Pollution exists in various forms such as the one produced by human metabolism or by constitutive housing materials.

Humidity: a determining factor for a healthy building and for healthy occupants.

In liquid or vapour form, water appears as the first cause of problems in the building sector. Small quantities of vapour are enough to cause a direct and indirect effect on the occupants health and on the building. If a relative moisture ranging between 40 and 60 % is essential to the correct functioning of the respiratory system, then too much moisture turns out to be harmful for the building and occupants.

In new or thermally renovated buildings, the lack of ven-tilation associated with insulation and reinforced sealing, can cause important damage by moisture: condensation on the cold bridges, glazing on the vapour-guard of insu-lator, and deterioration of the insulator in the walls.

The excess of moisture mainly comes from human acti-vity: water vapour produced by breathing and evapora-tion from domestic activities (washing, cooking, drying clothes etc…), and even a great quantity of indoor plants contribute to raise the inner humidity rate.

A high relative moisture of the interior air increases the risk of infes-

tation by dust mites and creates condensations on cold zones and

surfaces, these are predisposing factors for fungal and bacterial pro-

liferation. So certain viruses and bacteria, once released by humans or

animals, do not survive a long time in the air, whilst others can remain

for months and even years on wet surfaces.

Dust mites can proliferate only under optimal conditions of heat and

moisture necessary for their developement: 24°C and 75% of relative hu-

midity. A fall of the water content of only 5 % divides by six the number of

dust mites. They disappear with a relative moisture lower than 45 %.

Moulds, other micro-organisms, represent more than 100.000 various

species of microscopic mould. The metabolism of moistures generates an

important quantity of very odorous volatile organic compounds (VOC).

Also the deterioration of materials related to the excess of moisture in-

creases the toxic emissions, and needs to be considered.

It is thus necessary to control effectively the relative humidity rate

in housing by an efficient ventilation which takes it into account, in

order to stabilise it in a range of comfort and health for people, in a

level between 40 and 50 % of relative humidity.

VOC: dangerous pollutants

Several studies carried out in the world show that, especially when

ventilation is failing, many pollutants are present in our housing, at

thresholds quite higher than existing standards and WHO recommen-

dations. Products in question: painting, wallpapers, vitrifying products,

laminated floor covering, polishes, aerosol bombs, kerosene stoves, per-

fumes, etc.

We often associate pollution with poor quality of the surrounding air of

industrial and automobile origin. It becomes necessary to examine the

air quality of the place where we are staying more than half of time, i.e.

our housing. It is sometimes regrettable to note that the environment in

the house is seldom on the front page of the media, whereas its impact

on health is even more important than that of the external environment.

Carbon dioxide (CO2)

Its presence in housing is mainly due to the activity of human brea-

thing; studies showed that its emission is most of the time accompa-

nied by water vapour emissions. A person emits on average 19 l/h of

CO2 by breathing.

Among the various pollutants met in housing and with various degree

of danger, let us quote carbon monoxide (CO produced by systems

of heating and gas cooking, nicotine), radon, asbestos, oxides of ni-

trogen (NOx) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), without forgetting tobacco

and bio-contaminants (dust mites, microbes, mould, etc.).

There is only one solution to evacuate all these pollutants:

To ventilate. A vital need, an essential requirement for good

health.

So as respect the new thermal and acoustic require-ments for buildings for housing, new constructions and the renovations are characterised by an enve-loppe with the reinforced insulation and sealing (2), whereas the old constructions are generally «over-ven-tilated» (1) due to windows and outside walls with leak and bad insulation.

As main thermal issues have been solved compared to previous old constructions (1), new problems have ap-peared. In new building and refurbishments, when ven-tilation is absent or insufficient, the new air cannot enter anymore, which generates directly visible problems: Air quality decreases (2) and the excess humidity condenses on the coldest part of the dwelling.

It is thus necessary to recreate openings to recreate an air circulation in housing: To overcome obstacles it is neces-sary to recreate a ventilation circuit:

Fresh new air will be brought into the least polluted rooms and polluted air must be extracted through wet rooms.

The steps are as follows:

- to place air inlets in habitable rooms to introduce air into the dwelling,

- to ensure the introduction of the air inside the dwel-ling by leaving sufficient gap under interior doors,

- to place grilles or extract units connected to a ver-tical / horizontal duct or to a fan, in wet rooms (kit-chen, bathroom and toilets). Those will ensure the extraction of the air (the air is able to enter by the habitable rooms only because it is extracted in wet rooms).

«Ventilate Right»

This is the concept that directs the design of the Aereco products. So

the « passive » components of the ventilation system are controlled and

activated in various ways, according to the needs in each room, each

occupation. 4 principal action modes are distinguished:

Humidity sensitive airflow, created by Aereco in 1984

Manually activated airflow

Airflow activated by the presence detection sensor

Airflow activated by the movement detection sensor

Note: «passive» indicates here the components of the network not generating any

mechanical energy to ensure ventilation, but simply acting on a bypass section to

impose a flow. Fans are known as « active » components.

Humidity sensitive airflow

Principle: Air cross section modulated according to the local relative hu-

midity rate.

As detector and motor of the humidity sensitive products, the V8 sensor

exploits a well-known physical phenomenon: the property of some fa-

brics to lengthen when humidity increases in the air and to shorten itself

when the humidity level is lower. On this principle, the 8** polyamide

bands of the V8 sensor activate one or more shutters, thus determi-

ning the passage of the air according to the ambient relative humidity

rate. The greater the humidity within building, the more the shutters

are open. The V8 sensor is isolated from the entering airflow; it only

measures the interior moisture content. Moreover, thanks to a thermal

correction, the opening of the shutters is carried out independently of

the external climatic conditions.

The humidity sensitive technology is applied to humidity sensitive air in-

lets and to humidity sensitive grilles and extract units, located in rooms

where the humidity reveals the level of interior pollution (lounge, be-

drooms, bathrooms).

Manually activated airflow (1)

Principle: To allow the occupant to increase the extract airflow at the time of in-tensive pollution.When the humidity is not sufficient to reveal a state of high pollution (use of the kitchen, toilets…) the occupant can manually activate a peak airflow at the ex-tract unit to quickly evacuate the foul/odorous air, the excess of moisture and the bad smells. This boost can be activated by means of pushbutton (« on-off switch » version) or by the action on a cord. This function can also supplement a humi-dity sensitive function on an extract unit. The manual airflow is applied to the extract units with manual boost, in rooms where the humidity is not sufficient to reveal the pollution level (toilets, airflow complement in kitchens, etc).

Airflow activated by the presence detection sensor (2)

Principle: to increase automatically the airflow when a presence is detected in the room.The human presence is sufficient to activate automatically the Eyebooster pre-sence detector. Then it generates the opening of the shutters of the extract unit at « maximum airflow ». This process is used when moisture is not sufficient any-more to reveal a high pollution level (use of the toilets, random occupation in offices, etc.) ; this technology makes it possible to carry out energy savings over the period of non-detection, while returning to the basic or humidity sensitive airflow.

The Eyebooster module is composed of a pyroelectric sensor detecting the con-vergent infra-red rays through a lens of Fresnel. With a 4m ray of detection and a 100° angle of detection, the detector offers an optimal detection. The infra-red rays concentrated on the sensor are permanently analysed ; as soon as a varia-tion of radiation is perceived, a signal is sent to the electronic card which analyses it and then activates the motor controlling the opening of the extract unit shut-ters. The presence detection technology is used on extract units and terminals in mechanical ventilation in rooms where humidity is not sufficient to reveal the pollution level (toilets, offices, etc).

Airflow activated by the agitation detection sensor (3)

Principle: To control the airflow in an automatic way, proportional to the agitation in the room.The detection mode is the same to the presence detection one (Eyebooster mo-dule). The difference is at the level of the analysis of the received signal. The great zone of detection is divided in a multitude of small zones. The electronic card then analyses the signal received in order to deduct a « movement quantity» directly related to the number of variations in temperatures registered from one zone to another by interval of time.The movement detection technology is used to control special air inlets and outlets, or even the working of the fan in rooms where the humidity is not sufficient to reveal the level of pollution (rooms with a great variability of occupation like conference rooms, classrooms, etc.).

Good ventilation means good choice of the ventilation technique. The selected ventilation technique depends on the objectives laid down in

the project (reduction of heating costs, improvement of the air quality, reduction of expenses, simplicity of maintenance, etc.) but more espe-

cially depends on the environment, major data in particular in case of refurbishment since it is a question of adaptation to an already existing

architecture.

Controlled mechanical ventilation: collective treatment for apartments

Renewal of the air in buildings is ensured by the presence of a fan (3). This is located in the roof or in the terrace of the building. In mechanical

humidity sensitive ventilation, the air extracted though the extract units (2) from the wet rooms imposes the air renewal of all the housing. Only

humidity sensitive air inlets (1) are then able to distribute the new air according to the needs of each main rooms. The humidity sensitive / pre-

sence detection extract units allow to distribute the available airflow generated by the fan according to the needs of each wet room, of each

dwelling. So rooms or dwellings with high requirements in new air dispose of a more important pressure and airflow than the empty rooms or

dwellings.

In that case, the fan is placed inside the dwelling. This treatment is also applicable for individual houses as well as apartments. The localization

of the fan inside the dwelling provides the advantage of making it directly accessible, appreciable for maintenance.

As previously, the air renewal in the dwelling is ensured by the presence of a fan (3). In mechanical humidity sensitive ventilation, the air ex-

tracted though the extract units (2) from the wet rooms imposes the renewal in air of all the dwelling. Only humidity sensitive air inlets (1) are

then able to distribute the new air according to the needs of each main rooms. The humidity sensitive / presence detection extract units allow

to distribute the available airflow generated by the fan according to the needs of each wet room. So rooms with high requirements in new air

dispose of a more important pressure and airflow than the empty rooms.

The air renewal is ensured by the presence of an only fan (3). The silent fan can be placed in a cupboard / ceiling void, which allows an easier

maintenance ; It can also be placed in the attic when the fan does not have any acoustic properties.

the dwelling. Only humidity sensitive air inlets (1) are then able to distribute the new air according to the needs of each main rooms. The humi-

Passive stack ventilation - collective treatment for apartments

In individual housing as in apartments, the passive stack ventilation exploits the natural motors (wind and thermal draught) in order to renew

the air within the dwellings. These « motors » create a pressure in the ventilation duct (3) that involves an air circulation inside the dwelling

towards outside (through the ventilation duct). The polluted air requires its replacement by new air to be evacuated: this one is admitted by

humidity sensitive air inlets (1) located above windows, in habitable rooms (bedrooms and living room).

The air is then evacuated through wet rooms (toilets, bathroom, kitchen) through extract grilles (2): this principle is called «sweeping». Depen-

ding upon natural motors, wind and thermal draught, the passive stack ventilation may be random: it is therefore necessary to control it. The

humidity sensitive process, whilst measuring the humidity rate in order to determine the necessary airflow, gives an adapted answer to the

variability of the natural motors. In addition to its energy saving (no fan) the first qualities of this ventilation technique are acoustics (low air

speeds) and simplicity of maintenance.

Hybrid ventilation - collective treatment for apartments

Between passive stack ventilation and mechanical ventilation, the hybrid ventilation is a new concept which consists in using components and di-

mensioning of the passive stack ventilation ducts coupled to a non-permanent low pressure mechanical assistance. The mechanical assistance is used

only when the forces of natural motors are not sufficient to ensure the required airflow. Its start-up is automatic; it can be activated by a temperature

sensor or a pressure controller. The air is admitted by humidity sensitive air inlets in the main rooms (bedrooms and living rooms) ; it is evacuated

through wet rooms (toilets, bathroom, kitchen) through humidity sensitive extract grilles (2). These components make it possible to control the

airflows according to the needs for each room.

The hybrid ventilation aims to gather the advantages of easy maintenance, energy savings, acoustics and reliability of the passive stack ventilation with

the airflow performances of the mechanical ventilation.

Hybrid ventilation: the best of each technology for a new concept

Hybrid ventilation - Individual house

The air circulation from outside to inside is allowed by the thermal draught and by the wind effect at the vertical duct when these motors are

sufficient, and thanks to the fan assistance when necessary.

The air is admitted by humidity sensitive air inlets in the main rooms (bedrooms and living rooms) ; it is evacuated through wet rooms (toilets,

bathroom, kitchen) through humidity sensitive extract grilles (2) which are connected to the assistance fan. These components make it possible

to control the airflows according to the needs for each room.

The low energy consumption, low speed of the fan and its non-permanent working provide the hybrid ventilation real advantages of easy mainte-

nance, energy sobriety, acoustics, airflow performances and reliability.

of air varies from one dwelling to another (2), from one moment to ano-ther. It is to meet this variable need that the Aereco ventilation system proposes airflow directly depending on the level of interior pollution of each building. So, the increase of the inner pollution rate, usually accom-panied by a humidity rate increase, causes the opening of humidity sen-sitive air inlets and extract units. In less occupied residences, the reduced air bypass sections allow energy saving on the heating.

Pressures and airflows are re-balanced (3):

In collective building, the thermal draught naturally tends to support the lower floors at the expense of the higher floors. In order to com-pensate this difference of pollution and the airflow variations, humidity sensitive air inlets and extract units are more opened to the higher le-vels than to the ground floor.

For a same occupation on each floor, the Aereco process atte-nuates the airflow variations whereas the passive ventilation generates great airflow disparities between the floors.

Comfort and energy savings: the secrets of the modulated ventilation

Aereco process passive fixed ventilation

By proposing an airflow adapted to the needs of the occupants at every moment inside the dwelling and between the dwellings, Aereco mo-dulated ventilation components decrease the thermal losses due to the ventilation, improve quality of air renewal and limit moistures caused by condensation.

Invented by Aereco in 1984, the humidity sensitive ventilation is consi-dered as a major technology among the modulated ventilation systems today.

Comfort and energy savings: the secrets of the modulated ventilation

A better renewed air for a greater comfort

By ventilating in priority places which need it, the Aereco modulated ventilation components largely contribute to the air improvement quality in hou-sing.

When a main room is occupied, its relative humidity rate increases ; air inlets open then more amply to generate a more important airflow and to better eva-cuate the pollution. The activity in wet rooms (kitchen, bathroom, toilets…) is systematically accompanied by water vapour emissions ; the opening of the ex-tract units increases with the relative humidity rate, in-creasing the airflow and thus evacuating more quickly the created pollution.

A protection against moisture

The rise of inner humidity rate generated by brea-thing and human activity, kitchen or shower can create destroying condensations, transformed in moulds. When the humidity rate dangerously in-creases, humidity sensitive grilles and extract units open more amply to quickly evacuate the excess of moisture, and eradicate the risk of condensa-tion.

Reduced and controlled heating consumption

Ventilation is often considered to be responsi-ble for a great part of the thermal losses within housing, sometimes up to 50 %. If that remains true for the majority of the traditional ventila-tion processes, the Aereco system allows for its part to preserve heat in less occupied rooms and dwelling, by automatically reducing the airflow. These performances are recognised and developed by thermal regulations in se-veral countries.

In humidity sensitive or presence detection version, BXS extract units offer an airflow always adapted to the needs of air renewal, to guarantee an optimal air quality and energy saving. The many combinations of airflow and modes of action allow meeting all the needs for wet rooms.

The infra-red rayes concentra-ted on the sensor are permanently analysed ; as soon as a variation of radiation is perceived, a signal is transmitted to the electric card, which analyses it then activates the motor controlling the opening of the extract unit shutters.

With a greater available airflow, the BXL extract unit is particularly adapted to the specific needs of the kitchen, especially at the time of intensive pol-lution. The many combinations of airflow and modes of action also allow fulfilling the specific requirements of other rooms.

TDA extract units directly adapt the extracted air-flow to the presence detected in the room. A simple initial adjustment of the basic airflow according to the number of residents is sufficient to ensure a per-manent air quality. When the room is unoccupied, the airflow is automatically reduced, then allowing saving 50 % on thermal losses due to ventilation.

The basic airflow is started as soon as a presence is detected: TDA return to the reduced airflow 20mn after the last detection. So, when the room is empty, the heating energy is preserved, offering up to 50 % of energy saving compared to a fixed ventilation with same air quality.

A simple adjustment to determine the occupa-tion (2)

A cursor allows, at any time, to set the number of people staying in the office. Then it acts on the basic airflow activated during the detection (from 25 to 100 m3/h).

To detect the movement in offices.

The MDA module directly adapts the airflow according to the level of movement detected in the conference room, the classroom, etc. Integrated in the duct network and lo-cated between a fan and a diffuser, the MDA is controlled by detectors of movement covering the zones of activity in the room. So the MDA adapts the airflow in a way pro-portional to detected movement. The obtained airflow is at each moment perfectly adapted to the needs of air renewal and allows to obtain important energy saving. According to the scenarios’ occupation, it is easy to ob-tain up to 65 % of energy saving in comparison with ventilation with fixed airflow.

Movement detection: modulates the airflow accor-ding to the detected movement level.

Work with the comfort airflow of the diffuser (no nui-sance of draught).

To ventilate according to the movement

The MDA module works according to the same principle as the Eyebooster module (see pages concerning BXS and TDA products). The difference is located at the level of the analysis of the received signal. The great detection zone is cut out in a multitude of small zones. The electronic card then analyses the received signal to deduct a « movement quantity » directly linked to the number of temperature va-riations registered from one zone to another by interval of time.

A discrete integration

Hidden in the ductwork, the MDA is invisible and adaptable to the traditional dimensioning of the AV networks for ter-tiary sector buildings such as conference room, classroom, etc...: Only the connected diffuser is visible.

Discretion and comfort in sanitary ins-tallations.

The best ventilation is often the one no-body notices. You will not notice the new « V2A » fan for sanitary installations: quiet, easily hidden in wall cupboard or in loft place, you will simply assess the quality of the air renewal and the speed of humidi-ty evacuation. Installed in apartments or individual houses, the V2A can connect up to two humidity sensitive extract units located in bathroom and toilets. As far as consumption is concerned, it is so energy effective as discrete with its electronically managed low consumption motor.

An intelligent motor (1)

The ECM motor (Electronic Commu-tation Motor) of the V2A is driven by an electronic card which controls the speed. The motor speed associated with a special wheel allow to maintain the pressure at 80 Pa, allowing the air-flow to be proportional to the variable cross section of the two connected humidity controlled extract units. The-refore, the electrical consumption and the noise emission are kept at their minimum.

An installation closer to the occu-pant (2)

The silence and the compactness of the V2A allow an installation directly in the inhabited space of housing, in a wall cupboard, a loft place, etc. Its maintenance is facilitated by its localisation closed to the occupant, and also by the removable filter easily accessible by withdrawing the lid without any tool.

The slimness and the silence of the VAM fan contribute to its installation in inhabited space. Easily installed in outlet of passive stack ventilation ducts thanks to an astute adap-tation box, the VBP very low-pressure fan allows maintaining all the year satisfactory airflow on basic installation functioning in passive stack ventilation. Important: The aeraulic performances below are measured according to EN 13141-5 ; They assess the fan alone, without taking into account the pressure losses of the adaptation part on the duct. The available pressure at the grilles can be much lower depending on the adaptation part used ; it is so necessary to know the pressure losses of the ductwork in general, of the adaptation part in particular.

To guarantee a good working of the system when the pressure losses of the adaptation part are unknown, we advise to consider a capacity for the [VBP+adaptation part] system around 315 m3/h @ 10 Pa @ 12V, corresponding to an airflow of 7 grilles (each grille = 45 m3/h @ 10 Pa).

Passive stack ventilation with individual ducts in collective housing:

All connections have to be carried out using adhesive tape (c) or speed clamps. Rigid ducts have to be fixed to the structure of the building by means of brackets.

Fix the sleeve (d) in the wall.

Fix the extract grille (e) on its sleeve (d).

2 types of extract grille connections are possible: - spigot to be directly encased in the sleeve- without spigot to be fixed to the wall with the duct or the sleeve.

Install the vertical rigid ducts (a) in the space dedicated for this purpose. Vertical ducts have to be provided at the top with an adapted outlet, which allows reaching the required airflow. Each duct serves a floor.

Connect a rigid 90° crank (b) to the base of each vertical duct, at each floor.

Realise the connection sleeve-crank using adhesive tape (c).

Repeat stages 1 and 2 for each extract grille.

Grilles serving the same room on each floor are connected to the same duct, with an individual part floor-high.

Air inlets on window

Drill a slot in the highest part of joinery to the dimensions speci-fied in the product cards.

Fix the backplate using 2 screws (some air inlets are directly fixed, without any backplate).

Clip the air inlet on its backplate.Fix the canopy outside the window using 2 screws.

The installation of air inlets type EAH and EHT has to be made through the wall. Fitting notices are delivered with products.

AV extraction networkExample of installation of a AV mono-dwelling

Position the fan (a) at the adapted place.

Fix the ridge terminal (i) to the exhaust duct connected to the fan (a).

Fix the trident sleeve (g) in the wall.

Connect a short length of flexible duct (d) to the sleeve (g).

Fix the extract unit (h) on its sleeve (g). 2 types of connection are possible: - spigot to be directly encased in the sleeve- without spigot to be fixed to the wall with the duct or the sleeve.

Connect the sleeve (b) to the fan (a).

Connect the flexible shaft (d) to the sleeve (b). This type of duct avoids the propagation of the vibrations of the fan and facilitates the implementation.

Carry-out the connection sleeve-duct using the adhesive tape (c) .

Connect the rigid duct network including right connections (e) and crank (f ) to the flexible shafts (d) located at each end. Repeat the stages 3 and 9 for the other extract units.

All the connections have to be carried out using the adhesive tape (c) or speed clamps.

Rigid ducts have to be fixed to the building by means of brackets (k).

Ducts with rectangular or oblong section are also usable.
