Administrators will learn how to proactively develop a climate that promotes feelings of trust, respect, and confidentiality. They will also learn how to predict and deal with other’s difficult behavior. In addition, multiple opportunities will be provided throughout the course for participants to practice using questioning and listening strategies to resolve conflict and to prepare for confrontations. Administrators who evaluate teachers must demonstrate a high rate of inter-rater reliability, and communicate evaluation outcomes in constructive and supportive ways. Administrators who evaluate teachers must also recognize and control for bias when conducting an evaluation and determining results. School districts in Illinois must provide professional development to administrators to strengthen these skills on a sustained basis. This course focuses on Domains 2 and 3, and is intended to move administrators who have passed the ISBE evaluator training, and who are very familiar with Charlotte Danielson’s 2011/2013 Framework for Teaching, from compliance to competency. This course requires participants to view teaching, record data according to the Professional Practice rubric, and participate in mock evaluation conferences as evaluator, teacher, or observer. Participants will also be expected to have a high degree of inter-rater reliability when they determine final rating based on the evidence gathered during the observations.

This course focuses on assessment literacy for the instructional leader as Illinois districts transition to the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) and assessments from the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC). Participants will improve their ability to use appropriate assessments for designated purposes, analyze current student assessment in their schools, understand high-quality assessments that measure deeper learning, and recognize and avoid common pitfalls when supporting the use of assessment data. Two key questions structure the course: “What constitutes a high-quality assessment?” and “What are we learning from assessment data, and how can we use it to support improved student learning?” To achieve these goals, participants will engage in two face-to-face sessions and an interactive discussion with teachers.
