STRENGTHENED BY THE BREAD OF LIFE. Today we resume the “Bread of Life” discourse from John’s Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes reference to the Jews’ ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on

his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life—a marvelous promise, but this “reward” is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the fullness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth in service to all.

S piritual Book Club will meet August 27 at 12:30 pm at the Coffee Shelf and will

discuss Life Without Limits by Nick Vujicic. All are welcome! For further information please contact Linda Spencer 803.732.3201 or [email protected].

The Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time PLEASE HELP WITH OUR PRAYER LISTS!

Many thanks to all who helped update our Prayer List in the Bulletin and for the Altar. If you ask that a name be placed on the list, please keep us

informed so that we may keep our lists updated. We will be asking your help quarterly to keep these lists in order. Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man has great power in its effects. ~ James 5:16

A new Bereavement Class Begins on September 27th

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.” Matthew 5:4

If you have experienced a life-changing loss, we welcome you to the Bereavement Class in St. Ignatius Hall each Thursday morning at 10:00 am, beginning September 27, 2018. The class will attempt to work through at least

some of the trials resulting from the death of a loved one. The focus will not only explore the practical, but also emphasize the spiritual assets of our Catholic faith. Even if you have attended this class before, or others in the past, we would greatly appreciate your insights and strengths that will be of comfort to others of our faith family.

Lighthouse Catholic Ministry Christ’s Intentions

Christ died to save us from our sins. But for what purpose did he live? This CD explores the efforts Jesus made to establish his church and ensure that it would endure through the centuries. Renowned Scripture scholar and author, Dr. Tim Gray, provides a fascinating explanation of the importance of the visible

Church and the centrality of God on Earth. He offers incredible insights that make clear the role of the Church as an essential part of God’s plan for salvation, which are sure to help those who have left her, or who mistakenly claim to be “spiritual, but not religious.”

(CDs & Books can be found in the Vollkommer Bell Tower and the lobby in the Parish Offices Complex).
