At Van Nicholas the research, design and

fabrication process is a continuously evolving

process with one aim: to create the best frames

possible for their intended application.

We believe that the best material for bicycle frame

construction is Titanium. So aerospace grade

Titanium is the only material we use. The following

pages explain why, in more detail. And the pages

after that introduce you to our Road, Multi-sport,

Touring / Cross and MTB bikes.

We started out as a family company, and remain

one at heart: for example my father, a keen cyclist

all his life, is in charge of our team of engineers

who hand-build every bike to order.

But we constantly seek to evolve. New for 2008,

is the Blaze – our first Multi-sport machine and

a refined range of our own parts and clothing.

These complement the most current, top-brand

Group Sets and components we hold in stock so

you can specify your Van Nicholas exactly how

you want. And of course, if you want the ultimate

option, we’ll even custom-build one of our frames

exactly to your individual dimensions.

In a traditional tube set maximum stress will

happen at the weld because it is a Heat Affected

Zone. For a butted tube, the maximum stress will

be located away from the weld. The combination

of butted tubes and 3AL/2.5V Ti have a significant

advantage on weight, maximum ‘Von Mises’

Stress, deformation and safety factor over

traditional tubes.

Titanium’s unique properties make it an excellent

material for bicycle frame construction. Its high

strength, low density, low modulus, excellent

fatigue and corrosion resistance deliver a skeleton

that is not only extremely strong and durable,

but also incredibly lightweight.

Titanium does not break down, rust or corrode

in any type of atmospheric environment. Titanium

is so resistant to corrosion it does not need

to be treated or painted. Moreover, we believe

simply brushing the bare metal adds to its

aesthetic appeal.

The manufacturer of the Titanium tubing we

use adheres to the strict ISO-9002 standards

for quality, trusted by the United State’s top

aerospace and defence contractors. Van Nicholas

uses two different Titanium alloys to construct

our frames.

The traditional 3AL/2.5V Titanium

tubing is the same high strength material used in

the most advanced aerospace applications. It is

drawn, seamless tubing that can be welded with

the other tubes to form the bike frame. The tubes

are cold-worked to provide additional strength to

the material and the correct shaped tubing for

the frame’s design. This creates an extremely

lightweight and strong racing machine, where

the geometry of the frame is tailored by working

the tube sets to create the perfect ride.

The Aeolus utilises seamless 3AL/2.5V

double-butted Titanium tubing. This not only

provides overall weight savings compared to

traditional tubing, but also results in even less

chance of failure.

The advantages of using Titanium for frame

building will far outweigh any changes in fashion.

is not lost through the tubing, but springy too,

so road vibration is minimized enhancing comfort

on long rides.

> Titanium has an excellent combination of

strength-to-weight and stiffness-to weight. Using

thin walled 0.8 / 0.9mm Titanium tubing enables

good fatigue life, but can avoid a harsh ride due to

the inbuilt flexing that soaks up road vibration.

> Titanium will remain a premium material

based on production processes required for

manufacture and welding.

> Every frame we make is custom drawn.

Each tube set is designed to maximize strength

and performance by using differing thickness of

tubing, in addition to utilizing ovalization, and

biaxial ovalized tubing.

> Metals have better crash damage tolerance

and can often be repaired. A few knocks in

transit or racing do not normally create hidden

damage issues.

Design - The Van Nicholas Blaze represents long hours and late nights of

extensive planning, design, and testing based on aerodynamics and optimal

performance delivery. Utilising cold-worked, aerodynamically enhanced

3Al/2V tubing throughout, the Blaze’s ability to cut through the air is aided by

a radiused seat tube that ‘tucks in’ the rear wheel, fully concealed cables and

an integrated aero seat post system. The Blaze is a rare machine: rocket-fast,

multi-sport suitable but still delivering Titanium-trademark comfort.

Design - The geometry of the Van Nicholas Amazon has been designed to

enhance day-long comfort and stability under load, whilst still offering

rewarding handling for a faster ride. The Amazon is our Cycle-Cross / Touring /

upright road and Audax frame. You can seize the day and configure this frame

in a multitude of variations to meet your performance and riding criteria.

Complete rack and fender braze-on’s, with ample tyre clearance allows you to

use and attach anything that your riding requires. The frame is cantilever,

V-brake, and Disc Brake compatible, as well as having three sets of water

bottle bosses.

The Van Nicholas Amazon Rohloff - New for 2008, you can now spec

the Amazon with the award winning enclosed 14-gear Rohloff hub for smooth,

almost un-noticeable shifting. Practically bullet proof, it means you can do

away with the rear mech and cassette thus reducing maintenance.

The Amazon Rohloff’s drop-out and cable guides differ from the standard

bike and the decals are silver instead of blue.

Design - The Yukon geometry has been configured to enhance daylong

comfort day after day, yet offer the stability necessary for the rewarding

at a light tour as it is on a club run, it’s an all year round solution that’s

ideal for northern European conditions.

Design -The ultimate expedition-touring bike must be strong, adaptable,

safe but above all reliable in even the most demanding terrain and conditions.

In designing the Pioneer, our first aim was to create a bike that had as little

as possible that could go wrong: so no hydraulic cables, no derailleurs and

no front suspension. Simple, yes. But we haven’t skimped on the materials.

We’ve combined a heavy-duty, paint-free Titanium frame with a Titanium

seat post and bullet-proof Schwalbe Balloon Tires for comfort. And it comes

with the integrated 14-gear Rohloff system (like having 27-MTB gears) for

one-handed shifting through the entire range, whilst stationary or pedalling.

Design - The Tuareg geometry has been created to enhance single-track

responses, as well as provide a degree of comfort not usually found in MTB

frames. Comparatively short chain stays give great climbing and traction,

whilst the tubing profiles are designed to soak up the trail buzz that makes

rival hard tails tiring. A high-spec performance bike for the fast paced

cross-country rider, it’s built to hammer single track trails.

The Van Nicholas Tuareg 29” - The 29” wheeled version of the Tuareg brings

all the design and performance of the regular 26” wheeled model but

with added ‘roll ability’. A very specialist machine indeed, its extra clearance,

allowing for bigger wheels, gives it a smoother ride.

Design - The Zion is an all-action, do-anything-to-it, on and off-road,

in-comfort bike. It is also capable of taking forks with 100 mm ‘give’.

The frame incorporates classic Van Nicholas geometry, size specific 3AL/2.5V

seamless Titanium tubing, and our acclaimed hand-brushed finish.

The Van Nicholas Zion Single Speed - If a derailleur isn’t your bag,

then this single-speed option is a great alternative, particularly for the urban

landscape. The Titanium frame allied to just one gear gives you a purer

feedback and a more invigorating ride – it’s a feel thing.

The Van Nicholas Zion Rohloff - You can’t get rid of the dirt in dirt tracks

but with this ultra-smooth, ultra-slick enclosed 14-gear option, you can cut

down on the post ride clean up. Makes light touring a real pleasure too.

the majority of our customers buy a complete

bike from our website. There are two reasons

for this: we stock the latest components from

top manufacturers like Campagnolo, Shimano,

Continental, Fizik, Ritchey and many more.

And every bike is built by hand.

Our online ‘Bike-builder’ tool makes it easy.

Titanium Bar Ends

At 98g, the new Van Nicholas laser engraved bar ends incorporate a short,

cold-worked ovalized profile to provide an easier-to-grip surface. Aerospace grade

3AL/2.5V Titanium alloy, 110mm length with welded end caps. Stainless steel

clamp bolts included.

Titanium Stem

Introducing the Van Nicholas 3AL/2.5V Titanium stem, with a CNC machined alloy 4-

bolt removable faceplate. This stem has a 31.8mm clamp diameter, a 85° rise, and

comes in 90, 100, 110 and 120mm lengths. A perfect fit for any of the new

Van Nicholas handlebars.

Titanium Headset Spacers

Custom-made 3AL/2.5V Titanium headset spacers create a clean look when

combined with a Van Nicholas Titanium stem. Available in 5, 10 and 15mm height.

Titanium Seat Post

Van Nicholas introduces its new hand-brushed Titanium seat post with bead-blasted

minimal insertion for extra grip. Titanium is one of the best materials for seat posts

because its deflects shock and increase comfort. The post is manufactured from

aerospace grade 3AL/2.5V Titanium, with a 27.2mm diameter.

VNT Carbon SL Fork

Launching the new lightweight Van Nicholas VNT Carbon SL fork, with an 11/8”

carbon steerer tube, and a 43 mm rake. At only 370g this fork provides superior

stiffness and an incredibly smooth ride.
