Dear Parishioners and Friends,

I am writing to tell you about the latest scam that has af-fected our own, and make you aware of it. Last week sev-eral parishioners from different parishes in our Diocese received a text or email pretending to be from the Pastor asking for help or donation - a $500 gift card. Unfortunately, some people fell for it and got scammed. It was reported to the police who responded by saying there is nothing that can be done, except pass the word and be more diligent in the future. Please be careful of scammers! We don’t want anyone to be taken in. Here is a good article from the Federal Trade Commission about this particular scam: We’re seeing a new spin on gift card scams. This time, scammers are pretending to be a pastor, rabbi, priest, imam, or bishop. They’re asking worshipers for gift card contributions for a worthy cause. Appeals are often made by email, but we’ve heard people are also getting texts and phone calls, too. The bogus emails often include the name of the local pastor and a legitimate looking email address. But a closer look should raise some red flags. For example, the email address isn’t the one normally used by the church, and the service provider is different, too. The message may begin with a simple “Hi,” but doesn’t include a recipi-ents’ name. There also may be spelling errors, including the pastor’s name. The imposter asks you to buy a popular gift card — frequently, iTunes, Google Play, or Amazon — and then asks for the gift card number and PIN on the back of the card. Those numbers let the scammer immediately get the money you loaded onto the card. And once that’s done, the scammer and your money are gone, usually without a trace. If you or someone you know paid a scammer with a gift card, report it as soon as possible. Call the card com-pany and tell them the gift card was used in a scam. Here is contact information for some of the gift card companies that scammers use most often. Then, tell the FTC about it at ftc.gov/complaint. Your reports may help law enforce-ment agencies launch investigations that could stop im-posters and other fraudsters in their tracks.

Report gift card scams

Amazon: Call 1 (888) 280-4331 Google Play: Call 1 (855) 466-4438 iTunes: Call Apple Support at 1 (800) 275-2273, then say “gift card” to be connected to a live representative. Steam: ꞏIf you have a Steam account, you can report gift card scams online

MoneyPak: Call 1 (866) 795-7969

For more information, visit https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/blog/2019/07/worshipers-targeted-gift-card-scam. Again, please be careful! These scammers are using email, phone calls, and texts to try and perpetrate their scams. If parishioners get a text or an email from some-one claiming to be one of our Priests, they should immedi-ately contact the church office through another means, like a phone call, to verify that they are actually dealing with that Priest. They should be wary of any requests for im-mediate assistance from the clergy, especially asking for specific gift cards in a high amount. Thank you for your generous support of our Church and our Parishes! Let's all be vigilant and continue to pray for safety and security of our families. Sincerely in Our Lord and Our Lady, Fr. Rommel P. Tolentino

Louisiana Conference of Catholic Bishops Support the Love Life Amendment to the Louisiana Constitution

"The Louisiana Conference of Catholic Bishops strongly supports the Love Life Amendment, which would successfully amend the Louisiana constitution and thereby continue to strengthen our commit-ment to end abortion in the state. Citizens of our state will have the opportunity to affirmatively state that they "Love Life" on

November 3 — the same day as the United States presi-dential election — by favoring this amendment. As Catholics, we are called to ensure that life is indeed valued and that the dignity of all is upheld. This is the foun-dational principle of our social teaching and must be inten-tionally considered in all that we do. Passage of the Love Life Amendment would have a dual effect. Primarily, it will ensure that the state of Louisiana cannot establish a right to abortion at present or if Roe v. Wade is overturned in the future. Secondly, it will prohibit the funding of abortion through taxpayer dollars within our constitution. Without such an amendment, the invalidation of the many anti-abortion laws we have all advocated so strongly for in Louisiana remains a possibility. The Louisiana Conference of Catholic Bishops therefore enthusiastically supports the Love Life Amendment, and encourages all to approach this initiative with a formed conscience and a commitment to defend the sanctity of human life and uphold the dignity of all people." There is no easy way around the pain of losing a loved one. Grief has no rules and no timetables. Understanding the griev-ing process can soothe the doubts that linger. Learn about the

“surprises” of grief and the emotions that affect you physically, mentally and spiritually. In this sixweek series you will learn

about normal grief and hopefully gain a renewed sense of hope. Come and learn, share feelings and ask questions to gather hints

about picking up the pieces after loss. When: Mondays 19th, 26th,

St. Martha St. Peter St. Ignatius of July 29 Chrysologus Loyola July 30 July 31

Given the circumstances, Bishop Provost is providing this prayer for the use of the faithful:

An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least into my heart. I embrace You as if You are already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. (You may make this Act of Spiritual Communion any-time you need it and as often as you need it.)

ATTENDING MASS DURING THE PANDEMIC RESTRICTIONS/REMINDERS/SUGGESTIONS

Per Bishop Provost: “The dispensation from the

obligation to attend Holy Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligations remains in effect. Those experiencing symptoms should seek medical at-tention and remain at home.”

If you are not feeling well, or if someone in your family is ill, please do not attend Mass.

Holy water is provided in small containers at each entrance. Please limit one per family so that eve-ryone may get one.

To adhere to social distancing, do not sit in the roped off pews.

Please wear a mask. Please avoid touching the pews or other church

surfaces unnecessarily (ushers/volunteers must thoroughly disinfect after each Mass).

There will be separate communion lines for re-ceiving in the hand or on the tongue.

No singing by the congregation is allowed. No missalettes. The sign of peace is temporarily suspended. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are

not to distribute Communion. Do not use the drinking fountain in the foyer of

the day chapel.

Prayer for Safety in Hurricane Season

O God, Master of this passing world, Hear the hum-ble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed Your order and returned to its former quie-tude. You are still the Master of the land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy and overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season, we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and ani-mated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heav-enly Jerusalem where stormless eternity awaits us. Amen

+The Most Reverend Maurice Schexnayder 2nd Bishop of Lafayette

Salus Populi Romani Protectress and Health of the Roman People

Prayer against the Coronavirus

O Mary, you shine continuously along our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the Cross were near to the pain of Jesus, keeping your faith firm. You, Salvation of the Roman people, know what we need, and we trust that you will provide for those needs so that, as at Cana of Galilee, joy and celebration may return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform our-selves to the will of the Father and to do what Je-sus tells us, He who took our sufferings upon Him-self, and took up our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every dan-ger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.
