Reverends Scott and Melissa Maxwell-Doherty

The Reverends Scott and Melissa Maxwell-Doherty serve as University Pastors at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks. Scott and Melissa will be sharing their 13 years’ experience serving as Campus Pastors at CLU which means they have keen insights into the col-legiate community in our area. During this time the college culture has changed in many ways. The concerns and questions asked by undergrad-uate students provide a key indicator into what might be their community life following com-mencement. Through it all they see evidence of the swirling Spirit of a gracious God who tends, stirs, shapes, calls, and forms us all. This will be of interest to those with children going to college. Come and join us for an entertaining and in-formative evening of fun, socializing, presenta-tions and talk, plus excellent food, with your fel-low parishioners. Summer Safety Tips: Questions You Need to Ask Your Child.

Summer brings a whole range of issues that affect your ability to protect your children from sexual abuse. The core best practice rule for child safety is to have as much information as possible and replace blind trust with knowledge and healthy suspicion. That means asking questions: Where are you going? What will you do while you are there?, Who will be with you?, When will you return?, Which adults will be present? Then evaluate the situation and deter-mine if it is safe for your child to participate. And, don’t be afraid to say “No” when it is not! For more information about “Summer Safety Tips” please contact the Office of Safeguard the Children email: [email protected]

Going to a Wedding

The bishops of Nicaea were given the task to show that the Father, Son and Spirit were all part of the Trinity; three persons in one God. The bishops were forced to break through the limits their Greek language and Greek concepts imposed on them. The author of John’s Gospel had at least sixty years to reflect on the implication of Jesus’ dying and rising. He knew how the church had evolved over those years. That is why his Jesus makes an amazing promise during his Last Supper farewell address, “I have much more to tell you, but you cannot hear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears and will declare to you the things that are com-ing.” John is convinced that revelation is not just a one time event. The risen Jesus, through the Spirit, constantly leads us to new insights, new ways of seeing and understanding God in our everyday lives. Applied to today’s feast, the evangelist is telling us that one definition of God does not fit all. Since we believe our God is the holiest entity we’ll ever encounter, we will always be encounter-ing God in different ways. — from National Catholic Reporter -Fr. R. V. Karban

Weddings are often occasions when people of different traditions or even different faiths gather. Actively par-ticipating in wedding ceremonies of other traditions or faiths—singing, saying the prayers, making the ges-tures—may not be easy if we are unfamiliar with them. Have you noticed that even at a wedding Mass where most of the people are Catholic, the singing is poor, the responses to the presider or lector lack enthusiasm and people are slow to stand, sit or walk in procession at the appropriate times? Why is this? Even with the addi-tion of the marriage vows and exchange of rings after the homily, the shape of the wedding Mass is that of Sunday Eucharist, a sacred celebration that we are very accustomed to doing. Even when a wedding is celebrat-ed according to the rite of marriage “outside of Mass,” it still has the familiar structure of the liturgy of the word, the first part of Mass. Why then, at a wedding, do we often act as if it’s the first time we’ve ever been to church? Whatever the causes, the unfortunate result is that we often miss a unique opportunity to do what we are called to do always and everywhere: give thanks and praise to God as the body of Christ. We miss an oppor-tunity to bless the new husband and wife by thanking God with and for them, praising God for their love for each other, which is a sure sign of the love God has for us. So if you’ll be attending a wedding soon, promise your-self that you won’t miss the opportunity to praise and thank God. Stand and sit promptly so that the presider doesn’t say, “Please stand now for the gospel,” or “Be seated.” Don’t distract others, or yourself, by fiddling with cameras. Take pictures after Mass or at the recep-tion. Make your responses enthusiastic. Most importantly, sing out. Sing as though the future health and happiness of the new couple depended on it. It does. More supportive than the toaster or towels that you give as a gift, a good liturgy is the best beginning for a Christian marriage. Also the beginning of good liturgy is our full, conscious and active participation in it. Lift up your hearts!
