headings issued by LC during the past year as an experimen tal project. While something of this sort on a smaller scale

was attempted a few years back in this column, I do not believe a year's cumulation has ever been done. At time of publication, the last eight lists were not yet available, so the compilation only includes lists 1 -42. In addition, certain cate gories have been omitted to make the list manageable: head ings with new national or racial qualifiers (e.g., Ethnic archi tecture, Russian German), individual works of art or architecture; groups of artists, and awards. While it is recognized that new headings are encountered

in the normal course of cataloging, there is value to having prior knowledge of the choices available in the field, to aid in

speedy categorical judgments. Also, the complexity of the syndetic structure makes oversights reasonably easy to com mit. In addition, knowing the kinds and number of changes which are constantly being made helps ward off the tempta tion to rely on memory overly much, which would otherwise be a practical and time-saving aid.
