Our staff worked with so many volunteers and together they happily provided an event that will be hard to match in the future! There are so many to thank for the beauti-ful liturgy, but a special mention for the dancers led by Ric Decatoria and Catherine Murphy for the music. Thank you to all the cooks, tirelessly led by Bella Bautista, the youth who set up at 8am, the servers and clean up crew, especially David Fikstad. And finally, Naty Moreno who organized the carnival and Eva Ramos who arranged for the horse and pony!

By Fr. Eugene Hensell, OSBJohn 3:16 is one of the most fa-mous passages in the entire New Testament. Reference to it is dis-played on signs at sporting events, painted on the sides of barns, and even displayed boldly on the arms of men and women in the form of tattoos. Few, however, have any real sense of the depth of its meaning. Without exaggeration this verse is an amazingly compact summary of the entire theology of John's gospel. But it takes a very perceptive reader to get to that depth of meaning. The first thing that we are told is that God loved the world in a very unique manner. He gave the world his Son. This is not about "how much" God loved the world, but about the "unique manner" in which God loved the world. Even though the world has dem-onstrated much hostility against God, still God created the world and continues to love it in spite of its rebellious nature. God does not punish the world for this, but sends his Son who will take onto himself the sins of the world. God's Son can accomplish this saving task because he is totally unique ("his only Son"). This uniqueness is found in the relationship the Son has with the Father. What the Father does, the Son can do. Getting access to this eternal life offered by the Father through the Son one must choose to believe in Jesus.John 3:16 is partially restated in verses 17-18. This entire passage and its surrounding context was very significant in the early church's development of Trinitarian theol-ogy. While it is not fully developed here, all the ingredients are pres-ent. It is only a small step from this gospel to the church's teaching on the Trinity. © 2005, OCP. All rights reserved.

The Light of the Trinity

I’m pretty sure I was in first grade when I memorized John 3:16 as part of my church’s memory work program. It was, after all, the quintessential pro-fession of faith, and you were never too young to start wrestling with it. But was it really true that all you had to do was believe in the Son sent by God the Father, and off you went to heaven? What about the kids whose parents never even took them to church? By third grade, I had a little more of this troublesome verse under my belt: it wasn’t the folks who’d never even heard about Jesus who had to worry, it was the people who said thanks but no thanks. And that just didn’t seem fair to me. They probably had their reasons. By high school, I was already flirting with atheism. In my twenties, I dived headfirst into Mortal Sin. At forty, appalled at the damage my willfulness had wreaked in my own and other people’s lives, I limped back to God. And suddenly that old verse looked different to me. Believing was only the first step. Then came obeying. And only after that came seeing and understand-ing. If as a child I’d caught a glimpse of the light but then sheered off in the other direction, what could God do about it? He’d left the decision to me, after all. Thank heaven, I thought, that the door was still open, the light still streaming through it.Paula Huston is a Camaldolese Benedictine oblate and the author of two novels and seven works of spiritual nonfiction.
