marked by that story. He’s not heavy, he’s my brother.

The second time in my life I cried about racism was this week. One more story of disproportionate police brutality

against a person of color was brought into the homes that we had been cocooning in for months against an invisible

enemy, COVID-19. Many people of good will have come to the fore to remind us all that life is sacred, and when we

play with people’s lives, tragedy ensues. Now, different people are reminding us of this in different ways, emphasizing

one way or another of that truth. But there are also people who want to use a crisis to sow seeds of chaos and de-

struction, and our social cohesion is being frighteningly imperiled. Yet even that reveals that, beneath the surface, our

country is very sick. And only we can save it.

Religious Education Teachers Needed! Sharing your

faith with the next generation has never been so

easy. Maria Barontini, Pastoral Associate of Chil-

dren's Catechesis, provides ALL materials, training

and reference material for teaching RE on Sundays

between 8:50-9:50a. Become a lead teacher or co-

teacher. Or, simply serve as a substitute for those

times when the teacher needs a week away. Contact

Maria ([email protected]) if

you have questions or would like to volunteer.

Happenings & Needs

During the month of June, we’re giving everyone an

opportunity to get caught up on confession: Tues-

day, Wednesday and Thursday 5-6p and Saturday

3.30-4.30p. Please wait outside the Croghan Hall old

church space in Parish House while each penitent

goes in.

We encourage you to observe the following:

1. Confess only mortal sins since your last confes-

sion. Devotional or general confessions of past or

venial sins can wait.

2. Wear a mask for your protection and Father's and

bring disinfecting wipes to quickly wipe down door

handles and the kneeler or chair before you use it.

3. Get to the point: sins, not stories. This is not the

time to seek spiritual direction. Number and kind of

mortal sins, any aggravating circumstances.

4. Confessors will be very firm with the scrupulous.

5. Be considerate of others who are waiting for con-

fession.

6. June is about trying to offer confession to every-

one who needs it or who has received General Ab-

solution since this began.

Note: General Absolution will be granted at Sunday Mass

until Corpus Christi Sunday

Prince of Peace Catholic Church is seeking help with

cleaning/disinfecting surfaces following the anticipat-

ed 5p, and 8a, 10a, 12n & 6p Sunday Mass. All clean-

ing products will be provided along with instructions.

This schedule will be made weekly! Can you help 13-

14 June? Volunteer here.

All plans subject to change! Check here often.

The Diocese has permitted perpetual Adoration

Chapels to re-open as of Corpus Christi Thursday

(11 June 2020)! Our weekly Eucharistic Holy Hour

ends on 10 June.

For the safety of our adorers, we’re limiting the vol-

ume of adorers at one time to a maximum of 4 peo-

ple. Disinfectant spray will be in the back of the

chapel for each adorer to spray down what has been

touched. And, adorers are encouraged to consider

wearing a mask.

Lisa Buss and the Guild’s team of division leaders

have secured adorers for 151 of the 168 hours in a

week. However, a few of our adorers, for health rea-

sons, are unable to return for a few more weeks.

Until all hours are covered, the Eucharist will not be

exposed in the Chapel.

To resume perpetual Eucharistic Adoration, the fol-

lowing hours need coverage for 6-8 weeks. To share

an hour with the Lord, contact Lisa Buss at

Letter from our Pastor (continued)

I have been worried about so many of my black friends and their allies who are angry and determined that

racism must stop. I have been worried about so many of my friends in police and law enforcement who are

putting their lives on the line to bring order out of chaos, treading a thin line between allowing legitimate

protest and quelling anarchy. I came across the word, whitesplaining, this week. I watched in confusion as

people began to throw Martin Luther King Jr quotes around as people who were very close to him had a

very different read of the situation. Social media has been awash with blacked out Facebook covers and In-

stagram posts, people defriending each other and anger rising from every corner of the globe. All of this has

been a powerful reminder to me that we have forgotten as a society to listen. We are so bent on making

our opinions known, and thinking of our response while someone else is sharing theirs that we fail to actually

listen. At the same time, we have seen how silence can be just as deafening, just as hurtful, just as destruc-

tive. It’s hard to know, how do I actively listen and then speak from the right place, all in a society which is

decidedly pluralist, and whose fabric seems to be fraying.

When people are hurting, we need to stop talking and start listening. We don’t have to condone violence,

rioting or looting. And we also can’t say, “I’m just going to pray about this” and use our prayerful silence as a

cloak for looking away from real injustice, wherever it may be found. Every year, millions march on Wash-

ington peacefully to protest crimes against the sanctity of human life. And every day, pro-life leaders listen to

women whose hearts are breaking and given them hope in the power of life and the might of love. My ear-

nest hope is that we can rise to the greatness of what America can and should be, and show that forgiveness

and reconciliation can heal the past and chart a different course for our future. But we have to listen. And

we must kneel before the God who is the ultimate source of our renewal.

Mother Teresa said, “If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.... ”

Until we remember that fundamental truth of human existence as designed by our Creator, it will never get

better. We belong to each other: black lives and blue lives, presidents and prelates, people of faith and those

who have lost all hope. We belong to each other. Let’s get that right in our heads and hearts first, and eve-

rything else will begin to fall into place.

The Right to Life and Dignity of the Human Person

Innocent human life is destroyed by abortion, euthanasia, “fertility treatments” such as in-vitro fertilization, experimentation using stem cells from human embryos, and cloning to manufacture human body parts. Catholic teaching about the sanctity of human life also leads us to oppose the death penalty, genocide, torture, unjust wars, and economic policies that ignore the needs of the poor and vulnerable.

Call to Family, Community, and Participation

The family, which emerges from marriage between a man and a woman, is the original and basic unit of society. Social and economic policies should work to strengthen the family rather than weaken it.

Rights and Responsibilities

Every human being has the right to life and to religious freedom. Everyone has a right to refuse to participate in actions contrary to one’s religious beliefs and to share and defend one’s creed and moral principles in the public forum. Everyone has the right and duty to participate fully in all aspects of life: political, social, cultural, and economic.

Option for the Poor and Vulnerable

We must have special concern and charity toward the unborn, persons with disabilities, the dying, refugees, long-term unemployed, prisoners, and all who are marginalized in our nation and beyond. Today, the situation of immigrant workers is especially urgent.

Dignity of Work and Rights of Workers

Economic justice includes the opportunity for dignified work at wages sufficient to support a family, workplace safety, and the right to take time for religious observances. Workers also have the duty to provide a fair day’s work for a fair day’s pay.

Solidarity

Loving our neighbor has global dimensions and requires us to eradicate racism and address the extreme poverty and disease plaguing so much of the world. We are called to welcome the stranger among us, including immigrants seeking work, a safe home, education for their chil-dren, and a decent life for their families. We are called to promote peace and pursue justice.

Caring for God’s Creation

As stewards, not owners, of the earth, people have an obligation to cherish and care for the environment. The earth yields forth many resources needed for human flourishing, especially energy and the capacity to produce food. These precious resources must be used prudently, fairly, safely, and with a constant concern for future generations.

Not liberal.Not conservative.

Simply Catholic.

Catholic citizenship & your voteWe have a dual heritage as both faithful Cath-olics and American citizens. As Catholics, our baptismal commitment to bear public witness to the values of Jesus Christ requires our active par-ticipation in the democratic life of our nation. As Americans, we have a serious moral obligation to vote. This brief insert is intended as a starting point to help us respond to our choices in the current political landscape.

There are many issues before us ...

• Issues that directly affect human lives, such as abortion and eutha-nasia, are fundamental and demand serious consideration.

• Our Constitution heralds religious liberty in the First Amendment, yet increasingly people of faith are having to fight to retain this basic right.

• Our nation has redefined marriage. The marriage of a man and a woman is the foundation of the family and an essential core element of a flourishing society.

• The growing disparity between rich and poor means most of the world’s resources are in the hands of a small percentage of its people. The federal budget is a moral document and we prioritize the poor-est and most vulnerable among us.

• The millions of undocumented persons living in the United States deserve our compassion. Our immigration system is broken, and we need a humane solution to it.

• War, terror, and violence have caused thousands of lost lives. We must work for just solutions to conflict in the Holy Land, through-out the Middle East, and beyond.

As Catholic citizens, we should remember three things:1. Respect for the dignity of each person is the core of Catholic social

and moral teaching. This is our most basic principle.2. We focus on the common good, not our own personal interests.

We ask, how can we make the world a better place? Not, how can I improve my own personal situation?

3. We have a responsibility, a true obligation, to form our consciences and participate in the civic life of this nation.

... but every issue is not equal.

Here are ways to form our consciences and participate in civic life:

• Be true to the teachings of the Church. Read Scripture, the Cat-echism of the Catholic Church, teachings from the Holy See, and the statements of our bishops. Read “Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship” at faithfulcitizenship.org. We need to be sure that our reason-ing and judgments are well-grounded in our faith.

• Stay well-informed about issues through judicious and reasoned engagement with the immense world of information in the 21st century. Just as all issues are not equal, all sources are not equal. For example, an individual’s blog, while potentially very insightful, may not have the same fidelity to factual truth as our media sources that hold themselves to professional standards of journalistic ethics, imperfect though they are.

• Remain in contact with our repre-sentatives in local, state, and federal government. Our responsibility to form our consciences leads to an obligation to be active citizens.

• Engage in reasoned, compassionate, and loving dialogue with others, Catholics and non-Catholics alike, about the issues and choices that we are facing as a nation. Remember that we are all called first to witness the Gospel, and through that witness, to share our social teaching to highlight the moral dimensions of issues, and to participate in debate on public policy.
