1 Introduction
1.1 Overview
This document defines the message structure for the transmission of Recognised Air Picture
(RAP) Data between users.
This document defines the data in ASTERIX Category 204.
COMSOFT has developed this ASTERIX [R2] Category for the German Air Force (GAF) to
transmit the RAP. The ASTERIX Category has been assigned the number 204 after
consultation between GAF and EUROCONTROL.
The initial requirements for the ASTERIX Category 204 are the following:
1. Data content of the RAP as available in LINK1 [R8] format (in the interpretation for
NADGE including Mode-S extensions)
2. In addition to the Link-1 data content the following information:
a. MODE C height
b. MODE S (Callsign used in flight, height, GPS position)
c. MODE 4
d. In the future: MODE 5
3. Downward compatibility to the Link-1 format
a. A data format conversion of the RAP in the new ASTERIX category to Link-1 shall be possible
b. A data format conversion of the RAP in Link-1 to the new ASTERIX category shall be possible
This specification details the ASTERIX Category 204 implementing the above mentioned
requirements.
Alongside the requirements above the basis for the development of this ASTERIX Category
has been the draft version of the NATO ASTERIX Category 201 [R4] and for some items the
EUROCONTROL ASTERIX Category 62 [R3]. Some encodings are based on LINK-16 [R7]
standard definitions.

1.3 Definitions and Acronyms
1.3.1 Definitions
For the purposes of this Document, the following definitions shall apply:
Catalogue of Data Items:
List of all the possible Data Items of each Data Category describing the Data Items by their reference, structure, size and units (where applicable).
Data Block: Unit of information seen by the application as a discrete entity by its contents. A Data Block contains one or more Record(s) containing data of the same Category.
Data Category: Classification of the data in order to permit inter alia an easy identification.
Data Field: Physical implementation for the purpose of communication of a Data Item, it is associated with a unique Field Reference Number and is the smallest unit of transmitted information.
Data Item: The smallest unit of information in each Data Category.
Record: A collection of transmitted Data Fields of the same Category preceded by a Field Specification field, signalling the presence/absence of the various Data Fields
User
Application
Profile:
The mechanism for assigning Data Items to Data Fields, and containing all necessary information which needs to be standardised for the successful encoding and decoding of the messages.

1.4 General Principles
1.4.1 Time Management
The time-stamping shall comply with the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) as specified in
ICAO Annex 5.
1.4.2 Unused Bits in Data Items
Decoders of ASTERIX data shall never assume and rely on specific settings of spare or
unused bits. However in order to improve the readability of binary dumps of ASTERIX
records, it is recommended to set all spare bits to zero.
1.4.3 User Application Profile and Data Blocks
A single User Application Profile (UAP) is defined and shall be used for Recognised Air P
icture (RAP) messages. Data Blocks shall have the following layout:
CAT = 204 LEN FSPEC Items of the first record
FSPEC Items of the last record
where:
Data Category (CAT) = 204, is a one-octet field indicating that the Data Block contains
RAP messages;
Length Indicator (LEN) is a two-octet field indicating the total length in octets of the
Data Block, including the CAT and LEN fields;
FSPEC is the Field Specification.
1.4.4 Composition of Messages
Messages shall be composed of Data Items assembled in the order defined by the
Field Reference Number (FRN) in the associated UAP.
When sent, items shall always be transmitted in a Record with the corresponding
FSPEC Bits set to one.

A CAT 204 ASTERIX record shall only contain information of one kind (see I204/000,
Message Identification), i.e. information of different kind has to be split into different
ASTERIX records.
Although not mandatory, each CAT 204 ASTERIX record should contain I204/000 to specify
the kind of the information contained in the record.
Example: it is not allowed to transmit strobe and position information in the same CAT 204
ASTERIX record but there shall be one record with strobe information and another record
with position information.

NOTES
Exercise indicator: Only tracks with a standard identity of friend can have the exercise
indicator set to one. For any track with the exercise indicator set to value 3, Exercise Track,
data concerning the track must be considered artificial, for exercise purposes, except that the
following shall not be artificial:
a. Track number
b. Tracking data: latitude, longitude, altitude/elevation/depth, course, speed, minute,
hour and track quality
c. Simulation indicator
d. Environment/category
e. Status data on air tracks: fuel function, fuel, time report function, minute and hour
f. Status data on surface (maritime) tracks: flight deck status, landing/approach
condition and associated time report function, minute and hour.
Special interest indicator: A track's identity can be further amplified by designated it as a
track of special interest. This is accomplished by setting the identity field as appropriate and
by setting the special interest indicator.
- Examples of employment of this indicator:
- Kilo/yoke – a friendly track of special interest.
- Traveller – a suspect surface track following a recognized traffic route.
- Zombie – a suspect air track conforming to ATC rules or outside NATO airspace
following a recognized traffic pattern.
Reply expected indicator: Implementation of "operational contingency constraints" in order
not to drop a TN when a J9.0 is pending.
Context:
The item was taken over from [R4] but modified: IFF1..IFFC, FIX (indicator for field monitor
transponder) were added, EMER was extended and for all information fields the state “no
statement” was added indicating that the information is not given. This is necessary as
information for a specific target (and so the information given in I204/170) can be split into
several ASTERIX records.
