Evonik expands services to increase support to manufacturers of PU foamsEvonik gets together with manufacturers to announce new services to adapt the foams to the new standards laid down by ABNT - Brazilian Technical Standards Association for the manufacturing of mattresses.

Evonik has expanded its South American Technical Center for Polyurethanes by purchasing new equipment and providing services to help PU foam formulators adjust their foams to the new ABNT standards (ABNT NBR 13579-1 and ABNT NBR 13579-2ABNT) concerning the manufacture of mattresses. These new standards will be mandatory as of August, 2013. The new equipment will allow clients to accurately reproduce their production process. The ability to conduct tests with foams using conventional equipment (box) and cylindrical molds will be crucial to meet the new requirements. Sampling and testing of the foams can also be done on-site to identify the best formulation to meet the demands of the new standards. Evonik held an event to announce the expansion of its platform of technical services in the Le Blanc location in Americana, state of São Paulo. Approximately 150 customers were present, consisting of at least one customer from each South American country. The group included a large number of key accounts and all of the Evonik South American distributors and agents, representing 60% of the regional PU industry. The event offered technical lectures, a visit to the new laboratory, tutorial videos and a

SILPASTThis line of pigments are dispersed and ground in “Silicone Fluid”, and should be used in the coloring of rubber and silicone fl uid.

ASTA QUÍMICA was founded in june of 1988, initially known as Asta Tintas Especiais (Asta Special Paints), started as a producer of pigment pastes used for the coloration of polyurethane soles, PVC and paints. Thru the time, the company invested in technology, starting its business in other markets like: industrial paints, decorative paints, furniture paints, automotive paints and polyurethane pieces, toys, adhesives and polyurethane foams. Nowadays, our products are used in: PVC emulsion, foam and molded pieces of polyurethane, water based paints, artifi cial leather, technical pieces of polyurethane, polyurethane systems, high performance solvent based paints, silicone, gelcoat (polyester resin), epoxy, polyurea, and others.

SPECIALITY The ASTA QUÍMICA has two laboratories. Air Plast is primarily engaged in PET – polyethylene terephthalate micronizing, and in its use as a raw material in polyurethane foam industry, as well as blends with other resins. Based on advanced research, with ecological conscience, Air Plast developed a PET polymer micronizing process, which was adjusted in terms of rheology to be used as a component in polyurethane foam formulations, with the objective of reducing costs and GHG emission in the productive process (in several densities, it replaces part of the polyol). Air Plast also produces basic PET polyester polyol applied in polyurethane foams formulations such as molded, rigid, structural and others. The company introduced into the market:• PET based TPU – this thermoplastic polyurethane, with excellent mechanical resistance, can be used in many markets: shoes, hydraulic hoses, electrical wire and cabling, etc.• Copolymer to flexible foams – this product replaces the conventional copolymer, and it can be applied in steering whell, surf boards, fi lters, automotive parts, etc.All these new technologies offers reduced costs and excellent performance.

Benefits of use:• Reduction of production costs• Ecological sustainability• Less gas emissions in the production process

ProductsMicronized PETPolyurethane foams may include micronized PET with the benefi ts of reducing production costs and the emission of pollutants, keeping the same mechanical properties in accordance with the technical rules governing the sector. TM 40 micronized PET, in extremely low particle size, is used as a component in several densities polyurethane foams, replacing parts of the polyol by weight, ranging from 10% to 40%, according to the required density. Thus, the micronized PET interacts with the other components, becoming part of the foam formulation. This means that it doesn´t have either the “fi ller” action or behaviour, but keeps the same mechanical properties required by the law. It leaves no ash content. The product is supplied with a polymer nanoparticle percentage.

Airpol T400 Polyester PolyolIn line with the global trend of new composites products search and sustainability with production costs reduction, Air Plast developed AIRPOL T400. PET polyester polyol is obtained through a polymer depolymerization process, held in reactors, which resulted in a product with the same chemical properties of a conventional polyester polyol. The result is a high miscible polyol, compatible with various types of MDIs, with a hydroxyl number around 200 to 250 KOH/g (this rate can range from 60 to 450, according to the need) and viscosity between 2000 and 5000 CPs. The material can be satisfactorily used in rigid, semi-rigid, molded, injected foams, as in other blends.
