The objective of an engine air intake filtration system is to eliminate solid particles from reaching the engine while stillallowing sufficient air for efficient combustion of the fuel. A naturally aspirated engine can use over 15,000 gallons ofclean air for every gallon of fuel burned, while a turbocharged engine needs 20-24% more !Contaminated air will reduce combustion efficiency and, in turn, increase lube oil contamination resulting in increasedwear to the valves, rings, pistons, cylinders, cylinder walls and crankshaft bearings
Inefficient combustion of the fuel will also increase the level of emissions released and increase the fuel consumed.
Engine operating costs will increase - and engine life will decrease - in direct proportion to the amount of dirtallowed to get past the air filtration system. A teaspoon of dirt is enough to cause engine wear ...a handful candestroy the engine!

The air intake system is made up of two main assemblies - the air cleaner system that cleans the incomingair, and the induction system that carries the clean air to the engine’s turbo, blower or intake manifold.
Design and application selection is determined by the envi-ronment that the machine is going to work in. The systembelow illustrates a typical medium to heavy duty applicationfound on most off highway equipment.
Filter facts to rememberDirty filters reduce power
Dirty filters increase fuel consumption
Dirty filters create emissions
Dirty filters raise operating costs
Simple air inlet hooddesigned to reduce theamount of rain, snow andlarge pieces of debris fromentering the air intake of theair cleaner..
Static bowl type.Removes up to 50% ofSAE Course.
Angled intake louver plates and a rotor direct contaminant to an ejector port. Can remove up to 97% of contaminant depending on application.
EnginairePrecleaner
Precleaners and air cleaner assemblies for all types of Industrial, Construction, Landcare & Agriculture equipment.........plus, replacement air elements for air cleaners and cab filters.
Standard designs incorporate a primary element, an optional safety element and an internal dust ejection device. (see diagram on page5) Air is drawn into the air cleaner housing through the inlet tube by the vacuum of the engine. The incoming air is then caused to travelin a circular path by either a tangential inlet configuration or by angled fins on the primary element (in some models these fins are fixedto the inner wall of the housing). Up to 50% of the incoming contaminant is forced to the outer wall of the housing and is expelledthrough the ejector valve. (This valve opens and closes with the pulse of the the engine) The incoming air is then filtered as it passesthrough the pleated paper element (s). Clean air then exits through the outlet tube to the ducting system leading to the intake manifold orturbo charger.
Primary Element Usually manufactured using pleated cellulose (paper) media combined with binding agents and additives to hold the fibers in a pre-determined pattern and to resist moisture. The primary element eliminates in excess of 98% of contaminant from reaching the engine.Measurement is usually stated in terms of efficiency over the life of the element following an SAE prescribed procedure. (SAE J726) Efficiency will vary depending on filter media used by the manufacturer.Usually 100% of the contaminant that gets through the primary element will occur during the first 10% of the elements life. Filter media is the least efficient when new and becomes more efficient as particles ‘plug’ the passageways through the layers of paper or synthetic fibre. As the filter element becomes more efficient the restriction increases as less air is allowed through.
Safety Element The primary function of the safety element is to protect the engine if a rupture of the primary element should occur due to faulty element construction or contaminant overload..The safety element also protects the engine from contaminant migration during the replacement of the primary element. The safety element should remain in place for 3-5 primary element changes.
Ejector Valve Most air cleaners direct air through the housing in a circular path through the use ofdiagonal fins either attached to the element or attached internally to the housing. This causes particles to accumulate at the opposite end to the air inlet of the cleaner housing. The engine pulse will cause the ejector valve to open and close dispelling this accumulated contaminant.
Enginaire Air Cleaners are available with either external or internal ejector valves.
Restriction Gauge Air elements should be changed when the air intake systems restriction reaches the engine manufacturers maximum allowable restriction. This is usually between 18 and 30 inches ofwater and is measured by a restriction gauge located at the outlet end of the air cleaner assembly.

How The System Works
Precleaners and air cleaner assemblies for all types of Industrial, Construction, Landcare & Agriculture equipment.........plus, replacement air elements for air cleaners and cab filters.
Designed to remove up to 97% of the contaminant's from the air drawn into the air induction system by the engineresulting in extended filter life. Enginaire precleaners are available in heavy duty Aluminum and stainless steel construction for highenvironments such as mining, construction and forestry. Enginaire precleaners are also available in a low-cost composite materialfor applications where exposure to damage is minimal.
Enginaire precleaners extend filter life and and air cleaner maintenance intervals up to 10 times.
Extended filter life equals:
• Improved fuel economy: as the filter gets dirty and restriction increases and combustion efficiency is reduced.
• Extended oil filter life: reduces the amount of contaminant the oil filter has to trap
• Reduced emissions: combustion efficiency decreases as air is restricted from passing through the filter. The longer a
filter stays ‘clean’ the longer combustion efficiency is maintained.
• INCREASED ENGINE LIFE
How they workThe vacuum created by the engine powers the Enginaire precleaner.
Incoming air is drawn through the angled louver plates (1) which direct
the intake air to turn the stainless steel rotor (2) which is mounted on dual
precision ground heavy duty bearings. The centrifugal force caused by the
spinning motion of the rotor separates the contaminant's from the air,
throwing them to the inner perimeter of the cover (3) and expelling them
out through the discharge port (4). The clean air is drawn into the plenum
chamber (5) and then into the engine (6).

ENGINAIRE CLEAN AIR SYSTEMS THE AIR FILTRATION SYSTEM
Precleaners and air cleaner assemblies for all types of Industrial, Construction, Landcare & Agriculture equipment.........plus, replacement air elements for air cleaners and cab filters.8
How itworks:1. Contaminated air enters the precleaner stage through a 360 degreeangled louvers.2. The dynamic precleaner ejects up to 97% of the contaminantentering the pre-cleaner. The centrifugal force caused by the spinningmotion of the rotor separates the contaminant's from the air, throw-ing them to the inner perimeter of the cover and ejected through thepre-cleaners exit point.3. Air is forced to enter the housing in a circular pattern causing upto 50% of the remaining dirt particles to follow the inner wall of theair cleaner housing and be dispelled by the ejector valve 4.5. Clean air passes through the filter element to the outlet tube to theengine.
See VLR-RETRO Kits

cleaners on Page 22
The Enginaire patented VLR (Very low Restriction) Air Filter System combines a standard air cleaner with theindustries most efficient precleaner to remove up to 97% of contamination from the intake air prior to entering the airfilter housing.
The internal static pre-cleaner removes up to 50% of the remaining contaminant. The initial restriction of the VLRsystem is lower than that of a standard air cleaner and exposes more filter media directly to incoming dirty air.
Lower operating costs• Increased filter life (up to 20 times reported)
• Extended service intervals• Fewer filter elements used• Increased fuel economy• Less labor spent changing filters• LONGER ENGINE LIFE

Precleaners and air cleaner assemblies for all types of Industrial, Construction, Landcare & Agriculture equipment.........plus, replacement air elements for air cleaners and cab filters.
An engines performance - and cost of operation - is impacted by the air intake system’s efficiency more than anything else.Select the air cleaner best suited for the working environment. Use a design with a safety element whenever possible. Do not use anair cleaner just because it ‘fits’. And remember: over spec’ing an air cleaner will increase the life of the filter elements and result inlower operating costs.
The lower the air cleaners initial restriction the longer the maintenance intervals.
There are various air cleaner design options available from Enginaire:
• Model FW-E1* Horizontal or vertical mount, plastic body, single element with dust ejector• Model FW-E2 * Same as FW-E1 except with safety element• Model EN-E1* Horizontal or vertical mount, metal body, single element with dust ejector• Model EN-E2* Same as EN-E11 except with safety element• Model VLR-E1 Horizontal or vertical mount, integrated dynamic pre-cleaner, single element with dust ejector• Model VLR-E2 Same as VLR-1 except with safety element
* can be fitted with an Enginaire precleaner to increase efficiency and element life.
When selecting the correct air cleaner system you need to know:1. Engine airflow requirement2. Machine or truck working environment3. Mounting configuration
Air filter element life is measured by restriction. Most engine manufacturers set a minimum allowable restriction - the initial restric-tion of the system - and a maximum allowable restriction - the point when the engine’s performance is severely affected. The air fil-ter element should be changed at this point. A restriction gauge should be used to determine when the maximum allowable restric-tion is reached.Element life is the time it takes to reach the Maximum Allowable Restriction.
A filter element may ‘look’ dirty when, in fact, it has many hours of usable life left.
The following procedure should be used to select the correct air cleaner.
A. Determine Engine air flow Requirements from Enginaire Engine Specifications Guide or by the following method.
1. Example: Cummins 4BT3.9 @ 2500 RPM = 253 CFM2. If the engine you are using is not listed use the following formulae to determine airflow required:
Air Flow (CFM) = Engine Displacement (cu.in.) x RPM x VE 1728 CF
RPM = Engine revolutions per minuteCFM = Cubic Feet Per Minute
CF = Cycle Factor a) 4 cycle diesel or gasoline engine = 2.b) 2 cycle diesel or gasoline engine = 1
VE = Volumetric Efficiency a) Naturally aspirated diesel or gasoline engine = .85b) Supercharged (blower) engine = 1.2c) Turbocharged diesel engine = 1.4d) Turbo charged / after cooled = 1.85

B. Calculate overall air induction system restriction.Determine Component Restriction total(CR):
90’ elbow add 0.6” H2O45’ elbow add 0.5” H2ORain hat add 0.5” H2OPreCleaner add 1.0” H2O
C. Determine Engine Manufacturer’s maximum allowable air cleaner system Initial Restriction at air flow required (MXIR).This information is available from engine specification data. If this is not available use 10” H2O as maximum initial restriction for thecomplete air induction system.
MXIR minus CR = MAR @ airflow requiredEngine manufacturer recommended Maximum Initial Restriction (MXIR), less total Component Restriction (CR),equals the allowable Air Cleaner Maximum Initial Restriction (MAR) @ airflow required.
Example: Using the Cummins 4.BT3.9 : 253CFM @ 10”H2O MXIR - 2” CR = 253CFM @ 8”H2O Restriction
D. Determine working environment and select air cleaner series.

Air CleanerChange filter elements by restriction only. Use a restriction gauge set to the engine manufacturer’s recommended system restriction limits.
General guideline for popular diesel engines:Detroit Diesel NA 25” H2O / 6.2 kPa
T 20” H2O / 5 kPaCNG 20” H2O / 5 kPa
Caterpillar NA 30” H2O / 7.5 kPaT 30” H2O / 7.5 kPaCNG 15” H2O / 3.7 kPa
Cummins NA 20” H2O / 5 kPaT 25” H2O / 6.2 kPaCNG 15” H2O / 3.7 kPa
It’s important to remember that a filter element may look dirty when, in fact, it has many hours oflife left. Coarse material tends to sit on the surface of the media but does not plug the passage ways within the media. This coarse material can actually add to the filters efficiency. As the restriction increases so does the efficiency. At the time an air filter element reaches its maximum recommended restriction it is the most efficient. When removing the primary filter element be careful not to dislodge dirt as it only takes a teaspoon to cause catastrophic engine damage.Safety elements, usually found in air cleaners operating in extreme environments, should only be replaced after 3 - 5 primary element changes. The safety protects against primary element failure and dirt migration to the ‘clean’ side of the system during primary element changes.Thoroughly wipe the inside of the housing before replacing the elements
Caution: Do not ‘wash’ air filter elements. Filters are cellulose fibers specifically formulated for optimum air filtration while allowing air to pass through the media. Subjecting them to water can change the fibre ‘lay’and either increase restriction or open up passageways that will allow dirt to pass readily into the engine.
An engine failure is not worth the risk!
Check each new element for external damage, gasket quality and seating compatibility. External damage to the element may indicate a hidden tear in the media or affect the elements ability to seal tightly. If the element does not seal against the air cleaner base and cover, or against the internal radial sealing surface,do not use.If the air cleaner has a dust ejector make sure it is not cracked or missing. Replace if in doubt.
Induction SystemHaving an effective air cleaner is only as good as the piping system on the clean side of the air cleaner. Check all hoses, tubes, clamps, etc. to make sure all are sealed 100%. Replace cracked and worn rubber Components, loose clamps, etc.
System Maintenance
An air cleaner is useless if the ducting to the engine is not sealed!

Precleaner Selection
IMPORTANT!The precleaner must be selected according to the Minimum / Maximum CFM Range noted in the precleaner specifications table.
Follow these steps:1. Determine engine air flow requirements. (see section 00 for engine airflow listing)2. If the engine you are looking for is not listed use the formulae below to determine engine air flow.3. Using the CFM Range select the precleaner required.4. Measure the O.D. of the air cleaner air inlet tube.5. If the selected precleaners’ outlet I.D. does not match the inlet O.D. of the air cleaner select the appropriate adapterfrom the adapter section of the Product Guide. A variety of extension tubes are also available if a remote mount isrequired.
Air Flow (CFM) = Engine Displacement (cu.in.) x RPM x VE 1728 CF
RPM = Engine revolutions per minuteCFM = Cubic Feet Per MinuteCF = Cycle Factor: a) 4 cycle diesel or gasoline engine = 2.
b) 2 cycle diesel or gasoline engine = 1VE = Volumetric Efficiency: a) Naturally aspirated diesel or gasoline engine = .85
b) Supercharged (blower) engine = 1.2c) Turbocharged diesel engine = 1.4
Enginaire precleaners are designed to remove most of the contaminant's from the air that feeds the engine. The advantages of removing these contaminants are extended filter life, improved fuel economy, reduced emis-sions, and extended filter life - AND LONGER ENGINE LIFE.
The Enginaire precleaner is designed to operate at a maximum contaminant rejection efficiency with minimum airrestriction allowing for optimum engine performance.
Turbochargers, blowers, cylinder liners, piston rings and engine oil fail because of contamination.
There is an Enginaire precleaner available to fit virtually all engine applications.

Precleaner Installation - Adaptation
Enginaire precleaners can be installed in virtually anyplane; horizontal, vertical, transverse or parallel. In mostcases, it is a simple matter of removing an existing raincap, dust bowl or other style precleaner.
Installation Tips• Locate away from heavy contamination concentrations.
• Use rubber elbows to keep restriction at a minimum.
• When installing outside the engine compartment make sure the discharge
port is directed away from operator position and facing opposite to direction
of vehicle travel.
• Always allow a minimum of 3” between the angled louvered base and the
engine cover to avoid restricting air flow.
• Locate precleaner a minimum of 12” below any exhaust outlet to ensure
that the air cleaner does not ingest engine exhaust.
• Installations located under the engine cover or hood should be made with
the discharge port directed downward.
• Use duct tape as a ‘gasket’ on the air cleaner intake tube to ensure an air
tight seal.
• Install with a twisting motion onto the intake tube.
• No more than 10-15 pounds of torque on the precleaner clamp should be
applied to avoid damage to the air inlet tube.
Remember: It is important to have a good seal between the precleaner and the air
cleaner intake tube.
Common aspirated precleaners are (A) the Donaspin™ and (B&C) the STBStrata® pictured above. Simply remove the existing precleaner assembly andfit a correctly sized Enginaire precleaner over the existing air inlet tube. Inthe case of (C) use an STB cone adapter. (see next page)

Step 1. Remove precleaner section (B) of air cleaner.
Step 2. Measure diameter of the precleaner section (B) that hasbeen removed. Select adapter to fit in its place. Check the engine CFMrequirements to ensure the adapter is suitable for the required pre-cleaner.
Step 3. Attach the Enginaire adapter to the filter section (A) usingthe existing clamp. (For the SBG Series turn the filter housing 180degrees)
Step 4. Select and install the correctly sized precleaner (C). Oncecompleted the air cleaner can be mounted in a vertical or horizontalposition.
Air cleaners - such as Donaldson SBG, STG series - that use small diameter tubes to preclean the incoming air require constantmonitoring and frequent cleaning (manufacturers provide a special brush for this purpose). This results in high maintenance costsor, if not maintained, a high rate of filter replacement or element failure due to overloading.Enginaire adapters allow for the removal of the tubes and the installation of a highly efficient and maintenance free precleaner.
These adapters will fit both peripheral and tubular air inlet configurations.
