    MAY 24, 2020

  • Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception May 24, 2020 Dear Cathedral Parishioners and ICCS Community,

This past week, we had our Eighth Grade Closing Mass and Graduation (May 20th) and our Second Grade First Communion (May 23rd). Congratulations to all our Eighth Graders and First Communicants! Credits to their teachers for preparing our students well and to Mrs. Rose Viau, our Director of Religious Education, for get-ting everything ready for these special liturgies. We are truly blessed to have been able to hold these liturgical celebrations in our newly restored Cathedral, despite the limitations imposed on us by the state as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. As we close this unique and unusual school year 2019-2020, I would like to take the opportunity to express my sincerest gratitude to God, to our school administration, teachers, parents, and students! I am grateful to God, first and foremost, for all the blessings and graces of the past year. Our school (ICCS) was well-prepared and well-equipped to handle the challenges of long distance learning, which was forced upon us unexpectedly by the coronavirus pandemic. This was largely due to the ef-forts of Mrs. Christi Jarreau, our Principal, and Mrs. Blair Tadlock, who had the vision to implement curriculum changes that proved to be beneficial during the height of the pandemic, equipping our school with the latest edu-cational tools and technology that helped our teachers continue to teach their students outside the normal school campus setting. Our teachers and students rose up to the challenge, working so hard and innovatively no matter how stressful and frustrating it got at times. Ku-dos to our parents, who have generously given of their time, talent, and treasure to educate and discipline their children at home! The Church reminds us in the Cate-chism that the parents are the first teachers of their chil-dren, especially in the ways of faith. For your love, dedi-cation and generosity, I commend and thank you! As we move towards the summer and start preparing for the next school year, let us continue to pray for those in our community who are sick, for those who care for them, for those who have lost a loved one during this difficult time, for continuous improvement our situation, and for the end of this pandemic. Trusting in the help and loving providence of our good and merciful God, we can look forward to a future filled with confidence, hope, courage, strength and faith! Sincerely in Our Lord & Our Lady, Father Rommel P. Tolentino

Our Cathedral Parish is happy to welcome our “Seminarian for the Summer” Hunter LaRocca, who will be in residence here June and July! My name is Hunter LaRocca and I am a seminarian for the Diocese of Lake Charles. I am originally from Lacas-sine. I attended Lacassine High School and graduated from there in 2014. I attended Sowela Technical Com-munity college from 2014-2016 and graduated with an Associates Degree in Accounting, and began working in the banking industry. After working for about a year, I began to start thinking about my vocation and where the Lord was calling me in my life. Growing up I was told by my family, friends, and even teachers that I would make a good priest. I kind of dismissed that path regarding it as something that I did not think I was called too. As the years went on, I sort of wanted to control my own path in life and did what I thought was going to bring me happiness, by doing just that I realized that the path I was taking was not bringing me happiness and fulfillment. While I was in college, I got back into my faith. I started going to church more, became involved with the New-man Club Center at Our Lady of Good Counsel, and ex-perienced a conversion in the midst of it all. I started praying about my vocation and started asking God more frequently what He wanted from me. I became more open and drawn to the idea of becoming a priest. I spent a year at the Vianney House, while going back to school at McNeese. It was a very good experience to live with a parish priest and to experience what it is like day in and day out for him. In the year I was there, I felt the call be-coming more and more present in my life and decided to take the next step and apply for the seminary. In the first year of seminary I experienced what it is like to live in a new city with a new community, and it has born much fruit ever since I started. I am now going into my second year of formation at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans. I am looking forward to a wonderful and fruitful summer here at the Cathedral!

    MEMORIAL DAY IN LOVING MEMORY

    OF THOSE WHO HAVE FALLEN

God of power and mercy, you destroy war and put down earthly pride.

Banish violence from our midst and wipe away our tears, that we may all deserve to be called

your sons and daughters. Keep in your mercy those men and women who have

died in the cause of freedom and bring them safely into your kingdom of justice and peace.

We ask this though Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Salus Populi Romani Protectress and Health of the Roman People

    Prayer against the Coronavirus

O Mary, you shine continuously along our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the Cross were near to the pain of Jesus, keeping your faith firm. You, Salvation of the Roman people, know what we need, and we trust that you will provide for those needs so that, as at Cana of Galilee, joy and cele-bration may return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the will of the Father and to do what Jesus tells us, He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and took up our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every dan-ger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

Given the circumstances, Bishop Provost is providing this prayer for the use of the faithful:

    An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least into my heart. I embrace You as if You are already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. (You may make this Act of Spiritual Communion any-time you need it and as often as you need it.)

  • Our parishioner, Mr. Roland Bodin, has generously donated crosses and crèches that he built from the kneelers that were taken out of the church during the restoration.
