GENERAL INFORMATION

Metal-clad switchgear «Volga» is designed for 50 Hz three-phase AC electric power distribution with nominal voltage 6(10) kV.

Metal-clad switchgear «Volga» casing is made of galvanized steel, divided into cabi-nets with earthed metal membranes possessing an enhanced mechanical strength.

Metal-clad switchgear «Volga» is equipped with cartridge draw-out elements, vacu-um circuit breaker and a bus-bar system with air insulation.

APPLICATION

Metal-clad switchgear «Volga» is used both at the primary and secondary power dis-tribution levels of electricity nets. Metal-clad switchgear «Volga» are used by power generating and grid companies, industrial enterprises and infrastructure facilities.

REQUIEREMENTS

Metal-clad switchgear «Volga» is designed for indoors installation at the following ambient conditions:

sea level elevation – up to 1,000 m;

the ambient air upper working temperature value – not higher than +40 °С;

the ambient air lower working temperature value – not lower than –25 °С;

relative air humidity – not more than 80% at +15 °С. atmosphere type – II as per State Standard (GOST) 15150-69;

environment – non-explosive, not containing conductible dust, aggressive va-pors and gases which are detrimental for insulation and metal.

The edge-cutting trends in the metal-clad switchgear construc-tion world were taken into account in the process of «Volga” metal-clad switchgear development. A special focus was kept on providing high safety and reliability levels, serviceability of the equipment and design and technological solutions’ com-mercial efficiency.

HIGH RELIABILITY• A metal casing made of corrosion-resistant galvanized steel

is capable of withstanding excess pressure loads at internal arcing short-circuits.

• Functional cabinets (of the draw-out element, cable junc-tions, bus-bar and secondary control wiring circuits) are divided with metal membranes.

• Separate overpressure relief valves are provided for each high-voltage cabinet in case of internal arcing short-cir-cuits.

• Laying of secondary control wiring circuits in high-voltage cabinets is performed in metal cable ducts. Collecting bus cabinets of neighboring cubicles are divided with metal membranes equipped with wall tube insulators. High reli-ability switching units are employed: vacuum circuit break-ers and earthing connectors.

• Each cubicle is subject to factory commissioning tests in compliance with the IEC.

HIGH RELIABILITY• The procedure of access to high-voltage cabinets is deter-

mined by locks.• Steel shutters block the access to fixed power contacts in

control or service positions of the draw-out element.• Arc-resistant doors are closed with multiple-point lock. Vi-

sual active mnemonic diagram explicitly shows the position of the switching devices of the main circuit.

• All the routine switchings of the main circuits are possible at high-voltage cabinets’ closed doors only.

• A system of in-built mechanical locks prevents wrong ac-tions of the maintenance staff.

• All locks are performed in compliance with IEC.• The personnel protection against short circuits is provided

by the system of independent pressure release valves located on the cubicle’s roof.

• Voltage display module allows to control voltage availabil-ity/absence and to perform low voltage cable phasing.

SERVICEABILITY• A possibility to perform maintenance works with circuit

breaker and to carry out high-voltage cable tests without voltage removal from bus-bar is realized in the draw-out el-ement cabinet.

• The cable junction cabinet is made having a separate door. Due to connecting buses frontal location and high draw-off point, the most optimal conditions for installation and cable junction maintenance are ensured.

• The possibility of technical maintenance and routine switching from the metal-clad switchgear front side.

• Vacuum circuit breakers do not require servicing.• Current transformers possess long connection terminals and

do not require periodic inspection and the secondary cur-rent circuits' bolts tightening in the high-voltage cabinet. The work with current circuits shall be performed in relay cabinet only.

• The cable voltage availability is monitored with voltage dis-play module.

COMMERCIAL EFFICIENCY• Availability of Russian-origin components ensures the opti-

mal price-quality ratio.• Modules manufacturing at independent technological lines

reduces time and cost for metal-clad switchgear «Volga» production.

• Module design ensures prompt components' replacement thus shortening the preventative maintenance and repair time in contingency situations.

• The possibility of selective shutdown in case of internal arc emergence ensures minimal losses in contingency situ-ations.

• Availability of steel structure Zn-Al coating prevents stain-ing process and necessity in periodic tinting of structural elements.

• Small front dimensions facilitate effective use of the new substations' interior space, allow modernization of existing substations without increasing in space required.

Metal-clad switchgear «Volga» has been developed for universal use and possibility of one- and two-side access.

The draw-out element cabinet is a metal casing with front door, which is closed with multiple-point lock. The door arc-resistant design prevents the arc com-bustion products emission in case of short circuit.

Excessive pressure discharge is per-formed via the valve located in the cabi-net's upper part.

Six insulators are mounted on the cabi-net back wall with internal fixed con-tacts.

The earthing switch is located under the insulators outside the cabinet.

Metal shutters of the shutter mechanism in cubicles up to 1600 A, starting with 2000 A and up to 3150 A – plastic ones. They close access to the fixed contacts automatically, relocating vertically sub-ject to the levers system when moving the draw-out element from working po-sition to control one. To ensure Metal-clad switchgear «Volga» safe mainte-nance, the shutters can be closed with a padlock.

Door can’t be opened before the draw-out element is not into control position.

Metal-clad switchgear «Volga» can be equipped with all types of the draw-out elements needed for operation.

Different equipment could be installed on chassis truck depending on the metal-clad switchgear scheme:– vacuum circuit breaker;– voltage transformers;– safety fuses;– bus-bar bridge;– terminals for high voltage cables test-

ing;

The draw-out elements can take the fol-lowing fixed positions:– working, at which main and auxiliary

circuits are closed;– control, at which main circuits are

opened, while the auxiliary ones – closed;

– service, at which main and auxiliary circuits are opened, while the draw-out mechanism is outside metal-clad switchgear «Volga». Installation, re-moval and relocation of the draw-out element in the service position is performed on a special service trolley, which is supplied as part of metal-clad switchgear «Volga» package.

Optionally, the draw-out element can be complete with motorized chassis truck allowing performing relocation of the draw-out element in control and working position distantly.

The secondary control wiring circuit cab-inet dimensions (width – 650, 800, 1000 mm; height – 550 mm; depth – 400 mm) allow to use different digital devices of relay protection, control, automation and power consumption accountabil-ity devices, digital converters, arc flash protection fiber-optic devices, terminal rows and other equipment of the second-ary control wiring circuits.

The following items are mounted on the cabinet doors: – control switches;– fault indicator and tripping event

lights;– electrical measuring instruments;– display and control modules of relay

protection microprocessor devices.

To protect from the environmental ef-fects, anti-condensation heating ele-ment automatically controlled by ther-mostat is installed in the cabinet.

For convenience of maintenance activi-ties, LED lighting is provided for in the cabinet.

The cable junction cabinet houses zero-phase sequence current transformers, overvoltage arresters, base insulators with in-built condenser, heating element and, optionally, draw-out truck-based voltage transformers. The cabinet back wall is demountable one consisting of two boards: upper and lower.

On the front side of the cabinet there is the arc-resistant door closed with multi-ple-point lock.

The pressure of excessive gases gener-ated at short-circuit through an arc, is relived through the valve located in the metal-clad switchgear «Volga» upper part.

The cabinet is designed for connection of three three-core cables with cross-section up to 240 mm or six one-core cables with cross-section up to 630 mm.

Mechanical blocking is provided for preventing door opening until earthing switch is set into «ON» position.

The bus-bar system is located in the cabi-net. To reduce the electric-field strength, the buses are made without sharp edges, having rounded 5 mm diameter facets.

Bus-bar for currents up to 1600 A are performed as a copper strip with cross-section 10х80 mm, for currents up to 2500 A – as two strips, for currents up to 3150 A – as three strips.

The fastenings package, installation method and bolted-on connections' tightening torque ensure contact pres-sure continuity at the bus entire heating range in working and emergency modes.

Excessive pressure generated at arcing short-circuits is relieved through the valve located in the cabinet upper part.

A system of mechanical locks fully complying with all safety requirements IEC.

Metal-clad switchgear «Volga» can be com-plete with different vacuum circuit breakers available at the market: VF12, SION, EVOLIS, ISM15.

As far as value for money is concerned, vacuum circuit breaker VF12 is deemed to be optimal.

VF12 vacuum circuit breaker's specific design feature is pouring vacuum arc-quenching chamber with epoxide compound, which en-hances switch poles electrical strength reli-ably protecting arc-quenching chambers from environmental effects: impacts, dust and moisture.

The breaker is equipped with spring drive with gear motor combining possibility of manual operation.

Vacuum circuit breaker VF12 is equipped with mechanical energy-storage spring drive. The drive can be charged either manually or with gear motor.

Vacuum circuit breaker VF12 can be switched on and off manually with buttons located on the drive front side or distantly with closing and trip-ping electromagnets.

The earthing switch movable contacts can be in two mutually transverse positions: On or Off. The movable contacts stable state in the positions indicated is ensured by two springs. The same springs provide the necessary effort, speed and the earthing switching simultane-ity, independent of the torque and control shaft rotation speed.

The earthing switch is complete with manual operation drive.

Optionally, the earthing switch can be com-plete with motorized drive allowing distantly transferring the earthing switch into ON/OFF position.

Current transformers of different design can be installed in Metal-clad switchgear «Volga» 6 (10) kV.

To enhance reliability, maintenance safety and operational costs reduction, long connection terminals transformers are used. Such current transformers the secondary circuits do not have screw connections in high voltage cabinet.

Any relay protection devices can be installed in metal-clad switch-gear «Volga». The use of microprocessor relay protection blocks

and automatic equipment allows to realize following:– all necessary types of junctions protection 6(10) kV;– measured values indication on the in-built display;– data storage;– emergency parameters registering and storage;– local network protection setting and settings change;– inclusion of relay protection blocks into automatic process con-

trol system;– distant operation of switching unit via local networks;– relay protection blocks diagnostics followed by malfunction

For widely used relay protection devices series – SEPAM, SPAC, SIR-IUS and BE2502 secondary control wiring circuits' typical circuits have been developed.

Fiber-optic arc protection is provided for by generic solution of metal-clad switchgear «Volga» cubicle design. The fiber-optic arc protection tripping time does not exceed 8 ms at arc minimal cur-rent 160 A.

Arc protection can operate according to algorithm ensuring both, selective and non-selective tripping when electric arc emerges.

Valve arc protection responds to the arc effects – gases pressure value sufficient for tripping. Time for the valve tripping is from 5 to 70 ms.

Metal-clad switchgear «Volga» is complete with limit switches to ensure the valve arc protection.

Metal-clad switchgear «Volga» does not require any special maintenance, except for periodical examination and dust removal from conductive parts (when necessary).

Metal-clad switchgear «Volga» bus-bar system does not require service.
