This year the requests forfood at Catholic Charitiesfood pantries have doubled. The housing crisis andunemployment have createdfinancial crises for manypeople. Many of the newlypoor have never faced suchdifficult financial situations.

We are asking you toplease consider helping withthis food crisis.

Whether you are apermanent resident or asnowbird, it will soon be time forspring cleaning or preparation foryour return to a northern home.Families and individuals can bringtheir excess canned or dry foods to alocal Catholic Charities food pantry.Included is a list of our food pantrieswith contact phone numbers.

An easy way to collect foodin your community is to ask yourclubhouse or parish if you couldcollect food at their facilities. Then, spread the word to your

neighbors or fellow parishionersthrough clubhouse signs orparish bulletin announcements.

Please remember that if youstart a food drive, you areresponsible for getting the foodto the local Catholic Charitiespantry. Many of our CatholicCharities offices cannot pick upfood items, and your churchcannot deliver them.

We appreciate your help in ourefforts to feed the hungry.

As you read this Annual Report andnewsletter, please remember the numbersof people served by Catholic Charitiesare much more than statistics. Everynumber represents a child, a family oran individual in need who came to oneof our 32 program sites here in our ten-county diocese.

In the past five years the funds required to allow CatholicCharities to serve more than 38,000 southwest Floridians havenearly doubled in order to meet ever increasing needs. This year’ssuccessful annual Christmas Appeal saw more good people thanever reach deep into their pockets to assist in our work with thepoor. (Please read our message of Thanks on page 8.)

This newsletter also provides you with a snapshot, an overviewof our programs that reach far and wide through our diocese—food pantries, Christmas programs, fundraising events (three ofsix completed and all six will have been held by the time thisnewsletter reaches you. Please see the story on page 3.)

Looking at a year that is projected to be filled with financialchallenges for many, Catholic Charities will be better preparedthan expected because of your generosity. Please continue to prayfor our work and the people we help.

Thank you for being our supporters through your prayers, yourvolunteering and your contributions. The entire Catholic Charitiescommunity—those of us who work here and those we areprivileged to serve—appreciates all you do to help children, families and individuals in need.

May God bless you,

Peter Routsis-ArroyoChief Executive Officer

Venice - Mothers and childrenof Our Mother’s House (OMH)were treated to a “beary” specialevent, thanks to a grant from theBuild-A-Bear Workshop BearHugs Foundation.

Residents of the OMH programwent to the Build-A-Bear store inSarasota Square Mall and createda lovable stuffed animal. The toywill be used in “Mommy and Me”and Parenting Education classes.

The process of building astuffed animal encouragedfriendship and nurturing skills forthe mothers and children. The firststep was to pick an animal, suchas a bear, rabbit, alligator or cat.Next, a voice is chosen for theanimal with the option of arecorded message. “Many of themothers decided to tape a specialmessage to their child for thevoice,” said Joyce Scott, programdirector of Our Mother’s House.

The children then chose a heartto put inside their animal but

before doing so they gave it a kiss. After the animal was stuffed andwashed, the clothes were selected. The workshop finished with thechildren choosing a name andcreating a birth certificate for theirspecial new stuffed animal.

“The grant also will provide aparenting educator who willincorporate the stuffed animals intothe classes,” said Scott. “We try to
