Term 2 -Week 10 - 4th July 2018

Catherine McAuley

It is almost hard to believe that the school year has reached the mid way

point and we will soon be in discussions about all those things relating to

2019! The holidays are a wonderful chance to recharge the batteries of

both parents and children. Family lives can be very busy "industries"

these days and holidays are a chance to stop the taxi service, the sporting

and social appointment book and relax at home "doing nothin". It is

indeed an art these days for some people to be able to fill in time without

the assistance of an appointment book! It is important that children are

able to amuse themselves and make their own fun, sometimes even

without the use of a screen!

I remind all parents that the first day of next term is a pupil free day and

school will commence on Tuesday July 24th.

Michael Croke

God knows I would rather be

cold and hungry than the poor

in Kingstown or elsewhere

should be deprived of any

consolation in our power to

afford.

Pupil Free Day

Monday 23rd July 2018

(First day back Term 3)

Before & After School Care at McAuley: We have been given the clearance to begin OSHC at McAuley.

Our start date is Tuesday 24th July. It has taken a while to be granted the official approval but I am sure it will be

worth it. Applications for enrolment are available in the school front office and the school website (when it

is up and running). Centacare will run the McAuley OSHC. They are currently recruiting staff and the enrolments

will go through them. Enrolments can be emailed to [email protected] or dropped into the

school office.

Southern Region Athletics Carnival: The Southern Region Athletics Carnival will be held on Thursday 2nd

August in Blayney. Notes have been sent home with the children who will represent Catherine McAuley at the

carnival.

SPB4L Committee: On Tuesday of this week the SPB4L Committee consisting of Marg Wright, Debbie

Prestwidge, Jennene Carpenter, Georgie Haydon, Anne Mulligan, Helen Croke, Scott Hudson, Michael Croke and

myself met to devise a new reward system to compliment our new minor and major incident structure. It as a very

successful meeting and we will explain it to the students and parents next term. The purpose of this system is to

support our school rules: To be Respectful, Responsible and Safe. The new system is aimed at acknowledging

students who consistently follow expectations of behaviour at McAuley.

Pupil Free Day: Monday, 23rd July will be a pupil free day with the staff spending the day working on the

English programming, writing and SPB4L reward system.

Whole School Assembly: KS will present their work at the next Whole School Assembly this Friday 6th July

commencing at 12.30pm in Kenna Hall. All welcome.

Peer Support: I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Year 6 students and teachers for all their time and

effort in running our Peer Support program this term. It is an extremely valuable program that enhances

relationships and the culture of our school.

Out of Bounds: No child is allowed to leave the school grounds without permission. No child is allowed to

walk to the shops and then come back to school to catch a bus. Occasionally balls will be kicked or thrown

over the fences surrounding the playground. Children are not permitted to leave the school grounds to get a ball.

If a teacher has time they may be able to retrieve it otherwise parents can go and ask the neighbours if they can

retrieve it after school. Often the neighbours will throw balls back over the fence or return them.

Technology at School: A reminder that students are not to have mobile phones, ipods and other technology at

school. If it is necessary that they bring such a device then it is to be given to the class teacher at the beginning of

the day and collected at the conclusion of school. Important messages can be delivered via the school office.

From the Assistant Principal

McAuley School Rules

BE RESPECTFUL - BE RESPONSIBLE - BE SAFE

FOCUS FOR THE FORTNIGHT: We are responsible and safe within our school environment.

It is all of our responsibility to ensure we act responsibly in our school to ensure the safety of others. All

members of our school community must keep their hands and feet to themselves and follow all school rules.

From the Religious Education Coordinator

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time: This week’s Gospel from St Mark sees Jesus returning to his home

town of Nazareth. He is well and truly into his public ministry and his reputation as a healer and teacher is

growing. However, the locals are quick to put ‘this boy’ back in his place. They remember him as the kid that

grew up in the town. He’s nobody important as far as they are concerned. Today local communities are much

the same. No matter how successful a person may have become, a trip home will quickly remind them that in

the eyes of those they grew up with, nothing has changed. Why would they think they had anything to learn

from someone who grew up in their own town? What could he possibly tell them? They try to force Jesus

back into the mould of the person with whom they were previously familiar and comfortable. Today’s Gospel

reminds us that we can fail to see the value of those with whom we are very familiar. Although we say that we

seek the face of Christ in the face of those we meet, it may not at times occur to us to look on our family and

close friends in the same way. It may seem unlikely that God might come to us in a family member or friend.

Perhaps next time when someone we know and love annoys us by challenging our words or actions, we

should remind ourselves that we are looking into the face of God.

“Assist – a – Student” Casual Clothes Day: This Friday 6th July, is casual clothes day to raise money to

assist with the education and living conditions of the children we are sponsoring in Fiji. All children are

invited to wear casual clothes to school and bring a gold coin donation. We began to assist several families

through this program three years ago, and now some of these children have finished school, and in some

cases, gone on to University! This program, which runs in conjunction with St Vincent de Paul, helps cover

the educational expenses of these children in Fiji, assisting students with the costs entailed in completing their

primary and secondary education. The money raised on Friday will go directly to these families in need. We

have received lovely thank you letters from the students, along with updates on their educational progress. I

have put these together in a presentation, which our children will see, so they can understand just how much

help we can offer for so little. Once again, could I please ask you to continue your support for this wonderful

program by sending children to school dressed in casual clothes, and offering a gold coin donation.

Confirmation: Enrolments for Confirmation have now closed for this year. If you have not completed your

child’s enrolment, you will now have to wait until next year to do so. Year 6 have now begun their

preparation to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, which will be administered by Bishop Michael

McKenna on the weekend of 4th and 5th August 2018. Bishop Michael will also be visiting the Year 6 students

on Friday 3rd August as part of their preparation. Please keep the Year 6 Confirmation candidates and their

teachers in your prayers as they begin this journey towards full Initiation into the Catholic Church.

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me; He sent me to bring Good News to

the poor. Luke 4:18

Jeans for Genes Day: Just an early reminder that we will once again be participating in “Jeans for Genes” day

on Friday 3rd August. Each year our students wear casual clothes and make a gold coin donation to help medical

research into childhood diseases. There have been some wonderful breakthroughs in recent years, and we are

continually supporting the development of increased medical knowledge on how to help children beat some of the

awful medical problems they face. Mark it on the calendar to get your Jeans out!!

God Bless,

Robyn Petty

Kindergarten Excursion

On Friday 29th June, Kindergarten visited Glenroi Heights Public School for a Cultural Exchange Day, as part of

the Kindergarten History Unit. Glenroi school leaders warmly welcomed Catherine McAuley to their school with

a cultural workshop of PRIDE and HONOUR.

The Glenroi students began the day with a welcome dance and an acknowledgement of country. They amazed the

Kindergarten students and staff with their connecting dance that highlighted traditional indigenous movements and

actions. The Glenroi students then taught Kindergarten many indigenous dance movements, with the boys being

hunters and girls gathering, along with many animal movements. The children demonstrated their connection with

the land and ability to share that with others. Throughout our visit, Glenroi Public School staff and leaders guided

us through a rotation of dance, traditional indigenous games and experiencing "Johnny Cakes" made on hot coals.

We would like to sincerely thank Mrs Kylie Greatbatch, Glenroi Public School Staff and the helpful leaders, for

all their help, time, efforts and enthusiasm, in providing such a valuable day of learning and celebrating the

indigenous culture in our local community.

Kindergarten enjoyed recess at the Adventure Playground with a fun play on the equipment before returning to

school.

Kindergarten had a wonderful day.

Important information for Parents from the Office of the

Children’s Guardian

People who work with my kids

Anyone who works face-to-face with your child must have a Working With Children Check

clearance (or a completed application in progress), unless they qualify for an exemption. It does

not matter whether they are paid, volunteering or self- employed.

This includes people that you may personally engage to work directly with your children, such as:

au pairs and nannies (except privately arranged babysitting)

tutors

sporting coaches

music teachers.

Verify clearances online

If you directly engage a person in child-related work, you need to verify their Working With

Children Check number online before they commence work.

The process to verify a person online is quick and simple:

Visit https://www.kidsguardian.nsw.gov.au (Parents section)

Visit the verification page for individuals

Enter your details in the form

Enter in the workers family name, birth date, Working With Children Check number or

Application number.

Click the Submit button at the bottom-right of the page

You will receive an email (or a letter if you do not provide an email address) with the status of

that person's Working With Children Check (e.g. "Cleared", "Barred" or "Not found").

Visit the Employer Verification page to see what each possible status means.

Please note if a person is barred, interim barred or not found then you cannot engage them in

child-related work.

Interesting Fact of the Week

The 2003 invasion of Iraq was initially

called “Operation Iraqi Liberation”, but

was quickly changed to “Operation Iraqi

Freedom” due to the acronym spelling

out “OIL”.
