The Three Little Pigs is a very popular fairytale that every-body has heard in their child-hood. It’s the kind of story that sticks in our minds and can often be applied to everyday situations in many unexpected ways.

Who’s afraid of the big bad wolf? Big bad wolf, big bad wolf? Who’s afraid of the big bad wolf?

El cuento de los tres cerdi-tos es una de esas historias que todos, de una u otra for-ma, hemos oído en nuestra infancia. Una de esas his-torias que permanecen en nuestros recuerdos y que no sabemos muy bien porqué permite explicar muchas co-sas de las que nos pasan.

Hay quien se queda en la epidermis de la narración y sólo verá a tres cerditos can-tando y bailando en el bos-que acechados por un lobo. Hay quien vagamente recor-dará la lección infantil de la fábula. Ya saben, para poder disfrutar de la vida, primero hay que esforzarse, bien sea construyendo una casa, o desarrollando un producto o un mueble que responda “con solidez” a la necesidad para la que ha sido concebido.

Some people see no further than the surface of the story and imagine three little pigs singing and dancing in the woods with the big bad wolf lurking nearby.

And many will barely recall the moral of the story: if you want to enjoy life and be successful, first you have to work hard, whether that means building a house or doing your homework or, why not, designing a “sturdy” product or piece of furniture which responds to the need for which it was conceived.

But every story can be in-terpreted under a different light and the Three Little Pigs is no exception. To our way of thinking, it is a fable about the value of materials. About the capital importance of features when comparing two materials for a specific purpose. And, obviously, just how important quality and ef-ficiency can be when using these materials. That said, we shouldn’t forget that this is a fairytale and despite the different versions down through the years, the first publications date from the 18th century.

Claro que siempre hay una lectura más profunda en toda historia. Y los 3 cerditos no es una excepción. Para nosotros es una fábula sobre el valor de los materiales. La impor-tancia de las prestaciones de un material frente a otro, en una situación concreta. Y, por supuesto, de la cali-dad y la eficiencia en el uso de éstos. Eso sí, no nos ol-videmos que se trata de un cuento infantil y que, a pesar de las diferentes versiones del mismo que nos han lle-gado, sus primeras edicio-nes datan del siglo XVIII.

Things have changed a lot since then, but the spirit of the fable is essentially the same. Nonetheless, some of its ideas need to be re-vamped and updated, see-ing as houses are no longer built just of bricks, and less so with sticks or straw, or at least not for the moment. At the time nobody thought of implementing concepts%or values as we prefer to call them%such as sustainability or environmental friendliness.
