The ensemble is comprised of se-lect singers, drawn exclusively from the rich talent of the col-lege’s sophomore class. MUSIC AT LUTHER

Martin Luther—our namesake—believed music to be “one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us.” For more than 130 years Luther

students have been sharing this marvelous gift with audiences across the country and around the globe.

Music is much more than a gift, though. It’s an integral part of the community of faith and the community of learning on campus. The arts are fundamental to the liberal arts experience at Luther; they help define what it means to be human. Here creative scholarship, personal growth, worship, and social relations merge to create an understanding of the wholeness of life.

The vibrancy of Luther’s music program is rooted in a balance between the academic rigor of our acclaimed music major and the numerous opportunities for study and performance by students from all disciplines across campus.

The Luther campus is alive with the sounds of six choirs, three bands, three orchestras, two jazz bands, and nearly 1,000 student musicians. Our students perform in large ensembles, faculty-coached chamber groups, private lessons, and master classes. Nearly 300 music majors study music theory, ear training, history, education, composition, church music, and performance. It all adds up to one of the largest collegiate music programs in the world!

Luther College

Founded in 1861 by Norwegian immigrants, Luther College provides its 2,500 students with a classic liberal arts education.

Luther offers more than 60 majors and pre-professional and certificate programs leading to the bachelor of arts degree. The college’s strong academic program includes internships, professional semesters, and extensive study-abroad opportunities. Dedicated and talented faculty help Luther students develop solid research, writing, and critical-thinking skills, while the close-knit community imbues its members with a service ethic.

The Phi Beta Kappa college is bolstered by its Lutheran foundation, celebrated for its vibrant music and arts tradition, and enriched by its strong athletic program.

INTERMISSION

PART THREE

Freedom’s LandBrooke JoyceAnother cloud hangs over my head, and dangers thickly

press,But still I trust in God alone for succour and success.

With confidence and faith and hope, misfortunes do I stand,Until with pleasure and with joy, I tread on freedom’s land.—James Watkins (c. 1821–unknown)

SleepEric WhitacreThe evening hangs beneath the moon, a silver thread on

darkened dune. With closing eyes and resting head I know that sleep is

coming soon.Upon my pillow, safe in bed, a thousand pictures fill my

head,I cannot sleep, my mind’s aflight; and yet my limbs seem

made of lead.If there are noises in the night, a frightening shadow,

flickering light; Then I surrender unto sleep, where clouds of dream give

second sight. What dreams may come, both dark and deep,Of flying wings and soaring leap as I surrender unto sleep.—Charles Anthony Silvestri

Love never endsEleanor DaleyWhere there is charity and love, God is there. (sung in Latin)Love is patient, love is kind.Love is not jealous or boastful, it is not arrogant or rude.

Love does not insist on its own way.It is not irritable or resentful. Love does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right.Love bears all things, love believes all things,Love hopes all things, love endures all things.Love never ends.—I Corinthians 13:13:4–8a

Shepherd PsalmPeter MayerThe Lord is my shepherd and nothing shall I need. You bid me to lie safely down in open pastures green.

You lead me to the waters still, lift up my weary soul,And guide me on to goodness path, within your grace, I go.

Through valleys deep, death’s shadow steep,You fail me not, though fears I keep,For you are here to guide me, guard and comfort,A friend beside me.

There is a table set for me, as I still face my foes.Your blessings rain upon my head and my cup overflows.

Surely your goodness and your love shall follow all my days.Forever make my heart your home, [your] house my dwell-

ing place.—Psalm 23 paraphrase, P. Mayer

Tshotsholoza [Go forward]Traditional South African, arr. Jeffrey AmesTranslation (sung in a mixture of the Zulu and Ndebele

dialects):Go forward on those mountains; The train is coming from South Africa. You are running away on those mountains; The train is coming from South Africa.

Didn’t my Lord deliver Daniel?Traditional spiritual, arr. Moses Hogan (1957–2003)

Refrain:Didn’t my Lord deliver Daniel, then why not every man?

He delivered Daniel from the lion’s den, Jonah from the belly of the whale. And the Hebrew children from the fiery furnace, and why not every man? Hallelujah!

The wind blows east and the wind blows west, it blows like the judgment day.And every poor sinner that never did pray will be glad to pray that day. Hallelujah!

I set my foot on the Gospel shipAnd the ship it begin to sail.It landed me over on Canaan’s shore, And I’ll never come back anymore. Hallelujah!
