Tom Scholey ranks chopped-worm fi shing as oneof his favourite methods. He takes us to Snake Pool at Makins to explain why!

There are very few things in !shing that give me asmuch of a buzz as visitinga venue for the !rst time.The thing that I love the

most is the air of mystery. When that"oat goes under you have no idea whatis going to be on the end! I still get abit giddy when I know I am planning tovisit somewhere new.

The feeling of excitement bringsback memories of when I joined my!rst club, 10 years ago. I rememberbeing presented with a list of 10 venues– none of which I had ever seen before,being used to !shing only a coupleof local ponds. The secretary, MarkHolmes, ran my local tackle shop,and because it was only a two-minutewalk from my house, I spent many anhour picking his brains about what toexpect from the venues as each matchapproached.

He gave very good advice and nine times out of 10 he recommendedmaking chopped worm and caster themain line of attack. Although I didn’twin any matches in my inauguralseason, I did have 10 very good days’ !shing, picking up the odd sectionprize and framing place along the way.I like to think that I’ve come a longway since then, but Mark’s advice and those !rst few experiences taught me avery valuable lesson – if you are visiting a venue for the !rst time and not surewhat to expect, put your faith in worms!

I am on Snake Pool on Phase Two of the Makins complex. Although I have

!shed other lakes on here, I have neverbeen lucky enough to !sh on this one.As you may have guessed, I only havetwo baits on my side tray! A brief chatwith the bailiff tells me that the lakecontains a healthy stock of carp, aswell as a good head of silver !sh. Thissounds like it will suit my chopped-worm approach perfectly, and I can’twait to get !shing!

WHERE TO FISHI have sat on Peg 7, which gives me ahost of options, including the points oftwo islands and two very ! shy-lookingmargins. With the water being warm, Ifeel sure that !shing in shallow waterwill hold the key to both the carp andthe better silver !sh.

First, I plumb up a long swim up to the island straight in front of me.

The bottom is quite uneven here but afterspending time working along the bank, I!nd a relatively "at area tight to the bank,where I have about 18 inches of water. This is a nice depth to start in and all speciesshould feed here.

If everything goes to plan, my long-pole swim will be the bread-and-butter line,but I will also feed a shorter line down theedge. Again, I !nd the shelves to be quiteawkward, but by !shing halfway along myNo5 section I !nd an even, gentle slopewhere !sh should feed with con!dence.Because I expect to catch more silvers thancarp here, I !sh in slightly deeper water,starting in a depth of approximately twoand a half feet.

CHOPPY RIGSPresenting your bait depending on howthe !sh are responding is absolutely vitalto getting the most out of chopped worm.I always set up at least two rigs – one forif there are a lot of !sh feeding in my pegand another for when the conditions aremore dif!cult.

The more positive rig is all about gettingthe bait down to the bottom and keepingit there. It features a 0.2g Frenzee FP30with a bulk of six No10s right above the6in hooklength. You can sometimes get an awful lot of !sh in your peg with thismethod, and the key to catching themis having your bait nailed to the bottom,where they can suck it in.

When conditions are tougher it can payto switch to a lighter rig, giving your bait amore natural fall through the water. A 4x10 Preston Chianti is my choice here, with astrung bulk of four No11s spaced an inchapart above the hooklength.

The great thing about !shing wormsis that you are targeting everything that swims. Consequently, you must use tackle that allows you to land big and small !shalike. Soft elastic and a pull bung areessential and I am using 11 Hollo elastic.Both rigs are on 0.13mm Re"o Powermatched to a 0.11mm hooklength and size16 Kamasan B911 hook.

FEEDINGI mix my chopped worms and casterstogether in a bait tub before I start !shing.A pint of casters mixed with a 250ml pot ofchopped worms is a nice ratio and, whereallowed, I add two generous handfuls ofblack peat (from the sack of worms) to themix. This not only bulks it out, making itmore cost-effective, but it also creates anice !sh-attracting cloud that helps the !shto feed with con!dence.

I kick off with a medium Preston CadPot full of my mix, although, dependingon how the session pans out, it can pay toexperiment with the amount and regularityof your feed.

First drop-in, my "oat sails away and a3lb carp is hooked and netted. This is apromising sign and a couple more decent-sized !sh follow before silver !sh move in.I am not concerned because this is a veryfamiliar pattern. As long as I keep feedingregularly, I expect the carp to return and bully the silvers out later on.

Encouragingly, the stamp of silvers is quite large and with the odd 1lb-pluscrucian and skimmer showing among thesmaller roach and perch, I am having alovely day’s ! shing!

After 40 minutes without a carp, however,I decide to experiment with my feeding tosee if there is a way of bringing them backin. Firstly, I cut back the amount that I am feeding to half a Cad Pot, but after threeput-ins I have only three small silvers toshow for my efforts. The !sh clearly wantto be fed!

Next, I try the other way and put a large Cad Pot on my pole. Again, this doesn’thave the desired effect; I still catch silversbut !nd myself waiting longer for bites,

so it’s back to the medium pot. I fully expect the carp to make anappearance later in the session aslight levels drop but, as the oldsaying goes – nothing ventured,nothing gained.

Because I have been catchingquality silvers from my long-poleline, I haven’t given the margins too much attention so far. I decide to give the line !ve minutes butbecause the stamp of !sh is smallerthan expected, I waste no time ingoing back over on my main line.

There is an important point to bemade here; I don’t believe that you should ever leave a chopped-wormswim that you are catching fromfor too long. It is only by constantlykeeping bait going through thewater that you can hope to drawbetter !sh in.

Sure enough, the carp eventuallymuscle back in. From this pointforward, it is pretty much a carp every put-in, with 10 !sh between 2lband 4lb in the !nal hour.

When I pull my nets out there’smore than expected; roughly 65lbmade up of about 40lb of carp and25lb of silvers. My nets includeroach, perch, gudgeon, skimmers,crucians, rudd and carp – proof ofhow effective a ‘catch-everything’ chopped-worm approach can be!
