INTRODUCTION Since 2007, the Scientific and Technical Department has been working towards enhancing the status of its knowledge and technical skills through the publication of reference documents. A visual identity was created1, and an editorial policy defined that was then adopted at the international level, which resulted in a sharp increase in the number of documents published. Over a three-year period more than 28 publications were issued in French, English and/or Spanish and disseminated both in-house and outside ACF (donors, partners, universities,...). Most of these documents can be accessed on ACF’s websites. The link indicated in this document is usually that of ACF-France. The Network’s other sites can also be consulted:

Today, coherence, visibility and the promotion of technical skills and know-how have been very much improved. In parallel, Action contre la Faim has at its disposal a large documentary base that contains a wide range of reports, summaries, position papers and so on, not all of which are intended for publication. Amongst these latter for example is the recently created international newsletter “Tech the News!”, drafted and edited by the field and coordinated at Headquarters level. ACF’s technical teams also regularly contribute to the publications prepared by Hunger Watch2. Numerous and varied technical documents have been compiled on CDs, DVDs and self-training modules. In this Catalogue of Scientific and Technical publications readers will find:

1. Scientific and technical documents listed first by year of publication, and then by sector of activity: Nutrition; Health; Mental Health and Health Care – Food Security and Livelihoods – Water, Sanitation and Hygiene; Research; Crosscutting documents.

This document does not pretend to record every single scientific and technical reference document that exists, preferring to list those that have been published and those that are the subject of a specific promotion (“Tech the News”) Please note: This document does not include articles published in external scientific journals.

CHAPTER 2 – TECHNICAL NEWSLETTERS “Tech the News !”: The International Technical News letter This international newsletter was designed and created to build on and enhance the status of knowledge and technical expertise of the members of ACF’s International Network. It is published quarterly, each issue focussing in turn on one technical programme area (WASH, FSL, Nutrition). Whilst it is primarily intended for the network’s technical teams, both at Headquarters and in the field, the newsletter is also widely distributed to staff members (Operations, Communication…), the Board of Trustees and the International Scientific Committee. It is circulated by means of e-mail and is intentionally not made available on Internet. Each issue usually contains about 12 pages and sections in it always follow the same order:

1 - Editorial 2 - News from Headquarters 3 - Did you know… ? 4 - Questions asked… 5 - Zoom on a project 7 - Research and technical development 9 - What has happened? 10 - What’s next? What’s up?

The Newsletter is for the most part drafted in English. However, if an article exists only in French or Spanish, then it is included in the original language.

CHAPTER 3 – HUNGER WATCH PUBLICATIONS

In 2005 ACF created Hunger Watch, an epicentre for advocacy and research. The main

concern of this observatory is to identify the caus es of and responsibilities for current

food crises and their potential solutions. The Hung er Watch team examines

crosscutting factors such as conflict, market insta bility, gender, HIV/AIDS and

analyzes their relationships with acute hunger. The observatory also visits families

suffering from malnutrition in order to gather firs t hand testimony and discuss their

experiences of living with hunger. Moreover, it dev elops tools to define, measure and

compare the magnitude and gravity of malnutrition a nd hunger around the world.

Findings and recommendations are used to inform and influence humanitarian

practices and policies, enabling Action contre la F aim to enhance its own capacities,

fine-tune programme effectiveness, and influence ex ternal stakeholders.
