Absolute: 5º 00' 00'' N and 59º 00' 00'' W

Relative: Guyana is bordering Suriname

(East), Brazil (South), Venezuela (West), and

the Caribbean Sea (North).

Guyana is located in

nothern South America.

Guyanas national capital is

called Goergetown.

Other important cities

are Linden and New

Amsterdam.

There are 10 regions.

Place I

The Amazon Forest

The Amazon forest is a rainforest passing through 9

different countries. The majority is in Brazil followed by

Peru and Colombia. With small parts in it are Venezuela

Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.

Kaiter Falls

Kaiter Falls is a breathtaking waterfall on the Potaro River,

central Guyana. It is 226 meters high (about three times

higher than the Niagara Falls.) It is one of the most

powerful waterfalls in the world because of it‘s great

height and volume.

Place II

Guyana Mountains

The Guyana mountains form the border between Guyana,

Brazil and Venezeula. The highest mountain is called

Roraima Tepui. It is 2,810 m high.

Essequibo River

The Essequibo River is the longes river in Guyana. It is

about 1,000 km long and flows from the Guyana

mountains to the north into the Atlantic Ocean.

Human Characteristics

Guyana gained it‘s independence on May 26 1966.

The president of Guyana is called Donald Ramotar.

The people could only elect their own government after

it became an independant country before it was ruled

by Great Britain.

Guyana is the only country in South American where

the main language is English.

People in Guyana talk with their hands, especially when

they are angry or excited.

The main religions are Christianity, Hinduism and Islam.

The currency in Guyana is a Guyanese Dollar (1 Rand =

24.5 Guyanese Dollars).

Human-Enviromental Interaction

Already in the 18th century Dutch settlers built

dams to protect the lowlands along the coast

from the sea. But still today scientist believe that

climate change and the raising sea level pose a

threat to Guyana.

Deforestation is a result of humans cutting down

the trees in the rainforest for use of land,

agriculture and the paper industry.

Movement

Before the new government, people blamed Burham

(Prime Minister) and PNC (Peoples National Congress)

for the hardship. Now they got a better government,

what‘s the problem? People are leaving because of the

poverty in Guyana. Lot‘s left while Burham ruled. The new

government wants to know more about the people

leaving, and the reasons why.
