Cataract Surgery

What is Cataract Surgery

Our eyes are blessed with a natural lens that allows light to enter into the eye and enables us to see the world. Cataract is a condition in which the natural lens becomes clouded and does not allow you to see things around you. This can lead to partial or complete blindness. Cataracts are majorly age related and can also happen as a result of exposure to UV radiations. The surgery aims at removing the natural lens of the eye and replacing it with an artificial manmade lens. The condition is usually treatable and surgery shows promising results in almost all of the cases.

Your Doctor needs to perform a thorough eye examination to check for any type of complications or anything that needs attention. Your doctor will decide upon the power of the lens that needs to be used for the implant. You might be asked to stop certain medications before the surgery. You doctor might prescribe you certain eye drops of antibiotics to help minimize the risk of infections.

Before the Procedure

How it is performed

How It Is Performed

To perform the procedure your Doctor will put drops in your eyes for dilating your pupil. Your eye will be washed with medicated solutions and will be cleansed. Your doctor will give you a local anaesthesia, and sedatives if required. Depending on your condition the doctor might opt for the way the surgery will be performed.

How It Is Performed - Continued

The Doctor will make three small incisions around cornea (dark colored circle of your eye). The openings are used to introduce the required instruments in the eye. An ultrasound based technique is used to break and dissolve the natural lens of the eye. The dissolved lens is then sucked out completely without leaving any debris behind. After the dissolved lens has been removed, your doctor will insert the custom made artificial lens (intraocular lens) which could be made of plastic or silicon.

Recovery

The surgery is usually a day care procedure and the patient is allowed to go home the same day after observation for things like bleeding etc. There is good recovery of vision and often there is no need to put on glasses. Initially you might feel irritation with high intensity lights so it is not advisable to start activities like driving and working on computers or smart phones immediately. You can take the help of dark colored glasses to minimize the amount of light entering your eyes. You will have to continue with eye drops and other medication if prescribed to keep yourself guarded against infections and irritation.

Potential Risks

The major risk involved in performing the procedure is damage to the inner eye. The damage can be small or severe. The risk has been majorly eliminated because of more sophisticated machines and technologies being used these days for removing the lens from the eye. The success rate of the surgery is around 99%.
