INTRODUCTION This is the second contribution towards an inventory of all the type fossils stored in the Palaeontological Museum of “La Sapienza” University of Rome. The types are all refigured here. For each type the main data are given and subsequent designations are not reported. COLLECTIONS Three are the main type-bearing collections here considered: AGIP, Almera and Cerio collections. The AGIP collection is constituted by about eighty echinoid specimens, found in Bathonian, Cenomanian and Eocene sediments of Somalia and Ethiopia. This material was studied by Checchia-Rispoli (1943, 1945, 1950) and Maccagno (1941, 1946, 1947). AGIP is the acronym of “Azienda Generale Italiana Petroli” (= General Italian Company of Petroleum). The researchers of this company, directed by prof. C. Migliorini, worked in the African colonies of Italy between the years 1936- 1938 for petroleum research. The Almera collection stored in the Rome paleonto- logical Museum is constituted by forty specimens of Cretaceous corals found in Catalonia (Spain). This mate- rial was studied by De Angelis d’Ossat (1905b). Jaume Almera (1845-1919) was priest, professor of geology and natural history in the Seminario Conciliar de Barcelona. In the year 1874 he founded the “Museo de Geognosia y Paleontología del Seminario de Barcelona”. Besides he became president of the “Real Academia de Ciencias y Artes de Barcelona” in 1907. The Cerio collection is constituted by a dozen of Cretaceous coral specimens found near Venassino, in the Capri island. These corals were studied by De Angelis d’Ossat (1905a). Ignazio Cerio (1841-1921) was an eclectic personage: physician, scientist and archaeo- logist. He lived at Capri for fifty years, collecting shells, fossils, minerals, plants and animals. THE CATALOGUE ORGANISATION This catalogue is taxonomically organised: within each mayor grouping, the taxa are listed by alphabetic order. For each type there are eight records: Record 1 - genus and species name, followed by the name of author(s) and year of institution of the species; Record 2 - inventory number of MPUR (Museo Pale- ontologia Università Roma). The inventory numbers are prefixed i. (invertebrate), ve. (vertebrate) and vg. (plant); Record 3 - name of the collection; Record 4 - kind of type: holotype or syntype or lecto- type; Record 5 - stratigraphic distribution Record 6 - geographic distribution (country, region, locality). For Italian localities the initials of the province name are put between brackets, after the type locality name; Record 7 - original bibliographic reference, with the number of the illustration of the type specimen; Record 8 - remarks. INTRODUCTION

This is the second contribution towards an inventory ofall the type fossils stored in the PalaeontologicalMuseum of “La Sapienza” University of Rome. Thetypes are all refigured here. For each type the main dataare given and subsequent designations are not reported.

COLLECTIONS

Three are the main type-bearing collections hereconsidered: AGIP, Almera and Cerio collections.

The AGIP collection is constituted by about eightyechinoid specimens, found in Bathonian, Cenomanianand Eocene sediments of Somalia and Ethiopia. Thismaterial was studied by Checchia-Rispoli (1943, 1945,1950) and Maccagno (1941, 1946, 1947). AGIP is theacronym of “Azienda Generale Italiana Petroli” (=General Italian Company of Petroleum). The researchersof this company, directed by prof. C. Migliorini, workedin the African colonies of Italy between the years 1936-1938 for petroleum research.

The Almera collection stored in the Rome paleonto-logical Museum is constituted by forty specimens ofCretaceous corals found in Catalonia (Spain). This mate-rial was studied by De Angelis d’Ossat (1905b). JaumeAlmera (1845-1919) was priest, professor of geologyand natural history in the Seminario Conciliar deBarcelona. In the year 1874 he founded the “Museo deGeognosia y Paleontología del Seminario de Barcelona”.Besides he became president of the “Real Academia deCiencias y Artes de Barcelona” in 1907.

The Cerio collection is constituted by a dozen ofCretaceous coral specimens found near Venassino, in theCapri island. These corals were studied by De Angelisd’Ossat (1905a). Ignazio Cerio (1841-1921) was aneclectic personage: physician, scientist and archaeo-logist. He lived at Capri for fifty years, collecting shells,fossils, minerals, plants and animals.

THE CATALOGUE ORGANISATION

This catalogue is taxonomically organised: withineach mayor grouping, the taxa are listed by alphabeticorder.

For each type there are eight records:Record 1 - genus and species name, followed by the

name of author(s) and year of institution of the species;Record 2 - inventory number of MPUR (Museo Pale-

ontologia Università Roma). The inventory numbers areprefixed i. (invertebrate), ve. (vertebrate) and vg. (plant);

Record 3 - name of the collection;Record 4 - kind of type: holotype or syntype or lecto-

type;Record 5 - stratigraphic distributionRecord 6 - geographic distribution (country, region,

locality). For Italian localities the initials of the provincename are put between brackets, after the type localityname;

Record 7 - original bibliographic reference, with thenumber of the illustration of the type specimen;

Record 8 - remarks.

The types

All the specimens utilized for describing a new speciesare named types. In particular the holotype is thespecimen, chosen by the author, to represent a newspecies. The remaining specimens of that new speciesare identified as paratypes. The type nomenclature isregulated by the ICZN (International Code of ZoologicalNomenclature) (1999).

If the holotype was not designed, all the specimensexamined to describe a new species are syntypes. Amongthe syntypes, a later author may choose a lectotype. Inthis case the remaining syntypes are named paralecto-types.
