ll eyes are on London as it hosts the zorz Olympics,

and standing atop the "starchitect" dais will beZaha

Hadid, designer of the London Aquatics Centre,

which forms the gateway to the Olympic Park. This

brilliant architect reveals how London has shaped her personally

and professionally, and what she thinks makes the city a creative

capital. Hadid also opens up her little black book for us, and among

her picks is the Serpentine Gallery. lts annual summer pavilion

has become an essential visitor attraction and this year, power

architects Herzog and de Meuron collaborate with Chinese artist

Ai Weiwei. Blazing a trail in the literary world is Shin Kyung-sook,

the first woman and South Korean writer to win the Man Asian

Literary Prize. Find out what inspires her in our profile. Fashion

designer Lu Lu Cheung has carved out a name for herselfin her

home city of Hong Kong, and she shares with us her top picks.

The northern Japanese city of Sapporo is often associated with

ice festivals, but with its parks, lavender fields, an iconic beer and

delicious ramen, its appeal is evident year round. And something

to look forward to in August is the launch of Discovery in digital

format, so you can enjoy the magazine even if you're not flying.

The Cath^y Pacific story H#{SHIt all began with the entrepreneurialvision of two former World War ll pilots,American Roy Farrell and Australian Sydney de Kantzowm&ffi iEtt# -,XEFttrE ffi Hfi

- * E # Hi Roy Farre | |tflEiltl#

fti Syd n ey de Kantzow' lEff €* IEJ EIEIEE, H:e|| - ffi H#- EAFTER WORLD WAR ll, Roy Farrell and Sydneyde Kantzow spotted an opportunity to startpassenger and cargo flights out of Shanghai.Early in t946, they moved their enterprise toHong Kong and in September ofthe same year,

paid H K$r apiece to register the airline. Theynamed it Cathay Pacific Airways: Cathay, theancient name for China, and Pacific, because thefar-sighted Farrell speculated that one day theairline might fly across the ocean.

The fledgling airline consisted ofjust twoUS Army surplus DC3 aircraft: Betsy and Niki.By :.948, Cathay Pacific was serving Rangoon,Singapore, Bangkok, Maniia and Macau, with a

fleet ofseven DC3s and one Catalina flying boat.In the same year, a majority shareholding

was acquired by Hong Kong trading companyButterfield & Swire and under the aggressiveleadership of its Chairman, J.K. Swire,Cathay Pacific continued to grow. At the time,Swire was already well established as the city'sleading airline agency, having founded PacificAir Maintenance, which later became HongKong Aircraft Engineering Co. Ltd.

In 1949, the airline acquired its first four-engine aircraft, a Douglas DC4 Skymaster, followed by its first pressurised aircraft, theDC6, in 1955. Under Swire management, theairline entered a period ofrapid expansion.By t959, Cathay Pacific's growing regionalnetwork included Australia and Japan, and in1962 the airline entered the jet age with thearrival of its first General Dynamics Convair 88o.

The r97o decision to equip with Boeing 7o7sopened the door to long-range flights, settingCathay Pacific on course for services to theMiddle East in 1976, enabling the airline toenter the lucrative air-cargo sector. The airlineupdated its regional fleet with wide-bodiedLockheed Lrorr TriStars and, with the deliveryofits first Boeing747-zoo, inaugurated a HongKong-London service in r98o. Cathay Pacific

was the world's first airline to take delivery ofthe Rolls-Royce-powered 87 47 - 4o o in ry8g,bringing destinations such as Vancouver,London and Los Angeles within nonstop range.

In r995 Cathay Pacific introduced AirbusA33o-3oos and A34o-3oos to the fleet and in1998 became the launch customer ofthe newBoeing777-3oo - the world's largest twin-engine commercial aircraft. In zooz, the airlineintroduced its first ultra-long-haul AirbusA34o-6oo and is currently expanding its fleetwith the purchase of3o Boeing 777-3ooER"Extended Range" aircraft that will form thebackbone ofits long-haul passenger fleet in theyears to come. Cathay Pacific is also investingheavily in its freighter fleet, with six Boeing

Beloved Betsy PF'BetsyOur first aircraft "Betsy", a converted Douglas

DC3, is remembered fondly. Betsy's first flight,in February 1946, carried clothes from Sydney toShanghai. At different times, Betsy has carriedpassengers, oysters and even day-old chicks.

Sold in 1955, Betsy was discovered almost

747-4ooERFs and ro new-generation Boeing

747-8Fsbeing delivered by the end ofzorz.Cathay Pacific City, the company's regional

headquarters at Hong Kong InternationalAirport, was completed in mid-r999. ln zooz,Cathay Pacific and DHL becamejoint venturepartners in Air Hong Kong, which now has afleet ofeight Airbus 3oo freighter aircraft andan expanding regional network for expressovernight cargo deliveries.

In zoo6, Cathay Pacific celebrated its 6othanniversary and cemented its position in theregion with an agreement that brought Dragonairinto the group as a wholly owned subsidiary.

The deal created a synergy ofenergies by

bringing together Cathay Pacifi c's internationaloperation with Dragonair's extensive network,

which now includes more than t5 citiesin Mainland China. At the same time,Cathay Pacific established a closerrelationship with Air China, with each

airline taking a 17.5 percent stake in theother. More information on Cathay Pacificis available on our websire:www.cathaypacific.com
