Dr Janet Harbison ‘Ireland’s Queen of the Harp’, Janet Harbison has lit a blazing trail for the Irish harp in many contexts – in large and small scale performance (from state concert halls to parish churches), in stagecraft (from her Grammy Award winning Belfast Harp Orchestra (with the Chieftains) to the current touring Irish Harp Orchestra), in academe (currently Visiting Professor at Ulster University, Northern Ireland), teaching (creator of the Harbison Harp Method and teacher of many of the most notable players in Ireland today), palliative care (working with Artscare in the NHS Trust Hospitals in Northern Ireland for many years and now training palliative harp therapists), with an extensive catalogue of original and arranged, small and large-scale composition for harps, voices and other instruments. In her Residential Harp Weeks, Workshops, Summer-schools and Teacher Training Courses, Janet Harbison continues to bring vitality, creativity, insight and inspiration to every generation and ability of player.

What people say “Studying under Dr. Janet Harbison was a life-changing experience for me. Janet is a master of the Irish harp, and an expert teacher. Her guidance and support were instrumental in helping me establish myself as a professional musician and harp teacher. I would highly recommend Janet's apprenticeship program to anyone interested in further training.”

Thea H, Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada

“I have just experienced four incredible weeks of total immersion harp studies. Honestly, I absolutely loved every minute of it and I’d do it all again in a heartbeat. I was exposed to wonderful stories of Irish history, amazing music, fabulous people, an incredible venue with excellent cuisine and your thoughtful curriculum complete with teachers on your team who are second to none. Thank you, Janet, and thanks to everyone for your contributions towards this magnificent learning experience. You’re all forever in my heart.”

Connie C, Okanagen Falls, BC, Canada

Janet, Thank you for today it was simply inspirational - you need to do a one woman theatre show - the music and stories were just captivating. A sincere thanks for sharing your talent I loved every minute of it!

Slow Airs Janet Harbison, Solo (2017) NEW RELEASE! Recorded in 2004 but not released until October 2017, this album of 23 slow airs is from the most profound and magical aspect of Irish traditional music. Walk in Belfast Composed by Janet one Sunday morning when walking on Cavehill overlooking Belfast city. The sun shone on a gleaming city – hiding the deep sadness of the civil unrest there – its ‘Troubles’… Item no: 4004 Level 4 € 10

Yellow Man On Janet Harbison’s CD: O’Neill’s Harper Based on an old traditional jig celebrating the sticky honeycomb sweet traditionally produced for children at the Ballycastle Fair, Janet turns this tune into a rhythmic adventure…. Item no: 4007 Level 4 € 8

ARRANGED HARP SOLOS: IRISH DANCE MUSIC Series 5 Many of the Solos are available from the website as download files with free mp3 The Atholl Highlanders & Burke’s Jig Two great jigs I learned from fiddlers Nigel and Diana Boullier in Bangor, Co.Down that became siren tunes for the Belfast Harp Orchestra (combined with Brian Boru’s March in the Brian Boru Set). Thanks Nigel and Diana! Item no: 5008 Level 3 €7.00

The Belfast Hornpipe One of the old-time best-known hornpipes that is a wonderful tune to play on harp – Here is my solo version – I also have it in arrangement for my harp orchestra which is a great deal of fun to play! Item no: 5007 Level 3 € 7

The Butterfly On Janet Harbison’s CD: O’Neill’s Harper One of the best-loved recently evolved slip-jigs. The first part is said to have been composed by the Dublin piper Tommy Potts which he added to an older tune called Bill Groggin’s Goat. The most iconic recording that has influenced almost all arrangements of the tune afterwards was on the first Bothy Band album – as is this arrangement of mine. However, so great is the tune that I have quite an adventure with it – using harmonics, LH counterpoints, syncopation…. Enjoy. Item no: 5009 Level 4 € 7

Flying to the The Fleadh & The Rectory Reel A great slip-jig composed by master Belfast uilleann piper and flute player, Patrick Davey, and first arranged for my 5 member group: Clarsheree when we toured to Sweden in the mid 1990s.

Another great tune from piper Patrick Davey when he was teaching at my harp summer school in Glencolmcille, Co. Donegal in the famous Rectory there! Lovely one Patrick! Also arranged for Clarsheree on that tour to Sweden… Item no: 5005 Level 3 € 7

The Harvest Home Another of the ‘olden goldie’ hornpipes that was composed by Scottish fiddler, Scott Skinner and first published by him in 1900. This is a great and accessible technical workout for players. Presented here in two versions; the first is the ‘every student prerequisite’ teaching travelling triplet and treble ornamentation. The second version is for concert performance. Item no: 5019 Level 4 € 7

Johnny Sit Down A cheeky little hornpipe in B minor that is a lot of fun to play. This tune evolved from the song Mister McGuire Sit Down sung by the Irish Rovers… Item no: 5003 Level 3 € 7

Kid on the Mountain A very old, 4 part slip-jig popular among uilleann pipers – but also a great tune on the harp for a seasoned traditional player. Item no: 5001 Level 3 € 7

McHugh’s Jig This is a great jig in Dminor that the wonderful Martin Power (Accordion) gave me on a cassette recording of tunes he put together for me when we were teaching the TTCT course in CCE, Dublin in the 1980s. Thanks Martin. It was a great tune to play with Harbison drama… Item no: 5002 Level 4 € 7

The Monaghan Jig One of the great 4 part old, traditional jig tunes that is perfect for the harper’s hand – and playable by all kinds of harps. I learned this at the Sean Tracy branch session with Comhaltas in the 1970s and happily introduced it to all my students as a ‘first big jig’ to play. Item no: 5012 Level 3 € 9

O’Neill’s Cavalcade & The Chase On Janet Harbison’s CD: O’Neill’s Harper The influence of the early Chieftains’ recordings on Irish music were enormous – and O’Neill’s Cavalcade was one of their seminal tunes. Here I combine it with one of my own titled ‘The Chase’… Item no: 5010 Level 3 € 7

Sergeant Early’s Dream I first played this arrangement myself in a Fleadh competition sometime back in the 1970s – but committed the arrangement to paper about 2012 for Muireann O Dwyer, one of my wonderful students from Templemore, Co. Tipperary. Item no: 5004 Level 4 € 7

Mazurka Set No.1 Sonny Brogan’s and Hugh Gillespie’s The perfect combination of 2 popular mazurkas: Sonny Brogan’s (Dublin accordion player 1906 – 65) and Hugh Gillespie’s (Donegal Fiddler 1906-1986), here in a solo version. (Also arranged for Ensemble. See Series 3) Item no: 5023 Level 3 € 7

O’Keefe’s Slide Padraic O’Keeffe (1887-1963) was a famous Kerry fiddler and school master. He composed a number of tunes – and this Slide, also known as a ‘Single Jig’ – that is usually scored in 12/8 time. It is a fast form of Jig played in a crotchet-quaver, crotchet-quaver rhythm. This one is a lot of fun to play and here it is arranged complete with ornamentation for an advanced player. (Also arranged for Ensemble. See Series 3) Item no: 5033 Level 4 € 7

Allisdrum’s March From my ‘Ulster Epic’ telling the story of the last battle of Allister McColcitto McDonnell – This was originally a harp piece that accompanied the recitation of the battle-story – that was carried by the uilleann pipers in the oral tradition to the last century when it found its way back to the harp. Allisdrums’ a truly vibrant jig-march that my harp orchestra performed for many years – and that we played with the Chieftains on the Grammy Award winning recording ‘The Celtic Harp’. ARRANGED HARP SOLOS: MISCELLANEOUS series 6 Many of the Solos are available from the website as download files with free mp3 An Chuilfhionn (in 3 Editions) In 3 renditions from the 18th and 20th Centuries. Firstly it is presented with minimal adaptation from Edward Bunting’s transcription of the singing of Denis Hempson, the oldest harper at the Belfast Harpers’ Assembly. (In the script, I also add phonetic pronunciations to assist unfamiliar singers with the Irish lyrics. Denis Hempson also performed 4 Variations to the air composed by Cornelius Lyons of the 1720s to which I have added a second version of the 4th Variation which I adapted for the Belfast Harp Orchestra in 1992 (performed on the recording). Lastly it is presented it in an instrumental version which I arranged and performed myself as a young professional in Knappogue Castle in the mid 1970s. Item no: 6005 Level 4 € 9

Danny Boy, The Londonderry Air Ireland’s best known and loved song in two versions: the first for Beginners to Intermediate players and the second for Advanced players. The tune originates from the 16th century harper’s composition ‘Codladh an Oigfhir’ (‘The Young Man’s Dream’) which was published by Edward Bunting in 1796. In the early 1800s, the tune was again written down by a lady Jane Ross of Limavady Co. Londonderry from the playing of a passing fiddler – which she sent to the folksong collector George Petrie as an anonymous tune - which he published in 1855 as the ‘Londonderry Air’ - and in 1910, the English song-writer Fred Weatherly put his text to it entitled ‘Danny Boy’. Item no: 6007 Level 3 & 4 € 7

The Faery Queen This is an historic harp piece from the 16th century with the last section said to be added by Carolan. Transcribed by Edward Bunting from the harping of Arthur O’Neill at the Belfast Harpers’ Assembly of 1792, he later published in his ‘Ancient Music of Ireland’. There is a fascinating background to this piece discussed in the ‘notes’ introduction. As a harp piece is it strong and courtly in manner with lots of down-rolled chording. Item no: 6003 Level 4 € 7

Hawk of Ballyshannon This is another strong historical harp piece attributed to the blind harper Ruairi Dall O Cathain in 1605. The Hawk of Ballyshannon was a nick-name of a powerful Irish chieftain who was honoured in the piece. Item no: 6002 Level 4 € 7

Pachelbel’s Canon Janet’s harp-friendly version that is very accessible and perfect for a wedding march. Item no: 6008 Level 4 € 7

Port na bPucaí This Slow Air is one of the loveliest and haunting airs of Ireland and one that Janet often performs solo or with Uilleann Pipes. Discovered by the late composer Sean O Riada, he related that the music was first heard by the fisherman Pádraig O Dálaigh while sheltering in a hut on a stormy night on the deserted island of Inishvickillaun – close to the Great Blasket off the coast of south Kerry in the wild Atlantic seas. He said he heard the ‘spirit woman’ wailing the tune on the wind… Item no: 6016 Level 4 € 7

Lady Iveagh An exceptionally beautiful and gentle tune for a lady of the name – composed by Thomas Connellan about 1660 and transcribed by Edward Bunting in 1802 from the harping of Patrick Linden at Newtownhamilton, Co. Armagh. This is the solo arrangement – but it also exists as an ensemble for 2 harps and 2 flutes (see Series 2). Item no: 6001 Level 4 € 8

She Moved through the Fair One of Ireland’s most beautiful airs – known both as an ‘air’ and a ‘slow air’ because of its ‘old style’ character. The air was noted down by Herbert Hughes and set to new lyrics by the poet Padraic Colum and published in 1909. This tune is arranged here as a solo but also exists arranged for harp ensemble (See Series 3). Item no: 6006 Level 4 € 7

Sunday Morning Transcribed by Edward Bunting in 1802 from the harp playing of Redmond Stanton at Westport, Co. Mayo where it was said to be ‘Very ancient, author and date unknown’. It has an unusual ‘lilt’ and would have had a song text that is since lost to history. Item no: 6004 Level 4 € 7

The Wild Geese One of the great harp compositions of the 1690s, this piece is a lamentation for the 20,000 Irish fighting men that had supported the Jacobite King James defeated by King William III in a series of battles (at Carrickfergus, Derry, the Boyne, Aughrim and finally Limerick in 1690) and were sent into exile without their women and children. In the 3rd part, you can hear the wailing of the women and the echoes of their cries… A powerful and sombre piece. Item no: 6009 Level 4 € 7

The Boyne Water This is a solo version of the great war-march – known in Northern Ireland as the ‘Boyne Water’ celebrating King Billy’s victory at the Battle of the Boyne (where the tune was heard played by the fifes), and ‘Rosc Catha na Mumhain’ (or the ‘War Cry of Munster’), where the tune found a new patriotic text for the Irish. Item no: 6017 Level 3 € 7

Carolan’s Concerto – 3 versions This arrangement is from my own performance of this great concert standard for Irish harping from as far back as I remember (certainly from the early 1970s!). Composed by the inimitable Turlough O’Carolan resulting from a musical dual between himself and Geminiani in the early 18th century…. (Also arranged for Ensemble. See Series 3) Item no: 6018 Level 4 € 7

Carrickfergus The famous song associated with this air is actually not so old – but it is still much loved and here it is in arrangement for an advanced player. Item no: 6019 Level 4 € 7

Carolan’s Planxty Irwin and Fanny Power 2 of Carolan’s most famous pieces in a favourite combination – arranged in 2 versions for harp solo – for Level 2 (Low Intermediate) and Level 4 (Advanced). Carolan was Ireland’s most famous harper composer from the days of the minstrel players. He lived 1670-1738 and invented the ‘Planxty’ (praise-piece). Item no: 6020 Level 4 € 7
