System Overview

For some years now, powergeneration and distributionhave been undergoing majorchanges. The innovation cy-cles (where operating equip-ment and communicationmedia are concerned) are get-ting ever shorter, and themarket is becoming increas-ingly deregulated.

The systems used to monitorpower supply equipment andprocesses must take accountof these changes.

When new products are used,user-friendliness and interfac-ing to various communicationmedia are important features.

SICAM PAS (PowerAutomation System) meets allthe demands made of a dis-tributed substation controlsystem – both now and in thefuture. Amongst many otherstandardized communicationprotocols SICAM PAS supportsthe new IEC 61850 substationstandard for communicationwith bay devices. SICAM PASis an open system and – inaddition to standardized datatransfer processes – it fea-tures user interfaces for theintegration of system-specifictasks and offers multipleautomation options.

SICAM PAS can thus be inte-grated with ease in existingsystems and can be used forsystem integration too. Withmodern diagnostics, it opti-mally supports commission-ing and maintenance.

SICAM PAS is clearly structur-ed and reliable, thanks to itsopen, fully documented andtested system.

System overview, applica-tion and functionality ofSICAM PAS

SICAM PAS is an energyautomation solution; itssystem architecture makesit scalable.

SICAM PAS is suitable foroperating a substation notonly from one single stationcomputer (station unit), butalso in combination withother SICAM PAS systems orstation control units. Com-munication in this networkis based on a powerfulEthernet LAN.

SICAM PAS for safe substa-tion automation based onrobust hardware compo-nents (non-rotating compo-nents) and an embeddedoperating system.

With its features and itsmodular expandability,SICAM PAS covers a broadrange of applications andsupports distributed systemconfigurations. A distrib-uted SICAM PAS system op-erates simultaneously onseveral computers.

SICAM PAS can use existinghardware components andcommunication standardsas well as their connections.

SICAM PAS controls and reg-isters the process data for alldevices of a substation, within the scope of the datatransfer protocols supported.

SICAM PAS is a communica-tion gateway. This is whyonly one single data con-nection to a higher-levelsystem control center is re-quired.

SICAM PAS enables integra-tion of a fully graphical pro-cess visualization systemdirectly in the substation.

SICAM PAS simplifies instal-lation and parameterizationof new devices, thanks to itsintuitive user interface.

SICAM PAS is notable for itsonline parameter settingfeatures, particularly whenthe system has to be ex-panded. There are no gen-eration times, and there isno need for loading into atarget system (unless con-figuration is performed on aseparate engineering PC).

SICAM PAS features integrat-ed testing and diagnosticfunctions.

Its user-friendliness, itsoperator control logic, itsorientation to the Windowsworld and its open structureideally suit users’ require-ments.

SICAM PAS is developed inaccordance with selectedsecurity standards.

Communication

System architecture

SICAM PAS works on PC-com-patible hardware with theMicrosoft Windows 2000,Windows XP Professional andWindows XP Embedded oper-ating systems. The advan-tages of this platform are lowhardware and software costs, ease of operation, scalability, flexibility and constantlyavailable support.

With the powerful real-timedata distribution system, ap-plications can be allocatedamong several computers, thus boosting performance, connectivity and availability.

A system stores and organizesthe database (e.g. configura-tion data, administrative sta-tus data, etc.).

The device master functionfor communication withIntelligent Electronic Devices(IEDs) supports a large num-ber of well-established proto-cols.

The SICAM PAS datanormalization function allowssuch conversions as measure-ment filtering, threshold cal-culation and linearcharacteristics.

SICAM PAS CC is used for pro-cess visualization. Specificallydesigned for energy automa-tion, it assists in optimizationof operations management. Itprovides a quick introductionto the subject matter and aclearly arranged display of thesystem’s operating states.

SICAM PAS CC is based onSIMATIC WinCC, well-knownin industrial automationworldwide.

To facilitate incident analysis, the fault recordings from pro-tection units are retrieved andarchived automatically duringoperation. This is supportedby the IEC 61850 andPROFIBUS FMS (SIPROTEC 4)protocols, or theIEC 60870-5-103 protectionunits protocol. SICAM Recprois used for archiving and navi-gation in the fault recordingarchive. Fault recordings arevisualized with ComtradeView (included with SICAMRecpro). Alternatively, SIGRA 4can also be used.

CommunicationDevice interfaces and commu-nication protocols

In a substation that you con-figure and operate withSICAM PAS, you can use vari-ous types of protection units,IEDs, bay control units,measured-value recorders andtelecontrol units from a widerange of manufacturers.

SICAM PAS offers a largenumber of commercially avail-able communication protocolsfor recording data from vari-ous devices and through dif-fering communicationchannels. Subsequent expan-sion is easy.

 Available protocols

These communication proto-cols and device drivers can beobtained as optional additionsto the standard scope ofSICAM PAS.

– IEC 61850

IEC 61850 is the communi-cation standard for inter-connecting the devices atthe bay and station controllevels on the basis ofEthernet. IEC 61850 sup-ports the direct exchange ofdata between IEDs, thus en-abling switching interlocksacross bays independentlyof the station control unit, for example.

– PROFIBUS FMS

Most SIPROTEC 4 bay con-trollers and protection units(see Figs. 2 and 3) can beconnected to the SICAM PASstation unit withPROFIBUS FMS.

Many of the functionalaspects standardized inIEC 61850 have been antici-pated in this communica-tion platform.

Communication

Device interfaces and commu-nication protocols

– IEC 60870-5-103

Protection units, IEDs, baycontrol units, measured-value recorders and trans-former controllers frommany manufacturers sup-port the IEC 60870-5-103protocol and can thereforebe connected directly toSICAM PAS.

– IEC 60870-5-101 (master)

The IEC 60870-5-101 proto-col is generally used to con-nect telecontrol units.

The ‘balanced’ and ‘unbal-anced’ traffic modes aresupported.

Automatic dialing is alsosupported for the connec-tion of substations with thisprotocol.

SICAM PAS can establish thedial-up connection to thesubstation either cyclicallyor as required (e.g. for com-mand output). By contrast, the substation can also es-tablish a connection cycli-cally or in event-triggeredmode.

Analog or ISDN modemscan be used. A GSM modemcan also be used in the sub-station.

Several modems are sup-ported for communicationwith substations. Even if the‘standard modem’ is alreadyin use, other substations re-main accessible.

– PROFIBUS DP

PROFIBUS DP is a highlypowerful field bus protocolbased on the token passingmethod. For example, it isused for industrial automa-tion and for automating thesupply of electricity and gas.

PROFIBUS DP serves to inter-face multifunctional mea-suring instruments such asSIMEAS P (I, V, P, Q, p.f.(cos ϕ)) or, for example, toconnect ET200 componentsfor gathering messages andfor simple commands. Mes-sages, for example, can bederived from the signalingcontacts of fuse switch-disconnectors.

be adapted to the topologi-cal situation and its perfor-mance also boosted.

SICAM PAS allows use of theSICAM PAS CC process visu-alization system for centralprocess control and moni-toring.

For industrial applications, itis easy to configure an inter-face to process visualizationsystems via OPC (object link-ing and embedding forprocess control).

SICAM PAS can be config-ured as an OPC server or asan OPC client.

The SICAM PAS process vari-ables – available with theOPC server – can be readand written with OPC clientsworking either on the samedevice or on one networkedby TCP/IP. This mechanismenables, for example, com-munication with anotherprocess visualization system.

The OPC server is includedin the basic system.

The OPC client can read andwrite data from other OPCservers. Typical applicationsare data exchange with an-other SICAM PAS stationunit, and the connection ofSIMATIC programmable con-trollers.

The OPC client is available asan optional package.

 SICAM Diamond

SICAM Diamond can be usedto monitor the system inter-faces, to indicate switchingdevice states (and up-to-date measured values), andalso for further diagnosticpurposes.

SICAM Diamond features anevent list and enables the is-sue of switching commands.SICAM Diamond allows ac-cess to data with a Webbrowser (Microsoft InternetExplorer), either on thesame computer or from aWeb client.

In other words:SICAM PAS permits dataaccess with Web-basedprograms.

For simple applications thatdo not need functions liketime synchronization andfault recording transfer, etc., SIPROTEC 4 units canalso be interfaced viaPROFIBUS DP.

IEDs and substations canalso be connected withDNP V3.00 and MODBUS.

– ILSA ProtocolCommunication via the ILSAprotocol is a highlight ofSICAM PAS system. ExistingLSA central devices can beused without changing ofconfiguration on bay level.A future-proof extensionwith IEC 61850 is possible.

System control center connec-tions, distributed process con-nection and processvisualization

SICAM PAS operates on thebasis of Windows 2000,Windows XP Professionaland Windows XP Embed-ded. This means that theextensive support which2000/XP offers for moderncommunication protocols isalso available withSICAM PAS.

SICAM PAS was conceivedfor easy and fast integrationof conventional protocols.Contact Siemens if you haveany questions about inte-gration of user-specific pro-tocols.

The standardizedtelecontrol protocolsIEC 60870-5-101IEC 60870-5-104 andDNP V3.00 (which is alsoused throughout the world)are supported for the pur-pose of linking up tohigher-level system controlcenters.

Distributed process connec-tion in the substation is pos-sible thanks to the SICAMPAS Device InterfaceProcessor (DIP).

SICAM PAS can also be setup on computers networkedwith TCP/IP. Here, one com-puter performs the task ofthe so-called full server. Upto six other computers canbe used as DIPs. With thisarchitecture, the system can

Further station controlaspects

SICAM PAS features bayblocking and telecontrolblocking functions. The telecontrol blocking func-tion can also be configuredfor specific channels so as toprevent the transfer of infor-mation to one particular con-trol center during operation, while transfer continues withother control centers. The bayblocking and telecontrolblocking functions act in boththe signaling and the com-mand directions.

Channel-specific switchingauthority also makes it possi-ble to distinguish betweenlocal control (SICAM PAS CC)and remote control for theswitching direction, but alsobetween control center con-nections. Circuit-breakers canbe controlled in synchro-nized/unsynchronized mode.

Automation taskscan be configured in SICAMPAS with the CFC (ContinuousFunction Chart), which con-forms to IEC 61131. In thiseditor, tasks are configuredgraphically by wiring functionblocks. SICAM PAS comes withan extensive library of CFCfunction blocks, developedand system-tested speciallyfor energy automation.

Applications range from gen-eration of simple group indi-cations through switchinginterlocks to complex switch-ing sequences.

Redundancy

The SICAM PAS station unitcan be used in a duplicateconfiguration to further boostthe availability of the stationcontrol level (see Fig. 4). Thisduplication is possible withIEDs or substation devicesthat support simultaneouscommunication with twomasters (PROFIBUS FMS,IEC 60870-5-101) or clients(IEC 61850).

Scope of information

The amount of information tobe processed by SICAM PAS isessentially determined by thefollowing factors:

Computer network concept(multiple-computer networkor single-station system)

 Performance data of thehardware used

 Performance data of thenetwork

 Size of the database(RDBMS)

 Rate of change ofvalues

A maximum of 150 IEDs and10,000 data points can beprocessed.

Process visualizationwith SICAM PAS CC

In the operation of a substa-tion, SICAM PAS is used forconfiguration purposes and asa powerful data concentrator.SICAM PAS CC serves as theprocess visualization system.

SICAM PAS CC can be con-nected both to a SICAM PASfull server and to a SICAMPAS-DIP.

Several independent SICAMPAS CC servers can be con-nected to one SICAM PAS.Connection of redundantservers is also supported.SICAM PAS CC supports theconnection of several SICAMPAS systems.

In the signal lists, the originaltime stamps are logged in msresolution as they occur in thedevices. With every signal, aseries of additional data isalso presented to provide in-formation about causes(spontaneous, command),event sources (close range, lo-cal, remote), etc. Besides pro-cess signals, command signalsare also logged.

IndustrialX-Controls are usedto control and monitorswitchgear. These switchingdevice objects support fourdifferent forms of presenta-tion (IEC, DIN, SINAUT LSA,SICAM) for circuit-breakersand disconnectors. It is alsopossible to create bitmaps(defined for a specific project)to represent switching de-vices, and to link them to theobjects. For informative visu-alization, not only nominaland spontaneous flashing aresupported, but also the dis-play of various device andcommunication states (e.g.up-to-date/not up-to-date, bayand telecontrol blocking,etc.).

In conjunction with theSICAM PAS station unit, theswitching devices can be con-trolled either directly or with“select before operate”.

The WinCC Add-on SIMATICWeb navigator can be used forcontrol and monitoring viathe Internet.

SICAM Valpro can be used toevaluate measured and me-tered values. It not only al-lows a graphical and a tabulardisplay of archived values, butalso enables subsequent eval-uation functions such as min-ima, maxima and averages(on an hourly or daily basis).

SICAM Recpro supports auto-matic retrieval and archivingof fault recordings from pro-tection units connected withIEC 60870-5-103, PROFIBUSFMS and IEC 61850.

SICAM PAS CC is based onSIMATIC WinCC, which hasadvanced to become both theindustrial standard and themarket leader in Europe. Ithas the following impressivefeatures:

control philosophy and userinterface

The SICAM PAS user interfaceis based on customary Win-dows technology, which en-ables you to navigate in thefamiliar Windows environmentboth when configuring the sys-tem and during ongoing opera-tion.

The system distinguishes be-tween configuration and oper-ation of a substation. In SICAMPAS, these two tasks are firmlyseparated by two independentprograms.

The SICAM PAS UI – Configu-ration program is used to cre-ate and edit a project-specificconfiguration. To enhance clar-ity, four views are distin-guished:

– Configuration

– Mapping

– System topology

– Device templates

A common feature of all viewsis that they have an Explorerwindow that shows the systemconfiguration in a clearly ar-ranged tree structure. As in theWindows Explorer, you canopen individual levels of this

tree structure to work in them.Meanwhile, you can closeother levels to improve clarity.

Depending on the level you arecurrently navigating in and thecomponent you have chosen,in the context menu (rightmouse button) SICAM PAS of-fers you precisely those pro-gram functions that arecurrently appropriate.

You work through the neces-sary steps in the data windowon the right. Here, you set pa-rameters, select informationand define assignments to auser-specific, process-orientedsystem topology.

The user interface is uncompli-cated and structured accordingto the task definition, so as toenable intuitive working and tosimplify changes. The user in-terface assists the editing pro-cess by displaying parameterdescriptions and messageswhen incorrect parameters areentered.

In the tabular views for in-formation assignment andallocation to the system to-pology, configuration ismade easy by extensivesorting and filtering mecha-nisms, multiple choices andDrag & Drop.

To ensure data consistencyand to avoid redundantdata input, SICAM PAS UIprovides extensive importand export functions for theexchange of configurationdata, e.g. with the bay con-trol level and with processvisualization.
