    A Section Reviewby Ross Booth

Is the four settled? The four top side all won last Saturday . Scotch's two consecutive narrow losses now meantwill be very hard for them to make the four. No rt h are still in touch but what an awful pecentage! In any casewho could they tip out - De La Salle?

By the way, have you noticed the tilt Peter French had at me last week? I must admit he is partly justifiedbecause I only tipped 4 out of 10 in A and B Sections this week . But at least I have a stab at each game. Peter, you only had 4 tips in A Section last week! !

Keep looking for interesting typographical errors . The Old Paradians ruckman is Brian Grills, not "Rick" Bri-an Grills! I also notice St . Bernards had 25 points from 6 wins in last weeks B Section ladder !

Down to business . Last week's round was one of those slogging days - persistence, determination and earlygoals are vital .

OP's bounced back with a big win - the biggest of the round . They led by only 13 points at half time but6 goals in the third quarter and 7 goals in the last gave them a big lead . The margin would have been greaterbut for a 5 goal burst by Collegians in the last 10 minutes of the game . Parade had a winning centreline ofTed Flynn, Ter ry Board & Brendan Exton and unlike last week were first to the ball . The high scoring is atribute to the surface conditions at Elsternwick Park .

Old Scotch was pipped by a point by Caulfield Grammarians at Swan Street. Caulfield had a better thirdquarter, went to a 3 goal lead and had the first goal in the last. That was enough, even with a strong Scotchcomeback. Ian Kyte was Caulfield's best as a ruck-rover and for the Cardinals big Duncan McCall performedadmirably.

Second placed Old Xaverians scored a 17 point win over North Old Boys in filthy conditions at Royal Park .It was a very low scoring game, with Xavs kicking 3 goals in the second quarter to slip away from North whowere goalless till three-quarter time . Two quick goals to North put them back in it, but it wasn't to be. AnthonyCallan, Geoff Greatham, Ralph O'Shaughnessy & Paul Curtain defended stoutly. Paul Considine (CHB)played his best game for some time for North .

Top side Ormond scored a 40 point win over University Blues. It was an entertaining game in spite of theconditions . Blues Team Manager Ted McNamara was much happier with their performance last week . I noticePhil Grutzner & Bernie Anjel back for Uni . Brad Nash (full back) and Paul Cox (rover) were Ormond's best.

De La Salle scored a 34 point win over relegation favourites Bulleen-Templestowe . Bulleen only managed2 goals for the day against a defence of Brian Hanrahan, Tim Cooke and Adrian O'Keeffe.

  • VCFL vs VAFA(Tooheys Challenge Match)

    by Ross Boot h

The VCFL defeated the VAFA at Lavington last Sunday (June 21st) by 64 points . The final scoreVCFL 18.11(119)VAFA 7.13 (55) .

The VAFA had a disastrous first half with the Country kicking the first 11 goals . Gary Kennedy (Ivanhoe) kickedthe Amateurs first goal in time-on in the second quarter and at half time the deficit of 62 points looked awesome.

In the first half the VCFL were just too god - they were physically stronger, quicker, better in the air and gener-ally more skilfull .

Where the Amateurs were able to match the Country was in commitment and determination . Whilst the sidewas unable to run the ball the way Coach Bernie Sheehy would have liked he must have been proud of theway they fought back in the second half to be outscored by just 2 points .

The VCFL gave their best to wingman Michael Garvey. He certainly played well, especially early in the gamebut I was particularly impressed with ruckman Chris Melican . He had a wonderful battle with Old Xavs '.1arkSummers who was clearly the VAFA's best . He played at CHB, in the ruck and at CHF at various stages andreally looked a class above his team-mates .

Phil Nicholson (centre) and Les Parish (ruck-rover) gave lots of drive to the Country and their key defenderswere brilliant - Brendan Dobson (FB) shut out Phil Meh rten (Ormond) and Carl Fedhe (CHB) beat severalopponents .

Nick Burne (Old Xavs) was creative both in attack and defence, Phil Kingston (Ormond) ruck-roved aggres-sively and Paul Matton (Therry) provided some zip from the back pocket .

C Section representatives performed creditably, Je remy Nichols & And rew Witts from Old Melburnians andB re tt Burden (Capt .Coach Kew) at half forward .

Mick Deveson (De La Salle) held full forward Ken Murray to 4 goals and Russell Barnes (Ormond) i :larkLowe De La Salle and Brian Hodge all performed creditably.

A brief comment on last Sunday. The Country has shown in the past three season that is would be competi-t,ve with a number of VFL Reserves Sides and would arguably prove hard to toss in matches against the de-veloping states. Our boys were simply outclassed although their second half fightback was full of character .Thanks to Bernie Sheehy and all the team and officials for their input . It wasn't our greatest season of represen-tative football and we've some hard thinking to do if we're to successfully defend the title, won so well in Adelaidein 1986, in Launceston next year.

Todays game and the run home to the finals are the main concern from now on . The match of the day willae played at Swan Street between Old Xaverians & Old Paradians . The game should be a beauty as secondspot and the important double chance are clearly at stake. I take my hat off to Old Xavs after their win last week .The conditions would not have favoured them, they had four top class players missing Peter Cu rt ain ini ., NickBurne, Mark Summers & Mike Atkins, yet they still had the depth and ability to overcome a determined NorthO.B . Great to see Bill Denton back among the better players after a spell in the Reserves . If last week wasa good test for Xavs this week will be a better one, as the record shows that the "visitors" have won the lastfive encounters. Both coaches know the opposition well and both sides have great players. I'm going for Xavsto win as they're more skilfull and have equal incentive . Their defence will wecome the return of Nick Burneand with Mark Summers back to assist Shaun Millard they have the,big men to march Old Paradians' BrianGrills & John Atta. The recruitment of young Hack from Ormond has lifted their roving and Dermot Dannis at last showing the form of which he is capable . Parade will miss Paul Considine and there is still a doubtover Dominic Spillane . They will receive plenty of drive from key defenders Dale McCann & Tony Canavanand should hold sway across the centre where Ted Flynn in particular is having a fine season . However O.P'sbiggest hurdle will be the solid Xav defence who I believe can restrict the visitors to a losing score . With nogame at the Park on Saturday this game gives yours truly a great chance to give the kids a tram ride, in viewof the parking problems, and the chance to watch what promises to be a great game.

No doubt Uni Blues go to Lower Templestowe with high hopes of a win which would lift the side clear ofCollegians in the relegation battle . However in the year of the upset I've a hunch the home side will rally andwin its second match . The Bullants previous two efforts at home have been encouraging - A six goal winover Caulfield and a narrow loss to Parade, against the Blues whose last success was back on May 16th . Asthe ground will be sloppy the "stowers" will win and add that bit more pressure to the Blues & Collegiansin the weeks ahead .

De La play Collegians at the Trott and knowing that North are still breathing down their necks for a placein the four will not slip up today. Although the conditions, apart from the centre, will allow for good football theLions have lost all confidence and are unrecognizable from the side which so clearly dominated last years com-

,' petition . Certainly the return of David Hoyle & Je remy Schmidt has been a plus, but the loss of Richard Her-man who has kicked 30% of the sides score for the year is a real blow and has really put pressure on IanRoberts, Steve Bickford and especially the Lions rover Keith Parsons & Geoff Lemon whom Collegiansmust now rely on to kick goals . As Stephen Rae has De La in far more consistent form its De La to win .

No rt h O.B . are away to Caulfield Grammarians and will be smarting not only from last weeks' loss but also"because it was Caulfield who upset their start to the 1987 season . North just cannot afford to drop this gamebecause if they do a September appearance will be out of the question . It certainly is a danger game as the"fields" have a side capable o exploiting North's weaknesses although the recent good form of Ga ry Carrolland return form of Paul Considine is a big plus for the visitors. With far more at stake its North O.B., but bewarned you're no certainties!

To Sunday where competition leaders Ormond makes its first appearance at Elsternwick Park for the sea-son against Old Scotch whose successive losses by less than a goal has virtually ended its finals chances .To have a show, it would need to upset the top side tomorrow, an event which most A Section watchers wouldnot concede. A good crowd is assured due to the `Big V' launch which may lift the Cardinals performance.

  • '141110-Certainly the return of skipper Rob Fuller and ruck rover Brian Hodge will be of far more value than the Clbut then again Ormond must be strengthened by the inclusion of the inspirational Russell Barnes, MarkMcDonald & Phil Meh rten .

Ormond's blend of youth and experience and continued pressure from its Reserves for a place in the senlo, side has the club playing great football and occupying top spot . The form of youngsters Paul Cox , AnthonyRoe, Paul Nankervis, Brad Nort h & Paul Schuhkraft is a great plus for the Club and augers well for the fo .ture. I may have left out Paul McDonald who is also enjoying a great season in the ruck and his battle + ;4,tqScotch's Duncan McCall will have a bearing on the result . Scotch has shown that its more than capable r ;kicking goals, just check its percentage, but its defence is too loose and against Ormond that will be fatal . Let shope the conditions allow for good football as both sides play attractively. However no matter how many goal-,the Cardinals score Ormond will kick more.

In B Section Parkside despite a tumble last week will regroup to beat Ivanhoe who put in a shocker . The'Hoe have now dropped two games behind those in the four and with only 8 rounds remaining has a tougr, assignment ahead both today and for the remainder of the season .

The Blacks have been the quiet improvers . They will win again today against a plucky Banyule, who arFto be commended on their two point victory over Therry . I've no doubt Banyule will survive the season althoughI have a few that the Blacks will make the final four as in recent seasons they have not won enough early gamesHowever Blacks would appear to be the best bet of the sides striving for finals honours .

Marcellin at home will account for St. Kilda as well neighbours Old Trinity over Fawkner which brings usto the match of the day between Therry & St . Bernards. Ther ry has now lost two on end and may start ques-tioning its ability and the form of some players . St . Bernal will not have the same problems especially afterits great effort against top side Parkside and even out at Oak Park I think St . Bernal youth and greatherenthusiasm will give them a most important victory .

To C Section where Old Haileybu ry simply must beat Monash to keep its slender finals hopes alive. I thoughtthe Magenta & Blacks could knock off O.M.s last week but they were never in the hunt . Things won't changetoday and its the 'Ashes for mine .

Old Brighton are off the boil and have a real battle ahead for fourth spot . Today they should return to thewinning list at the expense of Hampton Rovers who are obviously looking to the future, and pursuing a selec-tion policy of giving youth its chance . Morale is high at David Street despite the lack of wins and Old Brightonare in for a hard game . However with 4th place up for grabs I'll give the "Tonners" one last chance.

Thomastown are at home to AJAX and will be looking for a big win to improve its pecentage . They maynot find things going all their way as AJAX will be cock-a-hoop following their first win for the season last week .The return of Adam Burstin was just the tonic and his 8 goals last week was a super performance . I've nodoubt AJAX will take the game up to Thomastown but at home the Bears to win .

Melbourne High are up and down . Its hard to follow their form which is no doubt quite a concern to coachRay MacGill . Today they meet top side Kew and even at home will struggle against an in form and very settled Kew .

The remaining match is at Albert Park between Balaclava & Old Melburnians. 'Bala' are hard to toss athome and will be pumped up for this vital game. A win will see the 'Kangas' remain right in the fight for fourthspot and on the east-west oval No. 13 they have a decided home ground advantage. O.M's are slowly comingback to full strength . Ian McMullin's return last week was said to have been the difference between victoryand defeat and certainly Andrew Witts & Jeremy Nichols will improve their running game . If Ric Pisarskiis right he'll lift the forward line and with Rohan B rown returning to form I'm sticking with the Navy Blues .

To set the record straight I selected Therry last week Ross which no doubt you picked up when you readthe preview and so the B Section effort was a dismal two. A Section wasn't much better with 3 with C sectionlikewise. It must have been the weather.Todays Selections --A SECTION B SECTION C SECTIO NDe La Salle Marcellin Old MelburniansOld Xaverians Parkside KewNorth Old Boys St. Bernards MonashBulleen-Temp. REVIEW OF MATCHES PLAYED 20/6/87 ROUND 1 0

Once again that famous football axiom that wind and rain are the great levellers was to the fore last week,,~en the heavy grounds produced some unexpected results .

p SECTIO Nold Camberwell's eighty five point victory over Nort h Brunswick lifted the Two Blues into the top four. St .

Kevin's creative third quarter efforts set up their fifteen point victory over Bulleen United . St . Kevin's habitr nal quarter fade outs must be a worry to coach Alan Quaife as again their opposition came closer in th e

;st quarter than in the first three. Preston had a clear cut vicotry over Old Mentonians whose two goals werejt conducive to winning football . Elsternwick proved my judgement poor as they had a comparatively easy:ctory over Coburg who couldn't handle their home ground conditions as well as their visitors did . Old Ivan-

hoe never allowed Heathe rton into the game which enabled the home side to cruise to a sixty four point victory.

E SECTIO NOnly inaccuracy prevented Brunswick accounting for Clayton by a much wider margin than twenty two points.

.ncanny accuracy on the other hand allowed University High School Old Boys to defeat Old Geelong by.:o points despite Old Geelong having eight more scoring shots. Peninsula have offered stiff opposition to visit-lo sides in recent rounds and last week St Bede's could only win by thirteen points despite having twice as,,any scoring shots . Old Essendon proved talent can always triumph when they defeated Powerhouse byust on nine goals. Well done West Brunswick whose fifty six point victory over State Bank sent the Bankers:.iown to third place while it kept the Magpies only one game behind the fourth side . It really was a bonus victory.o West as the Bankers are normally assured of home ground victory .

F SECTIO NThis section is a promotor's dream with only percentage separating the third, fourth, fifth and sixth placeddes . Each of these clubs virtually is the master of their own destiny although the twelve sided draw could provevital ingredient of the final four. St . Andrews with a spirited second half turned their twenty two point lead

wer Commonwealth Bank into a sixty four point victory . Williamstown's forty four point margin over A.N .Z .Bank was a wide one in the prevailing match conditions . Aquinas with an eighty five point victory were largelyuntroubled to defeat St. Leonards. LaTrobe University must have believed my statement about their latenttalent, because they caused the upset of the round by defeating Doveton by three goals . Whitefriars returned,o the winning list with a huge win over Footscray Institute who were never in the game. University Reds-i,d not possess the forward strength to take the game up to Old Ca re y who ran out comfortable victors byhirty three points.

G SECTIO Ni St . Bernard did account for Marcellin but only by two points while De La Salle vindicated my judgement when

hey comfortably defeated Old Scotch by thirty five points. In the match between traditional rivals leaders Bloods:on by only eight points against their "relatives", Old Haileybu ry. Monash Whites did defeat Po rt Colts asI predicted but their margin was a mere three points . Kew comfortably accounted for Old Melburnians by thirty, our points while Colle g ians had a thirty two point victory over G.T.V.9. As these six match results were as yourtipster predicted, I had the unusual pleasure of selecting the G Section card .H SECTION.Old Geelong's eleven point victory over C.B .C. St . Kilda justified me having selected them . State Bank play-ers certainly did find Eltham College too talented as the Tu rt les won by eighty one points . St . Kevins reallyhad a day out against hapless North Old Boys when the Saints scored by ninety five points. The Old Xaveri-ans really did have a comfortable victory over Therry who failed to score a goal and went down by twentysix points. Richmond Central gave meritorious display against the strong Bulleen Templestowe side whosewinning margin was twenty one points . In the other game Old Brighton Grammarians had one of the biggestvictories of Round 10 when they thrashed Power House/Balaclava by one hundred and thrity four points . Theseresults meant I picked the Section card .

`UNDER 19 SECTION 1A thirteen point victory by University Blues over De La Salle saw the students return to the winning list . Mar-cellin received spirited opposition from Melbourne High School Old Boys and took until the third quarterto really assert their superiority. Leaders Old Xaverians crushed North Old Boys by virtually thirty goals when

  • the Xaverians kicked the highest score of Round 10 in all sections . Old Paradians Green had a comfortar,(_victory over Collegians by fifty two points although the Paradians did not produce a consistent four quaeffort, Ormond and Bulleen Templestowe played a fairly even game before the Combine ran out winner,by eighteen points .

UNDER 19 SECTION 2St . Bernards with almost absolute accuracy in goalkicking did consolidate their top rating with a forty sever, point victory over Old Melburnians . Second placed Old Scotch outscored C.B .C. St . Kilda by fifty one pointswhile Thomastown recorded their second successive victory when it accounted for Old Brighton by fifty fivepoints . University Blacks did extend leader Therry who ran out winners by eleven points whereas Banyulewent down to Old Haileybu ry by thirty six points . This result meant that the leading four sides are now a gameplus over twenty per cent ahead of the fifth side.

UNDER 19 SECTION 3Monash Blues made a mockery of my selection of Williamstownn when the Blues overwhelmed their oppo, nents to win by one hundred points . Whitefriars showed their talent (and my poor judgement) when they defeateoCaulfield Grammarians by eight points . Ivanhoe moved to equal second place on points as a result of thEjrthrity three point defeat of Hampton Rovers. Old Paradian's Purple had the bye .

    PREVIEW OF ROUND 11 JUNE 27, 1987

D SECTIO NFor North Brunswick to remain a final's threat they must defeat Old Ivanhoe today. Form this season leadsto predict Old Ivanhoe will be sufficiently talented to win the game. Old Camberwell should be talented enoughto defeat Elsternwick and thus consolidate their top four position . Leaders St. Kevins make the long journeyto Heatherton where the locals are capable of providing upset results . Nevertheless St . Kevins have earnedtheir leadership and I must select them again . Bulleen United will be anxious to atone for last week's loss andtoday they should defeat Preston . Old Mentonians after consectutive defeats should return to the winning listtoday with a big victory over Coburg .

E SECTO NBrunswick should prove strong enough to defeat Old Geelong whose early patches of form have disappoint-ed as the season has progressed . West Brunswick should encounter little difficulty in scoring a big win overClayton whose 1987 form has not been of E Section standard . Nearby University High School Old 1=~oysshould record another victory by accounting for Peninsula Old Boys for whom victory has been difficult thisseason . St . Bedes should account for Powerhouse who have not extended many teams this season . The maingame of the round will be that at Kellar between Old Essendon Grammarians and State Bank. Leadershipof the section and the double chance in the finals could well be at stake . I am not a great advocate of StateBank sides away from Albert Park and as the Keilor ground should be heavy the Bankers will experiencegreater difficulty. Both sides have focal forwards in Jenkins (State Bank) and Simmons as well as tight defences. After considered thought I select Old Essendon .

F SECTIO NPercentage as well as points will be vital in today's round . Williamstown await University Red . All form plushome ground advantage point to a big Williamstown victory. Two of the season's disappointing sides St. Leonardsand Commonwealth Bank meet at Patterson River. Without any great confidence I select CommonwealthBank because their seasonal performance is marginally better . St . Andrews play Doveton in a vital game inwhich the St . Andrews defenders must not allow latitude to Doveton forwards. Given that Doveton's form oflate has not been good and that the game is on the Brearley Reserve I select St . Andrews . Old Carey awaitsAquinas in another vital clash . The Bulleen ground will be heavy so Aquinas more than Carey could find theirsystem stymied . Nevertheless Aquinas have displayed sufficient 1987 talent to warrant selection . LaTrobe Univer-sity meet Whitefriars on the spacious University Oval . There is no doubt that the students have talent asshown last week but can Peter O'Donoghue influence them to produce consistency? Because of my doubtson this aspect plus the evidence of Whitefriar's performance I must select the Donvale based side. In a gamewhich bears no relevance to the final's surge Footscray Institute are at home to A .N .Z . Bank . Victory wouldbe sweetly savoured by both clubs as neither has experienced regular wins for the past few seasons. At homeI select Footscray.

G SECTIO NDe La Salle are at home to Old Melburnians and victory to the blue and golds is my prediction . St. Bernardsmake the long trip to Old Haileybu ry and victory should be their reward . Port Colts journey east to Marcellinwhere the conditions could mitigate against them . Form does however point to a Port Colts victory as Marcel-lin is experiencing a lean season . Kew should provide solid opposition to Bloods who have not faltered thisseason . I select Bloods to win again . Monash Whites should be able to defeat Collegians whose 1987 perfor-mances have not been up to the Students' standard . Old Scotch should be able to defeat G .T.V.9 who areone of three teams yet to record points this season .

H SECTIO NState Bank should have a big win over lowly Powerhouse/Balaclava who are languishing at the foot of theladder. St . Kevins should be able to comfortably defeat Old Geelong while C .B.C . St. Kilda should recorda victory at the expense of Therry . Old Brighton should consolidate their top four position by defeating NorthOld Boys. Old Xaverians and Bulleen Templestowe should play a spirited game from which I predict theCombine will emerge with the points . Richmond Central still with finals aspirations play leaders Old Eltham .The Turtles have done all asked of them this season and today they should take the points against Richmond .

    6 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1987

UNDER 19 SECTION 1Qe La Salle must defeat Melbourne High School Old Boys to stay in touch with the leading bracket . TheHigh School side will give spirited opposition and could cause an upset . However when viewed statisticallyn, ust select De La Salle. University Blues journey to Bulleen Templestowe who must win to stay in touchti, the leaders . Despite this requirement I believe the Blues talent will carry them to victory . Marcellin shoul d

; troubled to defeat No rt h Old Boys while the main game of the round will be played in Yarra Park betweenOtd Xaverians and Old Paradian's Green . The Paradians are confident of victory because they believe they11owed Xaverians to come from behind and win at Bundoora in round 2 . Xaverians have crushed many op-onents while the Paradians have not won by such wide margins . In what could be a Grand Final previewselect the Old Xaverians. Collegians should return to the winning list by defeating Ormond .

UNDER 19 SECTION 2Old Scotch should prove talented enough to defeat Old Melburnians while the Old Haileybu ry and St . Ber-nard's game should be a good contest . At home I favour Old Haileybu ry. Thomastown journey to St . Kilda,or what should be an interesting and close game . Visitors find victory elusive at Murrumbeena and for thiseason it is hard to select Thomastown . However successive victories will have aided Thomastown's confi-

aence and I believe their spirit will enable them to take the points today . The first and last placed sides meet"day at Brighton Beach when Therry visit Old Brighton Grammarians . I have no doubt Therry will adjusto the conditions and will win the game. Banyule travel to play University Blacks . Both sides are fairly desper-:[e for victory to stay in touch with the leading bracket and at home I select University Blacks to win narrowly.

UNDER 19 SECTION 3Caulfield Grammarians who journey to Bundoora to play Old Paradian's Purple, should be able to recorda comfortable victory. Monash journey to Ivanhoe where visiting sides often experience difficulty in winning .Today I select Ivanhoe . In the other game Whitefriars are at home to Williamstown whose form is hard to' oVlow. Whitefriars have proven themselves the leading side in the section and I select them to win again today.Hampton Rovers have the bye.

GRANDAD PLAYS HIS 50th GAME AT PARKSIDEAll at Parkside congratulate Jack 'William' Kin g

on playing his 50th game today against Ivanhoe. Jackrecruited from Alphington started at Parkside in 1985and quickly adapted to the Red Devils style of playto become a very important player for Parkside . Atthe age of 40 Jack achieved what most players dreamabout winning - The Amateurs B Grade Best &Fairest . Jack's reflexes are still sharp as many play-ers will testify. Jack is fitness coach at Parkside as wellas the Godfather and Grandad to all the players . Welldone Mate!

Whatever happened to, or how is so and so?How often are the above questions asked around amateur circles by people regarding personalities they have

not seen for some time? One such personality over the past few years has been V.A .F.A. umpire Brian "Benny" Goodman, who un-

fortunately is sidelined at the moment with a serious leg injury .

A catch cry so often heard each Saturday when referring to umpires is "Why don't you learn the rules' ; and"171 bet the buggar never played a game of football in his life":

Not so with Benny, he started his football career in the V.A .F.A . with Brunswick back in 1965 as a young rover,half-forward, winning two best and fairest awards before a shoulder injury put paid to a promising career .

Fortunately for football, Benny decided to take up umpiring in 1971 under the guidance of then advisor Ma xBarker and by round six he had control (?) of his first senior game and finished the season running the bound-ary in the semi finals .

With experience, Benny blossomed and on 29th June, 1974 he umpired his First "A" Grade game betweenReservoir Old Boys and Old Paradians, (I haven't asked Laurie Agahan how he went) but, he couldn't havebeen too bad as with 5 "A" Grand Finals, 2 "B" Grand Finals, 2 Carnival games, 11 Interstate games, 5 V.A .F.A .vs V.F.A. games, All Aus. Amateurs vx Country, and all up, a total of 340 games which we all agree is an impos-ing and very impressive achievement .

I tossed Benny the following questions, and he bounced back with -BEST PLAYER - Ian "Cuddles" Corone rBEST COACH - No answer, as he hopes to be back and he does not wish to offend any of the present daycoaches. (Typical umpires answer!)BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON HIS CAREER - Kevin McKay .BIGGEST THRILL - Many, but he will always treasure the memory of the best game of fooball he umpiredwith John Horwood, the 1985 'A ' Grade Grand Final between Ormond and De La Salle .BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT - Undoubtedly being sidelined at the present and having to undergo an opera-tion in July, August to repair the archilles injury he suffered in last years grand final .

It was probably Benny's enthusiasm, dedication and love of the game to resume this season that has orcedhim to go under the knife, but until such time, he has no been idle and he can be seen working with NevilleNash and his assistants on training nights and Saturdays passing on some helpful advice to his fellow umpires .

All the best of luck with the operation Benny, your many friends throughout the V.A .F.A . salute you and wishyou a speedy recovery and hope to see you back in actiopn again next season .

Today's game against Old Brighton sees Robe rtMelnjak play his 100th game and Andrew Huckethis 50th for Hampton Rovers. Rob first played forthe Club in 1982 and, after a couple of seasons inthe Reserves, is now a regular in the Seniors line up.Rob's team play doesn't go un-noticed and his dashesout of the backline are often a highlight . "Hucky"began his career in the Under 19s premiership yearin 1977. However, Hucky chose to give footy away topursue his love of surfing . Andrew has now decidedto give footy a go again and finally reaches his firstmilestone. Andrew's nuggety style of play is a pleas-ure to watch, and although not blessed with a greatdeal of skill, his desperation cannot be questioned .Well done fellas, the Club looks forward to many moregames from you both .

100 UP TO STEVE RHYNEHARTCongratulations from all at Doveton SJOC go

to Reserves Captain/Coach Steve Rhyneha rt onplaying his 100th game last week (June 20),"Pa" played his first season on the schoo l

ground, with a handful of reserves games, buthas stood by the Club since with a consistentsenior spot in the 1983 and 84 seasons . Lastyear Steve accepted the Coaches Cap at th e

eleventh hour and has done an excellent job ason-ield leader these last two seasons . "Pa" is auseful centre and half-back line player who hasproven worth his salt with loyalty and dedication .Pa has always made the effort, and had his heartin the job to the hilt .

With the JOC's overa!l good performances thisyear, it would be no less than this man deservesfor the Reserves team to be a successful finals

    campaigner this year.

    Umpires Cornerwith Brian Goodma n

"50" UP TO ROBERT BEL L

Robert, who is also known as "Zoom Bell" played quite a bit of football before turning to umpiring . He played15 years with Euroa in the Goulburn Valley League and 2 years with Templestowe in the Diamond Valley League .Rob decided to show a few of his friends his football photo album, it took only 1/2 a minute to see his footba!lcareer - all three photos !

Rob has certainly climbed up the umpiring ladder quite quickly, starting in 1985 and reaching "B" Sectionearly in 1987. And I believe there is no truth to the rumour that Rob will take on flag waving due to his experienceas a signalman with the Navy !

Some of Rob's highlights - Umpiring G Section Grand Final in 1986, umpiring his first "B" section game, vith Wayne Lyons this year, and seeing Wayne Lyons win most of our raffles .

Rob, who is married to Julie, his first wife, also works for Telecom or anyone, says his biggest disappointmentn his career so far is not having "4" photos in his footy album . Congratulations Rob on reaching this milestoneand on behalf of all your colleagues (Tim Be!!) we wish you every success for the future.

I would like to say how good it was to see Ross Booth learning some aspects of umpiring at ElsternwickPark last week, even it it was only "ball bouncing".

Well it took a while, but I finally got the "Axeman" to come out of hiding and give me some information .

It was great to see four girl umpires win the 1st Wet Tee Shirt Competition - Bad luck goes to Chilli Pepper(Kevin Segota) who missed out (Just) !

The Axeman tells me Round 7 produced our first T.V. show of Faulty Towers with "Basil" and "Manuel" umpir-ing together in A Grade. Who were the umpires?

    ~r~t*

Who was the rather large "injured" ex-field umpire turned observer, when asked to fill in a specimen signa-ture on a bank form, did three different ones.

,~,tr*Question : Has Ian (Blisters) Bailey found true love?

Congratulations to Came ro n Swale on being appointed to the country game, VAFA v VCFL in Lavington on21 .6.876 . Cameron who has been with the Amateurs only a couple of seasons has shown that with consistentperformances what can be achieved . Cameron we are all sure you had a wonderful time, and flew the flag forall amateur umpires.

50 GAMES AT AJA XTwo players play their 50th games this week .

Paul LeBransky started his career in 1981 andthrough many injuries it has taken him 7 years to reachthis milestone. Crusher as he is affectionately known, has played mostly in the Reserves Backline althoughthis year he played Senior football for the first time.Crusher is one of the players at the club who whenthey see the ball run straight at it and may even hurthis own team-mates .Andrew Shenker also plays his 50th game this week.

Probably the most injury prone footballer at the club,Shenks has undoubted ability since he joined theClub in 1982 . This was shown in his first senior gamein 1983 when he hicked 5 goals . His ability to readthe play and his fierce desire to win makes him a valu-able player at AJAX . As long as he stays fit he willbe in the seniors very shortly, and continue to buildan impressive career for himself. Congratulations fromall at AJAX and make your 50th games memorableas we hope to see you both at the Club for many yearsto come .
