LA MOSTRA/THE EXHIBITION
ITA

Diego is a 33 years old florentinian painter who exhibited his works in many solo and
collective national and international shows. His multi-level talent led him to be also the
founder of a publishing house, a musician and a satyrist. “Don't touch”(nol i tangere in
latin) is an imperative found both in sacred, than in profane traditions, showing the
common root of a self safeguard sense and a desired distance. From an artistic point
of view, this doesn't obviously mean to become separate from the public, which
remains the final recipient of the artworks, rather to mark a gap between the art
real ized fol lowing the market rules and the one born as an inevitable consequence of
the creative process. This intangibi l ity is the proof that, whatever it is the product, the
inspiration which was behind it was free from influences and compulsions. Of course,
no one is his own origins: everyone owes something to the past and to the context he
l ives in. This is a fundamental matter, speaking about creativity: think on Wil l iam
Blake's Child mith and the desperate try to preserve the l ink which compels us to l ive
a few years in purity and the rest of our l ife watching how the experience causes its
decay. Who are Diego's girls? That is a question which leads to other ones: how do
they born? What do they represent? They seem to peep us with their indirect and
inquiring glazes. I f we watch the exhibited paintings from the earl ier ones (2007-
2008), we can notice how the references to comic style more and more vanish, with
an accurate and narcissistic research of a sylistic perfection. Later works(2009-
201 4)are inspired by the first decades of XXth Century. That years, where intel l igence
and revolution were the key words, were fulfi l led of sensuality and were characterized
by the constant struggle against the common sense of sin and the Victorian moral
rearguards. In this sense, Diego's works references to Egon Schiele are evident. The
period in which the exhibited paintings have been realized correnspond to the present
economic crisis and the consequent col lapse of welfare. The deep signs drawn on the
girls faces are the statement of it. Their smooth and glittery skin become more and
more dark, the eyes become wrinkly and suffering. The depicted subjects are all
teenagers, but show in their bodies al l the pain and the violence we live nowadays.
This sort of implemented Dorian Gray's portrait, in which the artwork shows both the
youth and its decay made by the experience, confirms the intuition of a strong
connection with Blake work.
