• Pistons. Three-ring, aluminum alloywhich are cam-ground, tapered andcooled by oil spray.

Advanced Modular Cooling System(AMOCS). Improves cooling capabilitiesby using a parallel flow system with10 cores. Serviceability is improvedwith AMOCS as there is no top tankto remove.

3 Electronically Controlled CaterpillarPlanetary Power Shift Transmission.Features perimeter-mounted, largediameter clutch packs that control inertiafor smooth shifting and increasedcomponent life. It can be recalibratedusing the Electronic Technician (ET)Service Tool.

• Parking Brake. Is spring-applied, oil-released and dry disc. It is mounted onthe transmission transfer gear outputshaft. Manual override is possible toallow movement of the machine.

4 Impeller Clutch Torque Converter.Combined with the Rimpull ControlSystem (RCS) allows the operatormaximum flexibility in modulatingrimpull.

• The torque converter is equippedwith a standard lock-up clutch fordirect drive efficiency.

• Improved calibration procedure

• Improved left pedal modulation

• Compensates for wear by providingthe ability to recalibrate for optimumleft pedal modulation regardless oftorque converter wear

• Left pedal control allows the operatorto reduce rimpull from 100 percentto 20 percent while maintaining highengine speed for slower work withoutlosing power. After 20 percent, furtherpedal travel applies the brake.

• RCS allows the operator to selectfrom four preset rimpull settings(low, medium, high and maximum).

5 Heavy-Duty Axles. Feature optional axleoil coolers, permanently lubed universaljoints and stronger axle components inboth the differentials and final drives forincreased performance, serviceabilityand durability. Conventional differentialis standard.

• Final Drives. Feature planetary reductionat each wheel. Torque is developed atthe wheel, which gives less stress at theaxle shafts. The planetary units are oil-

bath lubricated and can be removedindependently from the wheels andbrakes. Ring gears are spleened to theaxle housing. Proprietary gear cuttingand head treating methods are used inthe manufacturing and bronze thrustwashers interface with the sun gear/bearing retainer.

• Free-Floating Axle Shafts. Can beremoved independent of the wheelsand planetaries for quick and easyserviceability.

• Optional Axle Oil Cooling System.Features two circuits that circulate oilfrom the differentials through an oil-to-air cooler and a filter back to the brakes.This system provides increased oil lifeand improves component performanceand durability. The system automaticallyturns on and off at a preset oil temperature.

6 Axle-Shaft, Oil Disk Brakes. Areadjustment-free, fully hydraulic andcompletely sealed. Disc face groovesprovide cooling, even when brakesare applied, for a long, fade-resistantservice life.

• Location of the brakes improvesserviceability. The axle-shaft brakedesign allows brake service whileleaving the final drive intact.

• Axle-shaft brakes require less forceby operating on the low torque sideof the axle. Combined with improvedaxle oil circulation for increasedcooling, the oil-enclosed, multiple-disc brake design improves durability.

• Service Brakes. Are four wheel,hydraulic, oil dipped multiple discbrakes that are adjustment-free,completely enclosed and allowmodulated engagement withoutslack adjusters.

• Secondary Brakes. Are fully modulatedand the front and rear service brakecircuits are isolated so one circuitcan operate if pressure drops in theother circuit.

1 Electro-Hydraulic Control System.Increases hydraulic efficiency andenhances operator comfort through low-effort fingertip controls. XT-3and XT-5 hose combine with reliablecomponents to help reduce the riskof leaks and blowing lines.

2 Blade Control. A floor mountedsingle-lever, fingertip control forlift/lower/tilt/tip sends electronic signalsto a main hydraulic valve positionedoutside the cab. This eliminates sound,heat and control effort associated within-cab hydraulic valve systems.

3 Load Sensing Steering. With the STICcontrol system, integrates steering andtransmission into a single controller.The steering system utilizes a variabledisplacement pump for maximummachine performance by directingpower through the steering systemonly when needed.

Features. Include center-point framearticulation, front and rear wheeltracking and floor-mounted andadjustable armrests for a full rangeof comfort adjustments.

Caterpillar Monitoring System(EMS-III). Continually monitors variousmachine systems through three instrumentclusters and provides a three-levelwarning system to alert the operator ofimmediate or pending problems. It sharesinformation with the engine, hydraulicand transmission controls that can beused during servicing to simplify serviceand troubleshooting. The CaterpillarMonitoring System allows for newsoftware to be uploaded in the cab.

Demand Fan. Is a speed controlled,hydraulic fan that provides maximumcooling efficiency by directing theappropriate amount of power throughthe fan system based on coolanttemperature.

Structure Construction. Combines the useof robotic welding on up to 90 percentof the 834G while castings in severalareas to increase strength by helping tospread the loads and reduce the numberof parts. This provides highly consistentwelds with deep plate penetration andexcellent plate fusion. The benefit isincreased durability and fatigue strength.The computer controlled machiningensures the alignments of pin bore, axlepad, cab mount and transmission/enginecomponents.

1 Box-Section Engine End-Frame.Is designed to resist twisting andtorsional forces and to provide asolid foundation for axles, engineand transmission.

2 Two-Plate Front Frame. Providesmaximum structural strength duringdozing applications for improved stability.

3 Spread-Hitch Design. Is largeand improves load distribution byreducing loads to the hitch bearings.The large center hitch design improveshydraulic line routing and makes serviceaccess easier.

Upper and Lower Hitch Pins. Pivot ondouble-tapered roller bearings. Box-stylesections in the hitch pins and crossmember assembly improve strengthof the frame structure.

Engine and Transmission Mounts. Use arubber, mushroomed, cup-shaped designto reduce noise and vibration.

Frame Design. Straight side rail designimproves torsional strength, shock loadabsorption and frame alignment. It isspecifically designed with fewer partsto improve quality and reliability.

(112 ft3) of volume incorporatesinnovations for operator comfort,maneuverability and productivity.Features include outstanding viewingarea, improved cab ventilation, interiorsound levels below 77 dB(A), standardcoat hook, cup holder, storage bin,intermittent wet-arm wipers, room for alarge lunch cooler and radio-readiness.

1 STIC Control System. Combines gearselection and steering into one controllever that requires less effort andprovides smooth shifting. Side-to-sidemotions for steering, finger operateddirection control and thumb operatedbuttons for gear selection combine toprovide a fluid motion that reduceseffort and allows the operator to workthe machine for long periods of timewith little or no fatigue.

2 Left Pedal. Operates the ImpellerClutch Torque Converter. Within thefirst one and a half inches of pedaltravel, rimpull can be controlledfrom 100 percent to 20 percent.Fully depressing the pedal appliesthe brake. The right pedal allowsstandard braking.

3 Comfort Series Seat. With airsuspension and retractable seat beltis designed for increased comfort andsupport. Seat cushions reduce pressureon the lower back and thighs whileallowing increased arm and legmovement.

4 Electro-Hydraulic Blade Controls.Are adjustable fore and aft, with aheight-adjustable armrest so operatorsof any size can find a comfortableposition. Single lever control allowsoperator to control blade functions:lift/lower, tip and tilt.

5 Tilt/Tip Switch. Allows operators toselect tilt or tip control for dozing.

6 Caterpillar Monitoring System (EMS-III). Provides information onthe machine’s major componentsand systems.

• Gauges display fuel tank level andtemperatures for engine coolant,power train and hydraulic oil.The tachometer is an analoggauge with digital readout forgear selection and ground speed.

• The main module consists of tenfault indicators and one displaypanel. Alerts occur for engine oilpressure, parking brake status,brake oil pressure, charging system,coolant flow status, hydraulic filterstatus, steering pressure, axle oiltemperature, engine overspeed,machine hours, digital enginespeed, odometer and faults.

• Alerts the operator if transmissionis engaged while parking brake isapplied or if pressure drops, thebrake is applied.

7 Throttle Lock. Allows the operator topre-set the engine speed for a varietyof applications, resulting in faster cycletimes and increased productivity.

8 Rimpull Control System (RCS). Has fourfactory preset rimpull settings (low,medium, high and maximum) to bettermatch ground conditions.

9 Autoshift. Allows the operator toset the maximum gear into which thetransmission will be allowed to shift.This feature allows additional comfortand focus on the job. The switch alsooffers a manual position for operatorcontrolled shifting.

10 Lock-Up Clutch Torque ConverterSwitch. Activates lock-up clutch fordirect drive efficiency.

11 Front and Rear Window Wiper/Washers. Are within easy reach tomaintain a clear field of vision.
