Everyday Stewardship

It was many years ago, but I remember it as if it was yes-

terday. Before most good basketball players left college

early for the NBA draft, the Duke Blue Devils won back-to-

back championships in men's basketball. The morning

after the second championship, I drove to the campus

bookstore in order to be one of the first to purchase com-

memorative T-shirts: one for me and several more for my

parents and wife. A crowd was at the door of the store

when I arrived, long before it was open for business.

When I finally walked inside, I looked around and saw one

shirt in particular I liked. I walked over to it, and as I got

close to reaching out to pick it up, a little old lady literally

ran into me, spun me around, grabbed the shirt, and

shrieked, "It's mine!" As if there was only one shirt in the

entire store!

Neither of us were entitled to that shirt. In fact, we aren't

entitled to much in this life. Rather than searching to get

what we think we deserve or trying to beat out others for a

better position in this world, our God calls us to focus on

helping others to experience the many gifts available to

them in this life. We are called to serve instead of be

served. Our mission is to sacrifice ourselves and what we

desire on this earth for the Kingdom of God. If we are will-

ing to essentially assault someone to get to a T-shirt, what

will we do when the stakes are higher? After my initial

shock, I wasn't really angry with that lady at Duke. After

all, I would like to think that if she simply asked me for it I

would have given it to her. At least, I hope I would have.

La Corresponsabilidad Diaria

Fue hace muchos años, pero lo recuerdo como si fuera

ayer. Antes de que tantos jugadores de basquetbol se

fueran de la universidad para entrar a jugar profesional-

mente para el NBA, los Duke Blue Devils (una escuela uni-

versitaria del norte) ganaron dos campeonatos consecu-

tivos de básquet de hombres. Por la mañana del segundo

campeonato, decidí ir a la tiendita de la escuela para com-

prar unas camisetas conmemorativas de ese año: una para

mí y otras para mis padres y mi esposa. Ya había mucha

gente amontonada en la entrada de la tienda antes de que

abriera. Cuando finalmente pude entrar, encontré la que

más me gustaba. Cuando me acerqué a cogerla, una viejita

casi me aventaba, me dio una vuelta, cogió la camiseta y

grito: "¡Es mía!" ¡Como si fuera la única camiseta en la

tienda!

Ninguno de nosotros teníamos derecho a la camiseta. De

hecho, nosotros no tenemos derecho a mucho en esta vida.

En vez de buscar lo que creemos que nos merecemos o tra-

tar de ganarles a los demás para las cosas 'mejores,' nues-

tro Dios nos llama a enfocarnos en ayudar a los demás ex-

perimentar los regalos que les es disponible en esta vida.

Somos llamados a servir en vez de ser servidos. Nuestra

misión es sacrificarnos y sacrificar a eso que deseamos pa-

ra llegar al Reino de Dios. Si estamos dispuestos a casi ata-

car a otro por una camiseta, ¿qué haríamos en una situ-

ación más grave? Después de que se me quitó el shock ini-

cial, verdaderamente no estaba molesto con esa viejita de

la tienda. Quiero pensar que si me la hubiese pedido, yo se

la daba. Bueno, eso espero.

All Saints Day I heard a story the other day of a very holy man. The com-mentator said, "We shouldn't call him a saint. If we sancti-fy him, we don't have to imitate him." This is precisely the

opposite of the meaning of saints! Throughout the Church's history, we have honored saints, but not to set

them apart. We honor saints to remind us what is possible for a person who loves God. The saints have stories as varied as our own. We have bishops, martyrs, teachers, doctors, former thieves and prostitutes, politicians and

kings, soldiers and pacifists, single mothers, desert her-mits ? the list goes on! On this Solemnity of All Saints, we remember this garden of holiness, rich with diverse flower-ings of a holy life. When you look at the life of your favorite saint, ask yourself, "How can I imitate this person? What

is possible for me when I love God?"

Prayer for the Faithful Departed Good and faithful God,

you have given us so many people in our lives that have given us joy and solace.

On this day we ask you to remember our dearly departed, especially N.

Keep them close to you as we all wait for that day when we all will come

and worship in your presence. We ask this through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Todos los Santos

El otro día escuché una historia de un hombre muy santo. El

comentarista dijo: "No deberíamos llamarlo santo. Si lo santi-

ficamos, no tenemos que imitarlo". ¡Esto es precisamente lo

opuesto al significado de los santos! A lo largo de la historia

de la Iglesia, hemos honrado a los santos, pero no a diferen-

ciarlos. Honramos a los santos para recordarnos lo que es

posible para una persona que ama a Dios. Los santos tienen

historias tan variadas como la nuestra. ¿Tenemos obispos,

mártires, maestros, médicos, ex ladrones y prostitutas, políti-

cos y reyes, soldados y pacifistas, madres solteras, ermita-

ños del desierto? ¡la lista continua! En esta solemnidad de

todos los santos, recordamos este jardín de santidad, rico en

diversas floraciones de una vida santa. Cuando mire la vida

de su santo favorito, pregúntese: "¿Cómo puedo imitar a

esta persona? ¿Qué me es posible cuando amo a Dios?"

Mensaje del Pastor

Hoy es el último fin se semana de Octubre. Felicitaciones a las familias que tomaron en serio rezar el santo rosario du-rante todo el mes. Les invito a mantener viva la costumbre, no solo por tradición, sino también porque el santo rosario trae consigo grandes promesas de la Virgen María. Si reza-mos el rosario en familia, el amor de María nos asegura que la paz del hogar no se perderá. En los próximos días nos encontraremos con la fiesta de Todos los Santos y el Día de los Difuntos. Ambas fiestas son de gran arraigo en nuestra fe católica. Nosotros, quie-nes nos reunimos para celebrar la Eucaristía, somos la iglesia peregrina. Todos los Santos que celebraremos el día 1 Noviembre, son la iglesia triunfante. Y las almas que están en purificación de sus pecados, son la iglesia pur-gante. Somos una sola Iglesia, en camino hacia la patria eterna para celebrar con Cristo, las bodas del Cordero (Apocalipsis 5). Aunque sintamos la fuerza negativa del pecado, nunca debemos darnos por vencidos, porque la misericordia de Dios es eterna y gratis para todos. Digo esto porque muchas veces descubro personas que han perdido la ilusión por la vida eterna. Viven rezagados en los pecados y en una tibieza espiritual, como cruzados de bra-zos. Celebrar a Todos los Santos y orar por nuestros seres queridos, debe motivarnos para enfocarnos más, en hacer las cosas mejor. La fe sin obras, es como estar muerto en vida. Por el bautismo estamos llamados ser hombres y mu-jeres santos. Debemos seguir marchando con fe en la ca-rrera por aumentar puntos positivos en nuestra vida y ven-cer los desánimos. Saludos y bendiciones les enviamos los peregrinos, desde Jerusalén. Dios los bendiga. Amen.

_________________________________________ Superando la Envidia y los Celos Pasos para Superar la Envidia y los Celos 1 Gratitud por los regalos que recibimos, independiente-mente de las comparaciones con lo que otras personas tienen. 2 Humildad para comprender que no siempre necesita-mos ocupar el estatus más alto en la sociedad y ser re-compensados más que, o incluso tanto, como los de-más. Reconocer los talentos de los demás y su dignidad para ser recompensados es un signo de santidad. 3 Cristo dijo: "Lo último será lo primero y lo primero lo último", y es este espíritu de vida sacrificial lo que nos ayudará a acercarnos más a Dios. En lugar de consu-mirnos midiendo lo que tenemos, deberíamos tratar de acercarnos más a Dios abandonando nuestras propias preocupaciones en favor del bien de los demás. 4 El perdón es un antídoto poderoso contra los efectos insidiosos de la envidia y los celos porque nos ayuda a superar los desaires, la injusticia y la crueldad que pue-den llevar a un espíritu de rivalidad. 5 Confíe en la providencia de Dios y sepa que las cir-cunstancias correctas y las recompensas nos esperan cuando saludamos al mundo con corazones amorosos.

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today is the last weekend of October. Congratulations to the families who took the Holy Rosary seriously dur-ing the month. I invite you to keep the custom alive, not only by tradition, but also because the Holy Rosary brings great promises of the Virgin Mary. If we pray the rosary as a family, Mary's love assures us that the peace of the home will not be lost. In the next few days we will find the Feast of All Saints and All Souls. Both sides are deeply rooted in our Cath-olic faith. We, who gather to celebrate the Eucharist, are the pilgrim church. All the Saints that we will celebrate on November 1, are the triumphant church. And the souls that are in the purification of their sins, are the pur-gative church. We are a Church, on the road to the eter-nal homeland to celebrate with Christ, the marriage of the Lamb (Revelation 5). Although we feel the negative force of sin, we must never give up, because God's mer-cy is eternal and free to all. I say this because many times I discover people who have lost the hope of eter-nal life. They live behind in the sins and in a spiritual te-pidity, like crossed arms. Celebrate all the saints and pray for our loved ones, this should motivate us to focus more, to improve things. Faith without works is like being dead in life. Through baptism we are called to be holy men and women. We must continue marching with faith, in the race to increase the positive points in our lives and overcome discouragement. Barrera ___________________________________________ Overcoming Envy and Jealousy Steps to Overcome Envy and Jealousy 1 Gratitude for the gifts bestowed upon us, independent of comparisons to what other people have. 2 Humility to understand that we do not always need to occupy the highest status in society and be rewarded more than, or even as much, as others. Recognizing the talents of others and their worthiness to be rewarded is a sign of holiness. 3 Christ said, “The last will be first, and the first last,” and it is this spirit of sacrificial living that will help us draw closer to God. Rather than being consumed with measuring what we have, we should aim to draw closer to God by abandoning our own cares in favor of the good of others. 4 Forgiveness is a powerful antidote to the insidious ef-fects of envy and jealousy because it helps us get be-yond the slights, unfairness and cruelty that can lead to a spirit of rivalry. 5 Trust in the providence of God and know that the right circumstances and rewards await us when we greet the world with loving hearts.
