Hal Leonard Australia (HLA) is one of Australia and New Zealand’s leading dramatic licensing agencies. On behalf of Music Theatre International (MTI), we grant schools and theatres around the world the rights to perform the largest selection of great musicals from Broadway and beyond.

HLA is particularly dedicated to the idea of theatre as education. In 1997, MTI created the MTI Broadway Junior Collection® for younger performers.

With an MTI Broadway Junior Collection® show, putting on a musical will be the most cost-effective program you can establish for your organisation—and it has clear benefits for all involved.

For once, here’s a project that can involve a nearly unlimited number of students without costing an arm and a leg. Ensembles in MTI Broadway Junior Collection® shows can be as numerous as 100 students, making the material’s extremely affordable.

Teachers won’t have to spend hours writing original musicals to fit their students’ acting skills and vocal ranges.

The process of putting on a show cultivates school spirit and generates community support.

Curriculum Connections: A musical helps students make connections across a variety of subjects. Teachers can use the musical as context in teaching History, Science, and English. Art, Music, and Physical Education classes can be geared towards creating props, learning songs, and practicing dance steps.

Since 1997, over 30,000 productions of shows from the MTI Broadway Junior Collection® have taught kids and entertained audiences around the world. The success of our shows is best measured in the self-confidence, discipline, character, cooperation and self-esteem instilled in the children who have participated in the shows, as they master the diverse skills necessary to present a musical.

MTI KIDS shows are specifically designed for the energies (and attention spans!) of primary school students.

At just half an hour in length, MTI KIDS shows are long enough to tell a complete story through script, song and dance, while short enough to be well within your cast’s abilities. MTI KIDS titles include adaptations of classic Disney films, such as Sleeping Beauty and The Aristocats, to beloved children’s books, such as A Year With Frog And Toad.

Picking a musical for middle-schoolers can be challenging. You not only have to find a show that will excite your students, you also have to make sure the score can accommodate young voices—some of which could change at any time. Successfully staging a two-hour musical can seem impossible!

That’s why we created MTI JR. titles. Every MTI JR. show is specifically adapted for adolescent voices, saving your students from struggling through numbers they won’t be prepared to tackle for a few more years. Since all shows are roughly 60-70 minutes long, these adaptations are better suited for the stamina of younger actors—and the attention spans of younger audiences!

MTI JR. shows range from Disney favorites (Beauty & The Beast, High School Musical) to Broadway classics (Fiddler On The Roof, Guys And Dolls) to modern works (Once On This Island, Dear Edwina). We also license shows written only for MTI JR., like Disney’s Mulan and Disney’s Winnie the Pooh KIDS. With a variety of subject matter and required skill levels, MTI JR. musicals redefine the middle school theatre experience.

THE STORYArnold Lobel’s well-loved characters hop from the page to the stage in Robert and Willie Reale’s musical adaptation. Conceived by Mr. Lobel’s daughter, Adrianne Lobel, A Year With Frog And Toad KIDS remains true to the spirit of the original stories as it follows two great friends, the cheerful and popular Frog and the rather grumpy Toad, through four fun-filled seasons. A score that bubbles with melody and wit, its jazzy upbeat sound is a perfect match for the hopping, crawling and flying denizens that inhabit Frog and Toad’s world. Adapted from the Broadway production, and destined to become a classic, A Year With Frog And Toad KIDS is inventive, exuberant and totally enchanting.

WAYS TO EXPANDBecause the show is divided into different animal groups you can fill your stage with as many Snails, Moles, Birds, and Squirrels as you like.

MUSICAL DIFFICULTYThere are a large number of solos for Frog and Toad, and a small solo for Turtle. The rest of the music is simple ensemble singing.

STAGING DEMANDSThis production is one of the easiest to stage and the Choreographic DVD in the ShowKit™ gives you ideas on how to create the sledding hill.

CONSIDERATIONSYou will need two good actors and singers for the roles of Frog and Toad. The majority of the other characters work and sing in larger groups. It is the perfect show to cast different classrooms as each of the different animal groups in the show.

INVOLVE THE COMMUNITYHave your cast start a mentor program with younger students in your school. Get copies of the Frog and Toad books from the library and have the students practice reading one or more of the stories out loud. Once they are comfortable with the stories, arrange a time for them to visit the pre-school or youngest students at your school and read the stories to them. Then invite these students to come and see a performance of your show.

PERFECT FOR LARGE ENSEMBLES, FEATURED ROLES, STRONG SINGERS

CONSIDERATIONSAladdin JR. has plenty of parts featuring young performers with solo lines throughout the score. Most roles can be played by boys or girls, with the exception of Jasmine, Aladdin, and Jafar, all of whom should be strong singers.

INVOLVE THE COMMUNITYIdentify a local marketplace that has a variety of different shops. This could be a farmer’s market, a mall or a craft fair. Have your students talk to these merchants about the things they do to support their business. Then invite the different merchants to help with the set of the show by donating their time, skills, and maybe even goods for the “Agrabah Marketplace.”

THE STORYWelcome to Agrabah, City of Enchantment, where every beggar has a story and every camel has a tail! All of your favorite characters are here in this stage adaptation of the Disney hit, including Aladdin, Jasmine, and of course, the Genie. Filled with magic, mayhem, and flying carpet rides, Aladdin JR. will have audiences’ spirits soaring with excitement. Most of all, the tuneful, Academy Award®-winning score with songs including “A Whole New World” and “Friend Like Me” will certainly make this musical a favorite for many years to come!

CONSIDERATIONSAlice in Wonderland JR. is the perfect show if you have large number of talented singers and actors. Because of the episodic nature of the show every character will have their chance to be the focus of the story. The majority of the show takes place in Wonderland, which will allow you to be as creative as you can with the scenery, costumes and characters.

INVOLVE THE COMMUNITYTalk to your local parks department about working with them for a weekend. Your cast can help with park and playground clean up or even possibly plant your own flower garden. If you get to plant your own garden, use the flowers and characters from the story for inspiration for your planting and layout choices.

THE STORYJoin Alice’s madcap adventures in Wonderland as she chases the White Rabbit, races the Dodo Bird, gets tied up with the Tweedles, raps with a bubble-blowing Caterpillar, and beats the Queen of Hearts at her own game! Roles are plentiful, including three Cheshire Cats and dozens of other wonderfully wacky characters. This fast-paced stage adaptation of Alice in Wonderland features updated dialogue and new arrangements of such classic Disney songs as “I’m Late,” “The Un-birthday Song” and “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah.”

WAYS TO EXPANDThe featured roles of the Narrators and the Silly Girls can be expanded to include as many performers as possible. In addition, the show includes two ensembles comprised of townspeople and servants in the castle.

MUSICAL DIFFICULTYThe show includes quite a bit of music, with several solos for Belle and solo songs for Gaston, Lumiere and Mrs. Potts. A few of the ensemble songs include challenging harmony and provide an opportunity to showcase a musically talented cast.

STAGING DEMANDSWhile the castle and the magic of the Beast’s transformation are some of the highlights of this production, many of the effects can be achieved with very simple theatrical conventions. Tricks and tips are outlined in the Director’s Guide. The ensemble numbers do not require any complex choreography but there are many opportunities to showcase the strong dancers in your cast.

CONSIDERATIONSBeauty And The Beast JR. has dozens of stand-out featured roles and several strong leading roles for both boys and girls. Due to its fairy tale setting, there is a wonderful opportunity for creative production elements.

CONSIDERATIONSMulan JR. has a large number of both female and male principal characters who all need to be able to sing solo lines. Because the musical centers on a woman pretending to be a man, there are 6 or 7 major roles that definitely need be played by boys. There are also a good number of small, featured roles in the show to showcase your ensemble members.

INVOLVE THE COMMUNITYTry to find a member of your local community or in a community nearby who can come in to talk to your cast about traditional Chinese customs and heritage. If possible have them read a version of the original Mulan poem to your cast in the Chinese language. Finally, work with a local restaurant to plan a dinner where you give the students the opportunity to sample traditional Chinese food.

THE STORYTravel back to the legendary, story-telling days of ancient China with this action-packed stage adaptation of Disney’s Mulan. The Huns have invaded, and it is up to the misfit Mulan and her mischievous sidekick Mushu to save the Emperor! Mulan JR. is a heartwarming celebration of culture, honor and a fighting spirit. The score includes favorites like “Reflection,” “Honor to Us All” and “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” as well as new songs that will get your audience up on its feet!

WAYS TO EXPANDMulan JR. allows for a large ensemble of Soldiers, Brides-To-Be and Family Members. The show is also written to use a large ensemble of actors supporting the show as a chorus.

MUSICAL DIFFICULTYWith many solos and solo lines for Mulan, the 5 Ancestors, Shang, Mushu, the three soldiers and ensemble singing with harmonies, this show is musically one of the more challenging of the MTI JR. titles. There are a number of solo line opportunities if you have a large and talented cast.

CAST INFORMATION16 principals, 4 featured roles

WAYS TO EXPANDThere is no chorus/ensemble in Into The Woods JR. If you want to involve more cast members, consider double casting some of the roles (two actors learn one role, performing at alternate performances).

MUSICAL DIFFICULTYThe score is more difficult than other MTI JR. titles, requiring nearly all roles to tackle featured solos at some point. Most ensemble numbers are written in unison or simple two-part harmony.

STAGING DEMANDSChoreography and technical requirements are minimal. The Choreography DVD included in your ShowKit™ provides step-by-step instructions for choreographing the ensemble numbers.

CONSIDERATIONSInto The Woods JR. is a good show for strong featured performers, providing kids an opportunity to explore emotionally complex characters and highly dramatic situations. With a lot of solo singing, this show could be more challenging than other titles, and might be better for older children.

INVOLVE THE COMMUNITYBring your students to a national park and have them explore the woods. Have one of the park rangers talk to them about what kind of animals specifically live in that forest and the dangers of being in the woods alone. Next, work with the park rangers to bring branches and other natural items from the woods back into your school to use as scenery.

THE STORYThe Brothers Grimm “go Broadway” as Sondheim and Lapine offer up a cockeyed fairy tale where all of your favorite characters – Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (and his beanstalk) and The Witch – meet and interact on their journeys. With unforgettable roles, little dancing and no chorus, Into The Woods JR.showcases a medium-sized ensemble of talented singers and actors. The sophisticated score has been adapted to make it easier – though still challenging – for young performers. Into The Woods JR. is a fun and engaging way to get young people to think about the stories with which they’ve grown up and the ethical issues raised therein.

CONSIDERATIONSThe Music Man JR. features star turns for a young male and female performer, but is also rich with great roles for performers of every level. The score also provides opportunities to showcase students with strong vocal or dance abilities.

INVOLVE THE COMMUNITYHave your students visit a retirement community and talk to some of the residents about attending community social events in their past. Discuss similarities between scenes from the show and the real life experiences of these new people they have just met.

THE STORYThe Music Man is an American musical classic, following fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill and his visit to River City, Iowa where he meets and falls in love with the willful spinster librarian, Marian Paroo. With his fast-talking style, “Professor” Hill convinces the town to form a marching band and adopt his revolutionary music program, “The Think System,” or face the moral decline of the youngsters of River City. STAGING DEMANDSWith virtually no set and little technical requirements, the ensemble functions very prominently in the action. Creative dance or movement-driven staging is also part of the show’s style, calling upon performers to portray trees, wild animals and a fierce rainstorm.

CONSIDERATIONSTold in a presentational style, Once On This Island JR. is equally effective regardless of its cast size and features minimal – though colorful – sets and costumes that capture the imagination of the audience. There are opportunities to highlight individual singers and dancers, while still focusing mainly on an ensemble feel.

MUSICAL DIFFICULTYThis is one of our more musically difficult shows. Strong singers are a must for the principle roles. There are a fair amount of ensemble numbers.

There are many ensemble parts and featured roles, some of which can be double-cast if you have a limited number of students. This is a great piece to showcase your stronger singers.

INVOLVE THE COMMUNITYWhen most people are bored, a magical tollbooth doesn’t whisk them away—they have to think up things to do on their own. One excellent way to combat boredom is to channel your energy towards helping someone else. Have your students learn about volunteer activities in their area by inviting organizers to speak at your school, and by seeing firsthand how those organizations help those who need it. Urge your students to volunteer at one of those organizations, or find ways to help their community on their own.

WAYS TO EXPANDYou can always give the Major General more daughters, or fill out the ranks of policemen. And if nothing else, your stage should be filled with lots of pirates!

MUSICAL DIFFICULTYThere are solos for all principals, and many featured sections for the ensemble. There is a lot of ensemble and small group singing, with parts written in unison or simple two-part harmony.

STAGING DEMANDSWhile not a lot of dance is required, the Major General’s daughters could highlight a few female dancers. If the pirates or policemen have any physical comedy or acrobatic skills, those could certainly come in handy.

CONSIDERATIONSThe Pirates Of Penzance JR. is a great show for a large ensemble with plenty of good singers. There are many great featured parts to showcase all talents and levels of ability – including some great roles for performers with comedic skills.

INVOLVE THE COMMUNITYIn the show, Frederick has been raised since childhood by Ruth, his nursemaid. Have your students go to a local pre-school or day care center and perform a few of their numbers from the show. Let them stay awhile after the performance to interact with the younger children and gain a deeper understanding of the responsibilities of caring for children.

THE STORYWacky, irreverent and as entertaining today as it was when it first opened in 1879, The Pirates Of Penzance JR. spins a hilarious farce of sentimental pirates, bumbling policemen, dim-witted young lovers, dewy-eyed daughters and an eccentric Major-General, all morally bound to the often-ridiculous dictates of honor and duty.

CONSIDERATIONSSeussical JR. is a great show for large groups of students who enjoy singing. It is also a good show for a cast of students who enjoy playing larger than life characters. You will need to have a number of strong singers who are also good dancers or movers to play the Wickersham Brothers and the Bird Girls.

INVOLVE THE COMMUNITYTalk to your local library or bookstore to see if you can find a time to have some of your cast members read stories to young children. Choose one of the stories that features one of the characters found in Seussical JR. Beyond being a good way to give back to your community, this project will also improve your cast members’ storytelling skills.

THE STORY“After all those years being stuck on a page, Did you ever imagine you’d see me on stage?” So says the mischievous Cat in the Hat at the onset of this fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza! Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty have lovingly brought to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, Lazy Mayzie, and all of the Whos of Whoville! The score is a Seussian Gumbo of musical styles, ranging from Latinto pop, swing to gospel, and R&B to funk! So let your toes tap, your fingers snap, and your imagination run wild!

THE SONGSOh, The Thinks You Can Think!, Biggest Blame Fool, Here On Who, How To Raise A Child, It’s Possible, Alone In The Universe, Amayzing Mayzie, Monkey Around, Notice Me, Horton, How Lucky You Are, Egg, Nest And Tree, Solla Sollew, All For You

CAST INFORMATION10 principals, 6 featured roles, plus ensemble

WAYS TO EXPANDYou can cast as many Wickersham Brothers and Bird Girls as you like to fill out those songs and numbers. Additionally, the jungle, underwater and circus scenes allow for as many characters as you want to add.

MUSICAL DIFFICULTYThere are large Solos for Horton, JoJo, Mayzie, Gertrude, Sour Kangaroo and Cat In The Hat. Most of the ensemble music in the show is simple to learn but some of the songs are quite wordy and will need good diction.

STAGING DEMANDSProduction can be staged very simply with a few levels and fun props. Look to your Director’s Guide for simple and creative ideas.

CAST INFORMATION8 principals, plus ensemble

WAYS TO EXPANDYou can have as many secretaries as you’d like working with Millie and Mr. Graydon and there is plenty of room for lots of Dancers, and Jail Birds.

MUSICAL DIFFICULTYThere are some strong solo demands for Millie and Jimmie, and the ensemble numbers are complicated, but musically logical. Also, Bun Foo, Ching Ho, and Mrs. Meers must both speak and sing in Mandarin during the show.

STAGING DEMANDSThis show has a lot of numbers involving choreography including some that include basic tap dancing. The Choreography DVD included in your ShowKit™ provides step-by-step instructions for choreographing some of the numbers.

CONSIDERATIONSThoroughly Modern Millie JR. is set in the 1920’s and has a great jazz-infused score. Also, don’t be afraid of the Mandarin in the show. Your ShowKit™ comes with full pronunciation guides. And while the music in the show is perfect for tap dancing, you can easily modify all of the dances to be done without tap.

INVOLVE THE COMMUNITYBun Foo and Ching Ho both speak Mandarin during the show. Find a native Mandarin speaker that you can bring to talk to your students!

THE STORYThoroughly Modern Millie is a high-spirited musical romp that has everyone dancing the Charleston. It’s the zany new 1920’s musical that took Broadway by storm! Taking place in New York City in 1922, Thoroughly Modern Millie JR. tells the story of young Millie Dillmount, who moves to the city in search of a new life for herself. Full of intrigue and jazz and based on the popular movie, the stage version of Thoroughly Modern Millie JR. includes a full score of new songs and bright dance numbers. Frisky flappers, dashing leading men and a dragon-lady of a villainess audiences love to hate make this show a perfectly constructed evening of madcap merriment. And with the role of Millie Dillmount, musical theatre has found a new heroine for the ages.

THE SONGSNot For The Life Of Me, Thoroughly Modern Millie, They Don’t Know, What Do I Need With Love?, Only In New York, Jimmy, Forget About The Boy, Muqin, Long As I’m Here With You, Gimme Gimme

The MTI BROADWAY JUNIOR COLLECTION® allows our school to come alive. Each year the students ask earnestly, ‘What show are we performing?’ and ‘How soon can we get started?’ They have ownership over the production and it is always something they are proud of each time. It gives us a sense of family and community. The Scholars Academy
