In the Gospel, Jesus instructs us: You must be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect. How can this be? We are all sinners and fall far short of the glory of God. Yet, one of the books written by St. Teresa of Avila was entitled: “The Way of Perfection”. She understood the meaning of the term… and it is as follows. Jesus is the perfect person. He is the Perfection. He fulfills perfectly all that the heavenly Father has asked of Him. Properly understood, we walk in the way of Perfection when we keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and follow Him who is the Way, the Truth and the Life. Also the Mystical Body of Christ is the Church which cannot be separated from her Head, Christ. Therefore, the Church, full of flawed, faulty sinners is nonetheless a perfect organism, divinely imbued with the Holy Spirit. If each of us, sinners all, walk in lockstep with the Church in her liturgy, obeying the Commandments, adhering to the tenets of our creed, celebrating the Sacraments and praying, we walk the Way of Perfection. Further, one can be perfect as the heavenly Father is perfect when we realize that Jesus and the Father are One. The Father is perfect, Jesus is perfect and the Church of which we are members is perfect. And so, we have the Church, a portal of hope that we can indeed follow the path of perfection with clear conscience and integrity of heart. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

What is Mercy? Mercy is a virtue that influences a person’s compassion for another. Mercy inspires the will to ease another’s misfortunes or suffering in either body or soul. The corporal and spiritual works of mercy are charitable actions that extend God’s compassion and mercy to those in need. The works of mercy are more than gestures or obligations. To gain merit in heaven, the actions must be performed as acts of love for our neighbor as a response to our deep love for God. The corporal and spiritual works of mercy work together as paths to Salvation. They give Christians ways to live according to Jesus’ Great Commandment. And they are important to pay attention to now as we celebrate the Holy Year of Mercy, called for by Pope Francis. What works of mercy will your family choose to do this year?

Sunday classes? Yes! We DO have classes this weekend, but we will not have any on Sunday, February 7th nor on Sunday, February 14th.
