of the East End of Pittsburgh
ST. CHARLES LWANGA AND ST. JAMES CAMPUSES
OCT. 28, 2018
As Pope Francis has reminded us, it is in living the Beatitudes that we find
the path to holiness. The Beatitudes are not a list of do's and don'ts. Rather,
they are a road map to finding our way to others and to the kingdom of God.
It is when we enter into the human condition with all of its pain and sorrow
that we discover again the creative presence of God guiding us to greater
wholeness. Being poor in spirit ? being meek and humble ? mourning our
sorrow and losses and walking with others through theirs ? hungering and
thirsting for righteousness ? being merciful ? maintaining a clean heart ?
pursuing peace ? daily taking up the challenge of the Gospel. All bring us into
the mystery of humanity and indeed into the mystery of God. The pathway to
our relationships and the blueprint detailing our responsibilities are revealed.
Are we ready to roll up our sleeves and get dirty?

Let Me See!
This weekend we celebrate the Thirtieth Sunday in
Ordinary Time. Our readings focus on having a life
altering experience that changes the direction of daily
life. In the First Reading from the Prophet Jeremiah,
we read how a prophet has good news for the people
in exile. God appointed Jeremiah as a prophet to steer
the kingdom back on the right path and bring them home.
In the Gospel of St. Mark; we read how a blind man named
Bartimaeus wants to see. He approaches Jesus and is immediately
healed.
Mark places today’s gospel story in a strategic place. Jesus
tried to open the disciple’s eyes to his coming death and resurrec-
tion. He had been telling his disciples that he would have to suf-
fer and die. They are “blind” to what he is trying to tell them.
Bartimaeus pushed through the opposition of the crowd that tried
to prevent him from approaching Jesus. When he receives his
sight, he immediately follows Jesus on the road - a biblical sym-
bol for the way of salvation. Let us open up our eyes and see
Christ in our midst. Let Me See!
On Mission For the Church Alive…
Our first full week of the Interim Mass Schedule went very
smoothly. We did notice an increase in Mass attendance for all of
the Masses. Thank you to those parishioners who stayed after the
4 pm Saturday night Mass and Sunday 10 am Mass for a “Meet
and Greet with Fr. Tom.” Many great comments and suggestions
were made. Special thanks to Lois Campbell for being the facili-
tator, and the volunteers who provided the delicious coffee and
doughnuts on Sunday!
I want to be open, honest and transparent, with clear communi-
cation from the pulpit, via the bulletin, and the website about our
journey as begin to bring the three parishes together. As the
Catholic Community of the East End of Pittsburgh, let us be open
for change and work together.
Thank You!
Thank to the seventeen volunteers who took the time out of
their busy schedules last Saturday to help begin with the St.
James Rectory Renovations. Members from St. Bede and St.
James removed old carpeting from the third floor and scraping
old paint from the rooms and patching the walls. We filled a
whole dumpster that was placed in front of the Rectory! Special
thanks to: Marin Alacete, Joanne Anderson, Michael Boyle,
Lois Campbell, Paul and Bobbi Cass, Ed Lahoda, Ray Mar-
tin, Dan Majewski, Mary Anne Mason, Mary Anne
McNerney, Kevin McNulty, Mark Peterson, Colleen Posey
Nelson, Jeff Sassic, Bob Sherry, and Nancy Tullar. Thank you
to Kevin McNulty for the donated dumpster and Mary Anne Ma-
son for providing breakfast, lunch, and drinks for the workers!
Kenny Guy Contracting will begin work on the third floor
renovations this week. We are accepting donations to help with
the renovation project. If you would like to make a donation
please contact me at 412.661.7222 ext. 207 or e-mail me at
[email protected]. Please make checks payable to St. James
Parish-Rectory Renovation Fund. I am looking forward to mov-
ing into the Rectory by Christmas and get settled in.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus calls for the blind
man, Bartimaeus, that he might come to him
and be healed. Saint Mark relates to us very
vividly that Bartimaeus, “threw aside his
cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus,” and that his sight was
restored because of his faith and trust in God. In the Church,
we most likely think of calling as one’s vocation, listening
for what purpose God has created us to know, love and serve
him. Priests speak of their vocation, or calling, to holy orders
and married couples talk of being called to love with a sacri-
ficial, unbreakable and unconditional love. Within our voca-
tion, the Lord time and again calls out to us to share our gifts
and abilities in a variety of ways. As our On Mission for The
Church Alive! journey continues we are all invited to listen
for the Lord calling us and seeking new ways to respond in
faith and generosity. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org.

EVERY LIFE Cherished, Chosen, Sent Our respect life focus for October 27-28 will be “Respecting
Immigrants”. Sr. Linda Yankowski from Holy Family Institute
has been invited to speak to us at our Masses that weekend.
Several immigrant children who were separated from their
families at the Mexico-US border have been placed at Holy
Family Institute. We will hear a first-hand report. Prayers and
letter writing next weekend will relate to respecting the lives
and rights of immigrants.
