POPE FRANCIS PROCLAIMS “YEAR OF SAINT JOSEPH”

With the Apostolic Letter “Patris corde” (“With a Father’s Heart”), Pope Francis recalls the 150th anniversary of the declaration of Saint Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church. To mark the occasion, the Holy Father has proclaimed a “Year of Saint Joseph” from December 8, 2020 to December 8, 2021. Pope Francis describes Saint Joseph as a beloved father, a tender and loving father, an obedient father, an accepting father; a father who is creatively courageous, a working father, a father in the shadows. Pope Francis, quoting his predecessor St. Paul VI, wrote: “Saint Joseph, in fact, ‘concretely expressed his fatherhood’ by making an offering of himself in love ‘a love placed at the service of the Messiah who was growing to maturity in his home. And, because of his role at ‘the crossroads between the Old and New Testament,’ St. Joseph ‘has always been venerated as a father by the Christian people’ (PC, 1). In him, ‘Jesus saw the tender love of God,’ the one that helps us accept our weakness, because ‘it is through’ and despite ‘our fears, our frailties and our weakness’ that most divine designs are realized. ‘Only tender love will save us from the snares of the accuser,’ emphasizes the Pontiff, and it is by encountering God’s mercy especially in the Sacrament of Reconciliation that we ‘experience His truth and tenderness,’ - because we know that God’s truth does not condemn us, but instead welcomes, embraces, and sustains and forgives us” (2). LITURGY OF THE WORD December 27, 2020 - Holy Family

Genesis 15:1-6, 21:1-3 The Lord’s promise to Abram and Sarah is fulfilled. Psalm 105 “The Lord remembers His covenant forever.” Hebrews 11:8, 11-12,17-19 The faith of Abraham, Sarah and Isaac. Luke 2:22-40 The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. Family is of great importance in the wide scope of God’s work here on earth. God assures Abram that his descendants will be as numerous as the stars in the sky, though at the time, prospects for even one child were bleak; and later, he was ready to offer his only son in a test of his faith. Together, Mary and Joseph brought their infant Son to the temple to consecrate him to the Lord. Listening to today’s readings, let us ask for God’s grace upon our own families and our descendants.
