CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF CENTRAL TEXAS

ANNUAL REPORT2018-2019

ENGAGE. EDUCATE. EMPOWER.

Page 2: CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF CENTRAL TEXAS ANNUAL REPORT …

Dear CC Family,

With the passing of another year comes the opportunity to share all the good news and exciting updates from a year of service, care and advocacy here at Catholic Charities of Central Texas.

As always, the focus of our efforts is to engage, educate and empower Central Texas families out of poverty and into a brighter future. And as you will read in this report, our team efforts were made with great success! Through our work and collaboration, we know all too well that the need is great in our community. We must move forward with vision and conviction in order to create a Central Texas in which every person thrives in their God-given gifts and dignity.

To work toward this vision, Catholic Charities decided to place a special focus on planning for the future growth of our agency. At the core of this planning is the insight of our community partners, leadership, donors, board members and staff. Together we identified Catholic Charities’ key strengths and competitive advantages, with the goal of enhancing these strengths and building upon them. They will serve as the pillars of our organizational strategy now and into the future. After much deliberation (and some fun, too!) we identified our three biggest advantages—we are faith-driven, service-centered and community-focused.

Faith Driven. Our religious values and the Catholic Social Teachings are at the core of the work we do. Our partnerships with 123 parishes and 22 Catholic schools across our 25-county service region allow us to connect meaningfully with the communities we serve.

Service Centered. We offer six holistic programs under one roof to better meet the needs of our clients and their families. Our ability to provide internal referrals allows us to address poverty in all its forms—financial, social, spiritual or educational.

Community Focused. Catholic Charities tailors our services to meet the unique needs of those living in poverty in Central Texas. We connect with our clients on a deep and individual level through case management, allowing us to better understand their needs and be on the cutting edge as a service provider. At Catholic Charities, we work to build a stronger community by advocating for the most vulnerable among us and fostering relationships with community partners to amplify the impact of our efforts.

These three pillars will guide the future direction of Catholic Charities and help us expand access to our services for all families living in poverty within our 25-county service region. We will continue to be there for anyone in need regardless of race, religion, age, ethnicity or economic circumstance because that is what He calls us to do.

With deep roots and a strong path toward our future, I look forward to each trial and triumph that lies ahead. We have a plan, but His is better, and I can’t wait to see it unfold!

Sincerely,

Sara RamirezExecutive Director

I chose to serve on the board of Catholic Charities because I believe in their mission to go out to the margins where people are in need and bring them hope. In Killeen, there

is a great need not only for their services, but also to be the tangible presence of Christ in the midst of a broken world.– Rev. Chris Downey, Board Member

Pastor, St. Joseph Catholic Church, Killeen

CCCTX’s programs, services, and care focus on life’s most

complicated and difficult struggles and transforms lives in ways that no other organization does. I support CCCTX because I want to be part of that.– Julie Frey, Donor and

Ambassador Circle Member

I enjoy working with people who show commitment,

dedication and are professionals in every sense. It’s great to be part of an organization that is helping so many people.– Melinda Vaughn, Volunteer

To be a part of what gives hope to the hopeless is a privilege and a joy. I will never let this opportunity go since it fulfills what the Lord said: ‘Whatsoever you do to the least of my

brothers and sisters you do unto me.’ – Very Rev. Pedro Garcia Ramirez, Parish Partner Pastor, St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Marble Falls

When our Volunteer Grant Review Team reviewed

the application by Catholic Charities of Central Texas, they could clearly see how the financial stability programs being offered impact families right here in the Brazos Valley. We are proud to partner with Catholic Charities of Central Texas as we fight together for a stronger community.– Alison Prince, President/CEO,

United Way of the Brazos Valley, Grant Partner

I think Catholic Charities is helping those who need

help and also is offering an example of a practical way to follow Jesus’ example, who fed the hungry, healed those who were ill and blessed those who followed Him.  In gratitude for His love and because of my love for Him, I am trying to love those in need.– Dr. Ann Reed, Board Member

Catholic Charities of Central Texas continues to be a beacon of hope to those struggling with poverty and mental illness, to

pregnant women and new mothers, and to those affected by natural disasters. Catholic Charities serves all people of Central Texas because we see the face of Christ in all those we serve.– Most Rev. Joe S. Vásquez, Bishop of Austin

LOVE FINDS A HOME

Praise for He who puts kindness, compassion and dedication in people like Hannah and her Catholic Charities co-workers.– Sileshi Abebe

Sharew visits Catholic Charities of Central Texas one hot summer day, family in tow. His daughter, Nuhamin, clamors for her father to hold her. He picks her up gently, and Sharew and his wife Serkalem laugh together as Nuhamin squirms in his arms, confident that she will not fall with her father there to catch her.

It feels as though this must be how it’s always been. But for Sharew’s family, this togetherness is not to be taken for granted.

Sharew is from Ethiopia, a land of great beauty but with stifled economic opportunity. As a young man with energy and ambitions, Sharew saw more for his future than the path laid before him. So, he applied to the Diversity Immigrant Visa program. With luck, his application was approved.

But this opportunity was bittersweet. While moving to the United States would be the realization of a great dream, Sharew had a family and a beautiful wife at home in Ethiopia. Convinced that America was his best chance at a better future, Sharew took a leap of faith.

Sharew’s first years in Austin were challenging but exhilarating. He found a job and an apartment. He strove to learn a new language and adjust to life in a new country. But his heart was still in Ethiopia, and the few times he could afford to visit weren’t enough to fill the void.

Sharew and Serkalem worked through the proper legal channels to secure Serkalem’s acceptance into the United States, but the process was arduous and confusing. Each time he called for information, Sharew was met with a different answer. Deadlines shifted and important paperwork never arrived in the mail. They learned Serkalem’s case could cost up to $10,000—a backbreaking sum for a man starting a new life while supporting his wife in another country. And in the midst of this trial, a miracle. Serkalem learned she was pregnant with their first child.

What should have been a happy time became a dark period for Sharew. With pressure mounting, he worried the life he’d worked so hard to build could crumble. Serkalem would have to go through the pregnancy without Sharew, and he would miss those precious moments with her. Roadblocks continued to appear in Serkalem’s legal case. Their financial situation was increasingly dire, especially now with a child to consider. Sharew became distracted at work, lonely, and disheartened.

“I was considering going back to my country,” he said. Sharew’s face, typically cheerful, is cast in a rare shadow as he reflects on this difficult time.

With the birth of his child nearing and all options exhausted, Sharew turned to his new church community for help. There,

he met Sileshi, who assists members like Sharew with free translation services and support. Sileshi opened a new world for Sharew, and once Sileshi heard of the family’s legal challenges, he knew Catholic Charities could help.

Like many who arrive at the doorstep of Catholic Charities of Central Texas, Sharew did so with little hope. But his situation quickly changed when his Immigration Legal Services lawyer, Hannah Silk Kapasi, stepped in. A bright and experienced lawyer, Hannah was there to gather and organize evidence, submit paperwork, and monitor deadlines. She took care to explain the legal complexities to Sharew and ensure Serkalem’s case was on track. The services she provided rivaled that of any private attorney, but were offered at a cost Sharew could afford. And above all, Hannah practiced with dedication and compassion. “She took the case as if it was her own,” Sharew said.

It made all the difference.

One day—after months of effort from Hannah and the Catholic Charities Immigration Legal Services team—Sharew got the call he’d been dreaming of for five years. Hannah had secured Serkalem and Nuhamin’s acceptance into the United States. Their young family would finally be reunited.

“I have never felt such joy in my life,” he said. “It feels as if I am in a dream. Whenever I wake up from my sleep, I don’t believe they’re beside me.”

This journey did not come without sacrifice. Sharew and Serkalem were separated for five years. Serkalem was forced to face her pregnancy alone. Sharew missed his daughter’s birth and the memories of her first months of life. But they never had any doubt it was worth it.

Now far removed from that trying time, the family is all smiles and laughter at the Catholic Charities campus. When asked what she missed most about her husband, Serkalem says she missed his singing. As if to make up for lost time, and without thought to the room full of people, Sharew begins to serenade her. A lilting Ethiopian love song fills the room as their daughter sleeps peacefully between them. Their love is powerful, surely strong enough to stretch across oceans. But here, it has found a home.

The story of Sharew and his family is a testament to the power of hope, faith and community. Their story is one of many with a happy ending written at Catholic Charities of Central Texas.

Sileshi believes that one day, Nuhamin will be an author, and will write the story of her parents’ love and the life they built for her. Perhaps he is right. But whatever her path may be, Nuhamin now has the power to choose it.
