THE TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

PHONE PRAYER TREE If you have an urgent prayer request, please call:

Ann Covey at 575-9497 Claudette Warren at 442-7965 or Elisa Victorino (Spanish) at 935-7156.

FEAR NOT How do people find hope in the face of suffering and death? That is the question addressed by today’s scriptures. We hear of the suffering of Jeremiah and the psalmist. We hear of the death that “reigned from Adam to Mo-ses” (Romans 5:14). We hear of the fears of the Twelve as Jesus sends them out into the world to preach and heal. Through all this tribulation one message rings out loud and clear—“Do not be afraid!” The God who saved Jeremiah and the psalmist and Jesus is fully pre-sent to save us through the gra-cious gift of Jesus Christ. We have nothing and no one to fear.

THE LORD IS THE STRENGTH OF HIS PEOPLE, A SAVING REFUGE FOR THE ONE HE HAS ANOINTED. SAVE YOUR PEOPLE, LORD, AND BLESS YOUR HERITAGE, AND GOVERN THEM FOR EVER. cf. PSALM 28

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS

The Eucharistic Prayers at the heart of our liturgy have a long history, beginning with the extemporaneous prayers of the early Christians. The presiders gave thanks from their hearts, not from any prearranged text, over the gifts of bread and wine. When the assembly had the sense that enough was said, someone would call out “Amen!” and that was that. For the most part, the plan flowed directly from Jewish meal prayers, which always recalled God’s mighty deeds. Some other markers and signposts were added almost everywhere fairly early, like the presider’s call to attention: “Lift up your hearts!” Scholars have provided us with translations of many early texts. These have actually helped us craft new liturgical prayers, because until the liturgical reforms of forty years ago, no one could recall any prayer but the Roman Canon, now called Eucharistic Prayer I. For hundreds of years in the West, it was our only Eucharistic Prayer, and it was only in Latin. But the history of our Eucharistic Prayers is amazingly fruitful, and models have come down to us that have yielded new insights and ex-pressions. The old custom of improvising texts according to a master plan has not endured, but we have now rediscovered a plan of stand-ardizing the text while allowing for a great variety.

GRANT, O LORD, that we may always revere and love your holy name, for you never deprive of your guidance those you set firm on the foundation of your love. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who live and reign with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

You have been saved by the grace of God in the person of Jesus Christ (2). Hence, do not fear those who can take away your mortal life (3), for the Lord will protect and defend you (1, Ps) unto life everlasting.

FIRST READING—JEREMIAH 20:10-13 The LORD has rescued the poor from the clutches of the wicked.

PSALM—69 Lord, in your great love, answer me.

SECOND READING—ROMANS 5:12-15 The grace of God overflows for all.

GOSPEL—MATTHEW 10:26-33 All who acknowledge Jesus before others

will likewise be acknowledged by Jesus before the Father.

COLLECTION FOR THE CHURCH IN LATIN AMERICA

Thank you for your generous support last week of the Collec-tion for the Church in Latin America. As a parish, we collect-ed $[amount], which will be used to share the faith with our brothers and sisters in Latin America and the Caribbean. If you missed the collection, it’s not too late to give! Just visit www.usccb.org/nationalcollections and click “How to Give” on the left. Your gift will certainly make a difference!

CHURCH OFFICE CLOSED The Church Office will be closed Monday, July 3, and Tues-day, July 4, in observance of Independence Day.

LIVING GOD’S WORD Sometimes the only way to deal with a fear is to fight through the fear. That has a way of dispelling its

power over us. So we find ourselves trying to live by the example of Jesus and trusting in his wisdom.

OUR NEW MUSIC DIRECTOR JANE HEINRICHS Jane has just completed her doctoral degree in piano performance at the University of Washington, where she has been a resident of Seattle for the last five years. A native of Fort Smith, Jane attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, and since then has lived in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Taiwan and Hong Kong before moving to Washing-ton State. She has played both organ and piano in many Seattle-area churches and in

many solo and choral performances at the University of Washington. She was formerly the music director of St. Lo-renzo Ruiz Catholic Church in Walnut, California, a suburb of Los Angeles, and was involved with choirs presenting clas-sical, contemporary, and multicultural repertoire. She was also active in the community hosting high school exchange students from China. She has been a faculty member of the Seattle Piano Academy.

Jane enjoys traveling—especially cross-country drives. Her daughter Samantha is twenty-two and a senior at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Daughter Lauren is twenty-three and teaches English in Taipei, Taiwan. Jane is excited to become a part of the St. Joseph Catholic Church commu-nity, and believes that worship through music is a vibrant ele-ment in our growing relationship with God.

REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD "Fear no one," this week's Gospel blithely reminds us (Matthew 10:26). Understood, but also easier said than done. "Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but can-not kill the soul" (10:28). Okay, but we tend to grow at-tached to our bodies and hope to keep them a while long-er. "[D]o not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows" (10:31). But also one sparrow in the hand is worth two in the bush. We tend to go with what we have. The fact is that most of us are not Jeremiah, who said what he believed even to the point of alienating just about everyone around him. To be Jeremiah can sometimes be just too intimidating. In short, we like our bodies as well as our souls, and so we let our fears get in the way of being the Christians we wish to be. Nevertheless, every once in a while the Jeremiah strain in each of us does show itself. We speak up for what is right, realizing that if we do not, perhaps no one else will either. And so we say what must be said, maybe not shout-ing it from the housetops but at least from the porch of the spirit in which our soul dwells. And after we've done so, miracle of miracles, we realize we are no longer afraid.
