When it comes to accessory product design we are in an enviable position at Preston Innovations. Not only do many of the employees fish (even the boss is an angler), some at the highest level, we also have a large group of consultants spread throughout the country. This network of anglers really does have its finger on the pulse when it comes to the latest methods and the constant feedback we get enables us to design products that will help you catch more fish, or at the very least make your fishing easier and more enjoyable.Of course knowing what is happening in the match world isn’t the complete story, it’s just the start. A Major ImprovementA classic example is one of this year’s major products, the Quick Release Method Feeder Mould. “Whatever your preference, Preston have an elastic to suit your style of fishing56 57

SLiP NAtUrAL LAteX eLASticAvailable in 8 sizes, we have graded this high quality pure latex in both diameter and traditional numbers to enable the angler to make an informed comparison.Supplied on five metre spools, this elastic has a super smooth surface and consistent stretch, allowing it to flow smoothly from your pole tip to give the ultimate performance and reducing the number of lost fish.

Available in numbers: 4 · 5 · 6 · 8 · 10 · 12 · 14 · 16

FLUoro SLiP eLASticFluoro Slip Elastic is produced from pure latex combined with special fluorescent pigments that do not affect its strength or performance. Fluoro Slip Elastic available in 10 strengths, now on five metre spools.

Available in sizes: 2 · 3 · 4 · 5 · 6 · 8 · 10 · 12 · 14 · 16

Since our entrance into the world of pole elastics, back in the late 1980s, Preston Innovations have always strived to give you the best shock absorption systems for playing fish on the pole. In fact we were the first company to colour elastics and the Slip Original still has many thousands of followers over 25 years on.

Which Elastic Is Best For You?Everyone is different when it comes to elastic choice. With the increase in match carp fishing on the pole and the introduction of hollow elastics a few years ago anglers have been split as to what is best. Hollow elastics have different characteristics to solid versions and tend to bottom out more slowly. Solid elastics are thinner for their given strength and run through a PTFE bush more freely. Some anglers are now using a double strand of lighter solid elastic as they claim it stretches more easily under lower pressure. The principle is that you double up a number 5 elastic if you want the

same power as a 10. So which should you choose? The answer is all of them! At least you should try all of the options and then choose the one that suits your fish-playing style best. At Preston we have one of the largest group of consultants in match fishing and even they are divided as to which choice of elastic is best!

The Four ChoicesPreston have four different choices of elastic. Hollo is a high performance hollow elastic that is slightly different from many. The walls are slightly thicker, whilst the overall diameter is slightly less than some hollow elastics. The reason for this is that whilst it still performs perfectly the

origiNAL SLiP eLASticSlip Elastic was the first colour coded elastic available and is still incredibly popular with anglers. Pre-treated with Preston Slip lubricant to give outstanding abrasion resistance and reliability it is available in 5 metre lengths from ultra fine size 1 up to a powerful 16.

tHe comPLete SyStemIf you look at the new Preston Elastication packaging you will find some small

changes. Bushes now have the diameter printed on them, so you can choose the exact size you want by measuring the end of your pole. Our connectors are now also available in a wide range of colours. This enables you to choose the correct colour of connector to match the bush and colour code your top kits for easy identification.

walls don’t collapse down and stick together under pressure. This gives consistent performance that you can trust at all times. For solid elastic fans there’s three options. The Original Slip is a surface coloured elastic that has been around for over 25 years. Available in sizes from 1 through to 16 it is pretreated with Slip lubricant, lasts very well and is a firm favourite for thousands of anglers. If you prefer bright elastics then look no further than the Fluoro Slip. Made from pure latex, with a fluorescent pigment added, the colours are bright and easy to see when playing fish. The latest addition to the range is Slip Natural Latex. This is made from pure latex without any additions and is a pale cream colour. Available on 5 metre spools, we rate this elastic by number, that corresponds with the normal strength scale, and also by diameter. Since its launch it has been very popular with some of the UK’s best match anglers and lasts a long time.

Bungs, Bushes and ConnectorsOf course elastication isn’t just about elastic, it’s about the whole system and Preston offer a wide range of bungs, bushes and connectors. Our two most popular bungs are the Stora Bung and the Pulla Bung. The Stora has a built-in winder that holds additional elastic. The Pulla Bung enables you to tighten the elastic whilst playing the fish. All Preston bushes are made from PTFE that has minimal friction. We make internal and external bushes in all sizes to suit everything from fine tips up to thick tips (even if you remove the number one section).Connectors also come in a wide range of sizes to suit all sizes of elastic. Bushes and connectors are available in a range of colours to enable you to colour code your top kits. To finish off the Preston Elastication range there is an extra long Diamond Eye Threader and Slip Lubricant that keeps your elastic running freely and also increases its longevity.

For all your elastication needs,

Preston Innovations have got it all.

Whether you prefer solid or hollow

elastic you can be sure that Preston is

the best there is.From the Original Slip colour-coded elastic through to

the latest Hollo range, there’s

something to suit your preference.

There is also a huge selection of

elastication - Bushes and connectorsmake sure your elastic works properly

elasticating A top Kit

To play carp correctly, with large diameter elastics over size 10, or Hollo, you need to cut your pole tip back (sometimes quite a lot) or remove the number 1 section completely. Whichever you choose to do you must make sure the tip doesn’t bend too much. If it does the elastic will stick to the inside of the top section and not work properly. How far you cut back the tip may determine which type of bush you can fit. If you cut it back a long way to make it ultra stiff, the internal diameter of the tip may be too large to fit a standard internal bush. In this case use an XLarge Internal Bush or a Slip Stretch external bush. Many top anglers remove the number one section and fit an internal or external Stretch Slip Bush straight onto their number 2 section. This produces an ultra stiff tip and guarantees smooth elastic performance.

Cut back your pole tip to match the size of the bush using a fine tooter blade. Use sandpaper to remove any sharp edges.

Check that the bush fits snugly and then smear a small amount of Araldite onto the outside of the bush and push in.

Tie on your connector using an overhand loop. First thread the elastic through the sleeve and the hole in the connector...

... double over the elastic and tie the overhand loop. Moisten the elastic and gently tighten the knot down to the connector.

Thread the elastic through your top kit and attach to a Stora bung. Adjust the tension by winding elastic onto the built-in winder.

Here’s how to elasticate your top kit using an internal bush and Stora Bung.

PULLA BUNgManufactured from lightweight plastic the Pulla Bung enables you to pull your elastic tighter after unshipping your top kit. The advantage is that you can use lighter elastics for small carp, but tighten it for netting if you hook a bonus fish. This means you don’t need to play and net big carp on top 5s or 6s, which leads to better control, faster netting and less pole breakages.

StorA BUNgSMidi Stora Bungs are designed to fit most number 2 sections whilst the larger Maxi Stora Bungs fit most number 3 sections or power number 2 kits. Both can be easily cut back to suit different diameter top kit sections. Both lightweight bungs feature a winder that holds spare elastic making adjustment of elastic tension quick and easy.

Available in pairs and singles with an extractor rod, additional extractor rods are now also available in packs of two.

megA StorA BUNgDesigned to be used with Hollo elastics or heavy solid elastic the Mega Stora Bung features a large winder which allows adjustments to be made by simply removing the bung and winding elastic on, or off, the bung winder.Manufactured from lightweight plastic, the Mega Stora Bung can be easily cut to fit most top kits by following score lines around the coned part.

Available in either a mega Stora Bung twin pack or as a single bung with an extractor rod.

QUicK SLiP BUNgSThe Quick Slip Bung comprises a robust, very lightweight bung and a detachable metal extractor rod that works on a simple hook principle. Once in position, the bung does not hinder the putting together of pole sections. To remove simply locate the extractor rod into the bung and remove the bung.

Available in both midi and Big sizes to suit sections 1, 2, 3 and 4.

diAmoNd eye tHreAderDesigned with a diamond shaped eye that grips the elastic, the Preston Threader is available in an extra long length (2.1m) for long top twos.

SLiP LUBricANtSlip Elastic Lubricant is the perfect lubricant for all Preston pole elastics. The thin liquid adheres to the elastic to form an ultra fine film that ensures smooth elastic performance.

Available in 14ml and 50ml bottles

Fitting a Pulla bung

Using a Pulla bung

The Pulla Bung needs to fit closely to the end of the section so that the tube sticks out. First push it in as far as it will go.

Keep your nail on the bung and take it out. Mark where this is. It is important that you are accurate.

Cut through the bung one rib bigger than you think you need. You can then trim one rib at a time to achieve a perfect fit.

Attach your connector to the other end of the elastic (see page 58) and thread the elastic through the top kit and Pulla Bung.

Thread the elastic through the base sleeve and tie a knot. If you need more tension push the sleeve up and tie another knot.

The Preston Pulla Bung is a brilliant way of landing hard-fighting fish more quickly than on a conventional elastic set-up. This is especially true for bonus fish that are bigger than expected. The first thing to say is that you still play the fish as you would normally, it’s only when you unship your top kit that the Pulla Bung really comes into play. From that moment on, you have the option of increasing the tension on the elastic by pulling some of it through the bung and holding it in the fingers of the hand holding the pole. By pulling some of the elastic through the bung you shorten the length of elastic still in the top kit. This reduces the distance the fish can swim away from you and makes netting much easier. But it isn’t just playing bonus fish quickly that makes the Pulla Bung so useful. You can also reduce the strength of your elastic slightly, or set it with less tension, which leads to less bumped fish, especially when fishing up in the water. Most of Preston’s consultants reduce the strength of their elastic by one size. Instead of

a number 12 solid elastic they use a number 10. For Hollo instead of a size 13 they reduce the elastic to a size 11.

Great For HolloThe Pulla Bung is also brilliant for Hollo elastics because they are usually more easily stretched and being able to shorten the amount available beats fish really quickly. Still not convinced? The next time you hook a bigger than expected fish and are trying to net it on a top 4 or 5, think about how easy it would be if you had a top 2 in your hand with less elastic stretching out!

Fitting a Pulla Bung is simple and easy to do. In fact if you normally elasticate your top kits you’ll be able to fit a Pulla Bung.

”“Stora Bungs enable you to store spare elastic on the built-in winder.

A WorLd oF cHoicePole Floats

”“Body shape makes a big difference to how a float performs. On stillwaters shape isn’t so important, but on moving water it is essential that you have the correct shaped body.

Preston Innovations have a well-deserved reputation for designing some of the very best pole floats in the world. The hugely popular Bazzerla, Durafloats, Colours, Magic and new Inter Series all have one thing in common, they are designed in the UK and finished to perfection. The diversity of methods and venues in the UK dictate that a wide choice of pole floats is essential to cover all situations and conditions. To fulfil this Preston Innovations produce five different pole float ranges. These are PB

(Bazzerla), Colours, Durafloats, Magic (designed in conjunction with our Dutch consultants for fishing still and slow moving waters) and the new Inter Series (designed in conjunction with Des Shipp). Each range has a specific ‘character’.

The Inter Series, for instance, are a range of float shapes that have been proven over and over again to be popular with the very best match anglers.Durafloats have evolved as a result of the popularity of commercial waters and the very specific methods used.

Designed to withstand the abuse of catching lots of fish, big fish, fishing close to weeds, and big bait requirements, Durafloats are a prime example of how much thought and development Preston Innovations puts into designing products.Preston PBs are the mainstay of the pole float

range and cover a huge range of fishing styles and situations. Within the range you’ll find a lot of floats that suit your requirements. Although most anglers think of the PB range as being a ‘silver fish’ range there are models that are very popular with anglers fishing commercial waters. The Colours range all have carbon stems and are specifically designed for modern match methods. These floats have been so popular since their launch that we have already designed a range of pre-tied rigs using the complete range. Magic Series floats are geared towards traditional

match fishing where larger floats are required. Finished in coloured lacquers with long tips and stems for stability. These floats will find favour with anglers who fish slow moving deep rivers and stillwaters.

How to choose the correct FloatFloat choice is a personal thing which explains why there are so many patterns. However, there are a few rules that you should follow. Body shape makes a big difference to how a float performs. On stillwaters shape isn’t so important, but on moving water it is essential that you have the correct shaped body. The explanations on the far left will help you understand the uses of different body shape. With regard to construction, all Preston floats have bodies made from high grade balsa. Tips are either plastic, cane or fibre depending on the ideal use for the float. The rule to follow is the thinner the tip the more sensitive it is. As for stems, wire is more stable than carbon, which makes them suitable for moving water, deep swims and fine fishing. The downside of wire is that it can get bent and floats with wire stems are more prone to tangling. Carbon stems are lighter, don’t bend and offer better presentation when fishing on the drop.

SLim ProFiLeSlim bodies are usually found on smaller floats designed for on-the-drop fishing as they turn slowly and follow the line of the bait. A good shape for fine canal fishing where there is little tow and the bait needs to be lifted and worked.

ovAL ProFiLeOval shaped bodies are the most versatile shape and can be used in lots of different conditions. They are very stable and can be held still in medium and fast flows, lifted to work the bait and turn around the body when fishing on-the-drop.

Body doWN ProFiLeVery stable floats for stillwater and slow moving water fishing, especially in rough conditions. Depending on the size of tip and body taper this shape of float can be used for fine bloodworm fishing or for carp fishing on-the-deck.

Pole Floatsinter Series

Prestoncolours

Designed in conjunction with England International Des Shipp, the PB Inter Series is a collection of some of his favourite patterns. With a distinctive paint finish and high quality carbon and steel stems, all nylon tips are painted to make them glow brightly when light shines through them.

The Colours range is a very specific

range of floats designed for top match anglers.

All models have either a thin, but

strong, carbon stem or fine

wire for finesse situations and

increased stability. Tips are of a

sensible thickness for the design and

size of float.

modern Floats For modern methods As you would expect, Preston Innovations produce a high quality range of floats to cover almost all situations, from splasher waggler fishing on big carp waters to stickfloat fishing on rivers, and just about everything in between, especially modern methods now found on the match scene throughout the country. With the increasing popularity of waggler pellet fishing we now have two versions - the original Pellet Waggler and a new Poly Waggler that has a body made from a special lightweight (and very buoyant) foam. Both of these floats are unloaded. The reason for this is that most pellet waggler fishing is done at shallow depths and loaded floats dive under the surface too far on the cast. Also, if you are fishing a pellet at full depth, you want some shot down the line to stabilise the hookbait. If you’re worried about putting lots of shot onto the line to lock them in position, don’t be. Take a look at page 79 and you’ll see we do Jumbo Locking Shot especially for the job.New for this year is the Splasher Waggler. Designed for carp waters, our version of the splasher has a bulbous second body at the tip. This reduces the depth that the float dives to on the cast and also improves accuracy as it acts as a stabiliser in the air. It also makes a big splash which, afterall, is the whole object of the method.

LoAded dUmPy PeLLet WAggLerS Made with a dumpy body to create a splash and to help stop the float diving. The thick tip is easy to see and prevents the float diving under from false bites and line bites.

SPLASHer WAggLerS Correctly loaded, these new Splasher Wagglers have a double body design that prevents the float diving too deep on the cast and increases the splash when it lands. A polycarbonate stem provides the strength required when casting continually.

running Line Floats

To fishing off the ‘commercial’ water range we still have the three ‘dumpy’ wagglers that are perfect for small carp match venues.

Silver Fish RangeThe silver fish range now comprises just four styles, yet covers a huge number of options and methods. The wagglers are made from peacock quill and are available in a standard diameter and also a thick version for running water. The stickfloats are available in a domed and shouldered version, both with alloy stems for less resistance when holding back.

Big FLoAt WAggLer AdAPtorSDesigned for use with loaded splasher wagglers where locking shot aren’t required. The larger size of this version has a metal stem and copes well with repeated casting.
