Founded in 2010 by Rosemarie Hudson, HopeRoad’s mission is to promote literature from Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. Themes of identity, cultural stereotyping and disability are grist to HopeRoad’s mill. Since the beginning of this year, Rosemarie has been joined by Pete Ayrton, editor and publisher, who in 1986 founded Serpent’s Tail, the cutting-edge publisher he retired from in 2016. Pete Ayrton will be heading up Small Axes, a new imprint that will focus on republishing out of print post-colonial classics that helped to shape cultural shifts at the time and remain as relevant today as when they were first published. On joining HopeRoad, Pete Ayrton said: ‘I have known Rosemarie for many years and always admired her choice of provocative, challenging books – like the best independents she only publishes works she cares for passionately. In the current cultural climate, there are many publishing opportunities to be had by risk-taking indies. We look forward to bringing back into print works that are ready for re-discovery and acclaim. Working with HopeRoad is already fun - hopefully, it will soon become profitable!’ First in the new imprint is The Nowhere Man by Kamala Markandaya – a novel first published in 1972 that depicts the brutal racism of everyday London. It is the only novel set in London by one of the great Indian writers of the 20th century. This is followed by Terrorism Explained to Our Kids, a powerful dialogue in which the Moroccan writer Tahar ben Jelloun assesses the roots of terrorism and its powers of seduction. These two titles are a sign of the rich treasures forthcoming in the series.

Istanbul, 1591 - and Sultan Murad III, the mightiest ruler in the world, has been robbed. The Staff of Moses, held at the parting of the Red Sea, has been stolen and the furious Sultan wants it back. A small undercover unit of hand-picked, trusted warriors is hastily assembled to track down the thieves.

The action is fast and furious, and their quest to return the Sultan’s stolen magical symbol of power is a mission that is (almost) impossible . . .

Set against thrilling backdrops including the roofs of the Grand Bazaar of Istanbul, the canals of Venice and the court of Queen Elizabeth I, A Tudor Turk is a rich, satisfying and thrilling read.

REHAN KHAN is an avid observer of history and has always been intrigued by how ideas and informa-tion move from one civilisation to the next; how nations and tribes have prospered from the efforts of their predecessors. Throughout his travels, he is constantly fascinated by the nar-ratives, legends and chronicles which unite cultures as opposed to shatter-ing them into a thousand pieces.

A gripping psychological tale, enlivened by wickedly sharp insights into contemporary small-town life. Yun Yun lives in a small West China town with her widowed father, and an uncle, aunt and older cousin who live nearby. Then, her once-secure world falls apart. Through her eyes, we observe her cousin, Zhang Qing, keen to dive into the excitements of adolescence but clashing with repressive parents. Ensuing tensions reveal that the relationships between the two families are founded on a terrible lie.

Srinivas, an elderly Brahmin, has been living in a south London suburb for thirty years. After the death of his son, and later his wife, this lonely man is befriended by an Englishwoman in her sixties, whom he takes into his home. The two form a deep and abiding relationship. But the haven they have created for themselves proves to be a fragile one. Racist violence enters their world and Srinivas’s life changes irrevocably – as does his dream of England as a country of tolerance and equality.

First published in 1972, The Nowhere Man depicts a London convulsed by fear and bitterness. Truly shocking, it is as relevant today as when it was first published almost fifty years ago.

KAMALA MARKANDAYA (1924 – 2004) was born in Mysore, India. She studied history at Madras Uni-versity and later worked for a small progressive magazine before mov-ing to London in 1948 in pursuit of a career in journalism. There she began writing her novels; Nectar in a Sieve, her debut published in 1954, was an international best-seller. A contemporary of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala and R.K. Narayan, Kamala Markandaya is now being rediscovered as an essential figure in the post-colonial canon.

‘With The Nowhere Man, Markandaya wrote a British state of the nation novel whose acuteness

and depth of understanding, unsung at the time, resounds eerily today’

EMMA GARMAN, Paris Review

After Racism and Islam, Terrorism Explained to Our Kids isTahar ben Jelloun’s impassioned, succinct explanation of the seductions and dangers of terrorism in the modern world.

It takes the form of a dialogue between the author and his teenage daughter. Using her ill-defined fears as the starting point, this challenging book begins with a discussion of what it means to be civilised and leads the reader through an evaluation and analysis of the place of Islam in the modern world and its relationship to Islamist terrorism. Exploring all forms of terrorism in both a historical and contemporary context, the book addresses complex and pressing questions in an everyday, accessible language. Because Ben Jelloun understands that terrorist acts come from the perpetrators’ deep sense of inadequacy, his arguments are all the more powerful. He places a high value on the importance of secular values, with which he believes Islam is compatible. This is a powerful, timely plea for tolerance and understanding.

TAHAR BEN JELLOUN is an award-winning and internationally bestselling Moroccan novelist, essayist, critic, and poet. Two previous books in the series explained Racism and Islam to a younger readership.

‘Morocco’s greatest living author ... his impressive body of work combines intellect

and imagination in magical fusion.’ Guardian

‘Tahar Ben Jelloun is the sort of writer who gets mentioned every year as a possible

contender for the Nobel, though he’s probably too good to ever get it’

HopeRoad promotes inclusive literature focussing on Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. We vigorously support often

neglected voices and many of our YA titles focus on issues dealing with identity, cultural stereotyping and disability.

At the heart of our publishing is the

love of outstanding writing.
