Our Mission As an assembly empowered by the glory of the Resurrection, we are committed to one another and to the tradition of the Catholic Church in celebrating the Seven Sacraments, the Sacred Liturgy, proclaiming the Good News through Education, sustaining the community of Faith, and promoting Charity, Peace and Justice for all people, now and forever.

Baptisms Parents must be registered in the parish and attend Mass regularly. Parents and godparents are required to attend a pre-Baptism class. The next class will be held on Sunday, August 18th, at 5:00 PM in Room 3 at Saint Patrick. Please RSVP to the Parish Office before attending the class.

Sacrament of Marriage A couple wishing to be married in Saint Patrick Church or Saint James Church must contact the parish six months prior to the intended wedding date.

FAITH AND HOPE

Faith and hope are closely united in today’s readings. The Israel-ites knew when the Passover was coming, and so were not in fear, but had faith and courage, “putting into effect with one accord the divine institution.” In this we can see a foretelling of the Eucharist that we celebrate according to Christ’s command, “Do this in memory of me.” We see that Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, and Jacob died in faith, although they did not see fulfillment of the promise. We live in hope that our faith will be fulfilled every time we celebrate this sacrament. We too are not to be afraid, but to have hope that our faith will be fulfilled in the coming of Christ.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

All,

As many of you may know I fell away from the Catholic church after high school. I went to several other churches but they didn’t seem to fit. At some point one of the parishioners at St. Patrick made a comment to me that started my journey back to Catholicism.

There are many times when we all don’t make the comment that we should make which might encourage someone in their faith. We hold back because we are afraid for whatever reason. I encourage you to make the comment that might bring someone back into the faith as it happened for me. Let the Holy Spirit lead you in this way and take that chance.

Sincerely,

Keith Flaherty, Grand Knight, Monsignor Hayes Council

MISSION SUPPORT FOR THE ARCHDIOCESE OF TORORO, UGANDA The Archdiocese of Tororo, covering an approximate area of 8,500 square miles, serves an estimated

population of 3.6 million people, about 1.2 million of whom are Catholic. These are some of our needs. 1) Parishes: caring for 45 parishes 984 missions or sub-parishes 2) Formation of pastoral ministers: Currently we have about 315 seminarians, about a quarter of whom will proceed on to the major seminary. We have about 40 seminarians studying in the philosophical and theological seminaries. We currently have 117 native diocesan priests and 9 religious priests. Once ordained, our priests need to continue their formation, especially by attending educational workshops and spiritual retreats. The 945 catechists serve the mission churches (sub-parishes). 3) Transportation of pastoral ministers: The priests and catechists need to travel to and from the mission churches, usually scooters and bicycles. 4) Education: In collabora-tion with the Government of Uganda, the Archdiocese runs several Primary, Secondary and Technical schools. Most of these schools, run by our 16 native religious brothers and 243 native religious sisters, are in rural settings where there is no electricity, no computers and not enough textbooks and laboratory equipment. The teaching and learning process becomes very difficult in such an environment. 5) Health: The Archdiocese has one hospital, three sub-hospitals and twelve small medical facilities through which we try to fulfill Christ’s ministry of physical healing. These facilities, usually run by the religious sisters are not funded by the Government and must depend on user fees to purchase drugs and equipment and cover the cost of personnel. 6) Economic development: The Archdiocese of Tororo, through its development arm CARITAS, empowers the laity with skills that can improve their economic base. 69% of the people are peas-ant farmers with small plots of land on which to cultivate their crops. Because of this, most of them live from hand to mouth, which has an adverse impact on their income. Through CARITAS-Tororo, the Archdio-cese runs programs, especially in the area of improved agricultural methods, so that families can sustain themselves better economically. 7) Women: Archdiocesan Women’s Desk focuses on the realities of women. When empowered, women can do a great deal to improve their families’ economic situation as well as the sanitary condition of their homes. 8) Water: Our Five-Year Strategic Plan includes a program to increase access to clean, safe water. Presently only 72% of our people have access to improved water sources; the rest have to rely on unprotected springs and wells. Next week we will take up the collection for this cause.
