Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) located at Kakryal, Katra (J&K) in the picturesque foothills of the Trikuta hills and the holy shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, has created a strong niche within a short period of its existence. The fully residential campus is safe and endowed with the impact of positive vibes of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, which is seen on one side of the campus. This influence is visible in the courteous behavior of the campus community – be it the staff or faculty members or the students. The University has excellent infrastructure and provides semi-furnished accommodation to all the faculty members as well as staff members in the campus. The SMVDU endeavors to provide excellent education to the students through undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral degree programs so as to create finest professionals and human beings. The blending and growing together of assorted academic disciplines with global outlook has provided the students an added benefit of an exposure to the university life, freedom of thought and expression to innovate.

The focus of the University on Management Education is amply revealed by the fact that the University's School of Business is the largest with 17 highly talented young and dedicated faculty members imparting world class education to the MBA students and also to other engineering and science students. Students are trained for facing the challenging and changing needs of the global society. Extra-curricular activities add to an overall process of development of personality of the students admitted through CAT.

SMVD University receives financial support from the Shrine Board and the UGC. In the past our MBA students have got campus placements in TCS, HDFC Bank, ICICI, Pratistha, Mahindra Logistics, SBI Life. Management Education has become a necessity because of its pragmatic approach to transformation of ordinary human being to value additive human resource. Faculty of Management, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University has earned a reputation over the years for blending theory with practice in its business courses. Besides learning theory, we apply theory to real situations through the development of business plans and strategies. Faculty of Management is the most sought after seat of learning in the discipline of business education in the State of Jammu & Kashmir. We at Faculty of Management take pride in providing eye-catching infrastructural facility, quality education and placement at the end of the programme of Master of Business Administration. We have a galaxy of self motivated management teachers who are continuously experimenting with most modern pedagogy which not only aims at producing corporate executives but tomorrow’s entrepreneurs too. The curricula offered by Faculty of Management is comprehensive and it takes care of instilling in-depth knowledge in the areas of marketing, finance, human resource development, operations and supply chain management. The industry captains and management experts regularly visit Faculty of Management and deliver lectures on current and contemporary issues and share their rich experience with the green minds in order to give a time-honoured shape to the budding managers. Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) has been established through an act of J&K Legislature as an autonomous, fully residential and highly technical University of excellence with grant and continuing support from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, Katra. The University has the unique distinction of being inaugurated by the then President of India Dr. A.P.J. Kalam in year 2004 and its first convocation was delivered by the Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh in the year 2008. The University programmes are well recognised by AICTE, Govt. of India. The University have been accredited by TATA Consultancy Services (TCS). Govt. of India and Industries have been providing support to University for projects and R&D activities under various scheme.

The University has witnessed a remarkable growth by transforming 470 acres of barren land in the lap of Trikuta hills, the abode of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, into a magnificent “Temple of Learning”. The academic activity, syllabi and evaluation procedure has been designed as per Indian Institutes of Technology. The University has signed Memorandum of Understanding with various national and international academic, professional and research institutes as well as in industry to augment the learning process and to develop research and development programmes. The University has four Faculties with eleven Schools which promote five Undergraduate and ten Postgraduate

programmes besides offering Ph.D degree. Being a fully residential university, the campus provides comfortable single, double and triple seated accommodation to all the students. There are sufficient in-door and out-door sports facilities available to the residents. Different forums and clubs like Music, Dance, Drama, Quiz, Adventure, Mind-Meet forum etc. help students to utilize their spare time in a more creative and innovative manner. The campus provides an ideal atmosphere for interactions and healthy competition among students and easy to access faculty and professionals from corporate world and other leading institutes. The students are encouraged to take part in extra - curricular activities and every effort is made to expose them to the competitive world. The qualified faculty members are capable of providing all the necessary inputs to over 1300 students admitted purely on the basis of merit. The admissions are primarily made on AIEEE ranking for B-Tech Program and CAT, MAT, CMAT scores, interviews and group discussions, etc. for management program. Students from over twenty different states of the country epitomize a healthy amalgamation of different cultures, religions and languages on the campus. The campus is a classic example of a mini cultural India with students from various places all the way from Kashmir to Kerala. The University makes a conscious effort to create extensive university - industry cooperation.

UNIVERSITY CAMPUS

The University is located on 470 acres of land in the lap of Trikuta Hills, the abode of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi at about 2700 feet above the sea level. The pyramidal type architecture merges beautifully with the valley like ambience of the surrounding serene hills. The surrounding green hills and the perennial stream of Jhajjar in the east minimize the effects of hot and cold

winds and produce a pollution free atmosphere on the campus. The average day temperature in summer is around 35 degrees Celsius, 4 degrees Celsius lesser than the surrounding areas of Jammu region and the maximum and minimum temperatures in winter are about 14 and 5 degrees Celsius, respectively. Moderately high hills full of trees and plants on the western side of the campus shields the campus, particularly the residential zone, from the long summer afternoons. The spiritual influence of the Divine Mother and Holy Shrine is palpabale on the campus. The slight incline of the campus provides an ideal place for endurance exercises and, which helps in adding spiritual dimension to the quality of scientific, technical

and management education and life on the campus. An early morning and late evening walk, along the Shrine axis and other loop roads, surrounded by evenly placed lovely trees and clear sky with sparkling stars, is very refreshing for body, mind and the soul.

CONNECTIVITY

The University is about 12 Kms south of holy town of Katra and is about 40 Kms north of Jammu, the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir, overlooking Jammu - Srinagar National Highway (NH-1A). Jammu is accessible through road, rail and air routes. Train connectivity is being extended to Katra and the same is expected to be made operational by the railways in the foreseeable future. The nearest railway station Katra would be about 8 km from the campus.

IDEAL LOCATION FOR FULLY RESIDENTIAL UNIVERSITY

The University is located close to centers of commerce but at the same time fairly far away from the maddening crowds of the major cities, which can distract students. The activities on the campus are designed to provide ample scope for interaction between students, faculty, staff and visiting guests, even beyond normal working hours to promote self-study, competition, innovation, creativity, self-confidence, nurture their hidden talent and enable students to make optimum use of their potential and be responsible citizens. The students are encouraged to study, analyze and understand their emotions, mind, thoughts and the consequences of their own actions. The students are considered the great asset of the Institution.

PRACTICAL ZONES

The meticulously designed building with shining’s loping rooftops present an aesthetic book of the campus.

The campus has been divided into five following zones,

(i) Residential zone with faculty / staff apartments and Girls hostel.

(ii) Academic zone

(iii) Administrative zone

(iv) Residential zone for male students.

(v) Cultural and recreation zone for students and Sports Complex.

The University provides residential accommodation to faculty and other employees. The residential area is located in the southern most portion of the campus and is provided with a lovely fountain, lawns, gardens and a loop road with flowering trees.

A Guest House with kitchen and dining facility is located in the residential zone to facilitate interaction between the guests and faculty. “Vaishnavi”, the Girls’ Hostel is also located in this area.

II. ACADEMIC ZONE

Academic area consists of four main buildings, which house four faculties, namely, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Management, Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences and Faculty of Sciences, with space for faculty, staff, classrooms, workshops for Mechanical Engineering.

III. ADMINISTRATIVE ZONE AND AUDITORIUM

The administrative block, located at slight elevation houses offices for the Vice Chancellor, Registrar, Finance division and other administrative officers. A centrally air-conditioned, state of art Auditorium with seating capacity for 1000 persons is also located in the area.

IV. RESIDENTIAL AREA FOR MALE STUDENTS

Boys’ hostels with single, double and triple seated accommodation are located at both ends of the Shrine Axis so that the walking distance to the Schools remains not more than 3 to 5 minutes. Dining facilities managed by the Students Mess.

V. CULTURAL AND SPORTS ZONE

The facilities for social and cultural activities have been provided in the Academic area and the student’s hostels. A full fledged Sports Complex with most of the modern facilities is under development.

POWER & WATER SUPPLY

An exclusive 33 KV substation is established on the campus to ensure uninterrupted power supply to all the parts of the campus. The University has a dug well with a provision of pumping and storing 1,00,000 gallons of water in the campus. The quality of water supplied is checked from time to time.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS

With the help of BSNL, Udhampur, the University has

its own digital telephone exchange and a mobile tower on the campus. The exchange supports CLI (Caller Line Identification) apart from the other services. The internal telephone network of SMVDU has one of the latest upto date systems, a Siemens Hipath 4300 series IP ready communication server with 336 (expandable upto 1392 extensions) analog and 24 digital extensions. This has allowed users to receive calls from anywhere with zero or close to zero dependence on call transfer. Mobile connectivity of almost all the operators of J&K is possible in the campus.

NET AND INTERNET CONNECTIVITY

The University has a full-fledged network center developed on Linux, Solaris and Microsoft servers. This centre serves as the control point for the internet facility available in the University. SMVDU has commissioned Wi Fi connectivity in academic and student residential area. It has been built using Cisco switches. Internet services are provided through an External router, Cisco PIX firewall, and 20 Mbps Internet connections. The centre is equipped with IBM and sun servers running latest softwares. All Schools and Faculties in the University are directly controlled by the centre. The Network Centre provides unlimited usage of Internet facility to all the students and faculty through a 20 Mbps leased line connectivity. Students, Research scholars and Project staff can access Internet through any PC connected to LAN in any School / Centre.

HEALTH CARE FACILITIES

Good Health care facilities are mandatory for any residential University and for this the University has

appointed two full time Lady Doctors, a Medical Officer alongwith Male & Female Nursing staff, one pharmacist, Male Nursing staff, one Lab. Technician, etc.

The Medical Aid Centre works round the clock and caters to the routine cases and has most of the basic laboratory facilities for biochemical and haematology tests. The centre is also equipped with highly sophisticated investigative instruments, like Ray to Semi Auto - Analyzer and BPL E.C.G. machine with Cardiac Parameter Calculations etc. Medical Aid Centre has separate male and female wards.

An Ambulance Service with emergency facilities is also available to take critical patients for emergency treatment to Batra Hospital or Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu.

CATERING FACILITY

The catering services for the students, faculty and staff have been outsourced and are being rendered by contractors in the boys’ and girls’ hostels. More establishments are expected to be made operational in the near future apart from independent canteens at different locations within the campus.

SMVDU LIBRARY

The library reflects the culture of the university and acts as a nerve centre and the knowledge store. The Central Library is built on 36000 Square yards area and is equipped with books, journals and modern facilities through the UGC grant. The University Library is a

specialized technical library. It has nearly 25000 books, more than 300 CD-ROM titles. Library has also subscribed to more than 87 national and international journals & periodicals. It has also access to various online databases and electronic journals.

SMVDU Library is also the member of INDEST and has access to Springer Link, IEL Online, ACM, and ABI Inform Complete & Math Sci. Net. Collection is fully indexed and its catalogue can be accessed throughout the campus [OPEC (Online Public Access Catalogue) through INTRANET] and on internet (WebOPAC). Recently, British Council has established its second centre in India at the university level for Education at UK Centre in the Central Library to facilitate providing information about exchange programs.

The whole library collection is fully indexed and the catalogue is fully computerized. The library also provides Current Awareness Service (CAS) and Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI) services. Apart from the Central Library there are four College Reference Libraries. The central library works from 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. whereas the reference libraries are open upto 10 p.m. Book bank facility is also available for the new students.

HOSTEL MANAGEMENT

The Dean of Students is the head of the hostel management and is assisted in the administrative responsibilities by Associate Deans and wardens. The administrative head of each hostel, the Warden, is a faculty member. There is a Hostel Working Committee at the Hostel level. The Hostel Working Committee of each hostel is composed of Warden, Hostel Secretary, Mess Secretary, Sports Secretary, Cultural Secretary, Maintenance Secretary and other student representatives. The committee is responsible to ensure smooth, healthy and active pattern of life in each hostel. The creation of such a working system ensures that students are provided with an opportunity to lay down appropriate norms of behaviour to suit different situations and social occasions in the hostels. On registration the students are provided a Hostel Resident Guide Book by the Office of Dean of Students. The Guide book has the detail of information, rules and regulations regarding the hostel campus conduct and behaviour. The students are expected to read it and sign the copy of consent for the compliance to the rules and regulations.

INTRODUCTION

SMVD University provides an opportunity to students for extracurricular pursuits. A student participates actively in social and intellectual activities far beyond the realm of the classroom experience, and he/she expands his/her interests and forms new relationships. The co-curricular activities mainly include Recreational

and Creative Activities, Sports Activities, Student Publications, and Students Welfare. In addition, there is an ample focus towards the Social Service and community oriented activities.

DEPARTMENT OF SPORTS

The department of Sports has started activities of games and sports from the session 2004-2005 and many tournaments have been organized in the campus during the previous sessions. In order to raise the standards of performance of the university sports at the state and national level competitions, the University has scientific and most modern training equipments and facility. Specialized training programs are organized from time to time to equip/update/enable the students’ performances. The Inter College (Colleges under University), Inter Hostel and Inter House tournaments have been organized within the campus that has not only created the interest among the students but also prepared them for the competitions at different levels. The Department of Sports has the following facilities :

CONDUCT AND DISCIPLINE

A student of SMVDU shall conform to high standard of discipline and shall conduct himself/herself, within and outside the premises of the University, In a manner befitting the students of University. Ragging in any form is banned in SMVD University. The University treats ragging as a cognizable offence and stern action is taken against the offenders. To safeguard ideals of scholarship, character and personal behaviour, the University reserves the right of withdrawal/ expulsion of any student at any time for reason deemed sufficient in violation of University norms. Ragging of any kind and of any manner is strictly prohibited as per the order of Hon’ble Supreme Court. Anyone found involved in an act of intimidation / abuse to a fresh student is liable to be prosecuted / restricted under law.

STUDENT PUBLICATIONS

The University policies encourage student participation in bringing out publications in which students play a

vital role. Apart from faculty members, student members are also included in the publication committee so that they are fully involved in bringing out various publications and organizing of events for nurturing the literary and journalistic talent of the student community.

STUDENT WELFARE

Student welfare activities have been streamlined and are conducted through Dean of Students Office, House system has been introduced in the university in 2006 with students grouped into five houses (Agni, Vayu, Akash, Jal and Prithvi) across various subject disciplines. This is aimed at allowing larger interaction among the students coming from diverse cultures and to encourage a sense of competitiveness and teamwork among the students in the University. Mind Meet Forum arranges debates and other literary events

for the students to help them improve their communication skills.

COUNCIL OF STUDENTS’ AFFAIRS (CSA)

Office of the Dean of Students’ constitutes Council of Students’ Affairs (CSA) with about forty members representing each class nominated by respective directors and a cultural and sports sections of the university. Hon’ble Vice Chancellor is the patron and Dean of Students is the ex-officio chairman of the council. A secretary is elected by the members of council. The council takes care of all students’ affairs, activities, and various welfare schemes and also presents the students grievances to University authorities. The other sub-committees under CSA are Academic Affairs Committee, Editorial committee, Sports and Cultural Committee, and Campus Improvement Committee.

SMVDU has designed its programs in the field of Scientific, Technical, Management & Humanities subjects with an emphasis on excellent academics, research and lucrative professional career for the students and significant contribution towards the economic growth of our country. ACADEMIC SETUP

INTRODUCTION

SMVDU has four Faculties (Engineering, Science, Management and Humanities & Social Sciences). The colleges of basic disciplines are similarly to various faculties in any University. This allows the horizontal structure to have critical expansion thereby making the overall administration simpler and easier. Each faculty has several constituent schools (equivalent to departments) in specialized area within it. This set-up facilitates inter-disciplinary inputs, co-operation and activities.

EXAMINATION & EVALUATION

The examination pattern is based on grading system with two minor and one major examination in a semester. The faculty sets up question papers, conducts examination and evaluates the answer scripts. Before finalization of grades by the faculty moderation committee, answer scripts are shown to the students. The step is aimed at inculcating responsibility and discipline amongst the students and the faculty.

SCHEDULE

All full-time teaching programs are semester based. Duration of each semester (excluding the examination time) is 15 to 16 working weeks. The minimum number of working days in a semester will be 75 ; preferably there should be 90 days. Examinations in a semester and for each course will be held in three stages :

Minor 1 after 30 days of semester teachingMinor 2 after 60 days of semester teachingMajor at the end of the semester teaching

The weightage of Minor 1 and Minor 2 is 20% each, the 50% weight age is given to the Major the rest 10% weightage is given to assignments. The flexibility is given to the individual teachers to organize the examinations on the above patterns and communicate the semester grade point to the A&E branch within one week of conducting the examination.

CREDIT ASSIGNMENTS

Each course has a certain number of credits assigned to it depending upon its lecturers, tutorials and laboratory contact hours in a week.

LECTURES / TUTORIALS

One lecture / tutorial our per week per semester is assigned one credit.

CREDIT REQUIREMENTS

A Grade corresponding to specified number of grade points, is awarded in each course for which a student is registered. A minimum number of credits should be acquired in order to qualify for a degree and continuation on semester or session basis (Table 1).

COURSE COORDINATOR

A member of the faculty called the course coordinator coordinates each course. He / she has the full responsibility for coordinating the course, coordination the work of other members of the faculty involved in that course, holding the tests and awarding the grades. In case of any difficulty with a course, the student is expected to approach the respective course coordinator for advice and clarification.

REGULATIONS AND PROCEDURES

REGISTRATION

Registration is a very important procedural part of the academic system. The Registration procedure ensures that the students name is on the roll list of each course that he / she wants to study. No credit is given if the student attends a course for which he / she has not registered. Registration for courses to be taken in a particular semester will be done according to a specified schedule before the end of the previous semester. Each student is required to complete the registration form by indicating the slot wise choice of courses. In absentia registration for registration after the specified date will be allowed only in rare cases at the discretion of Dean of the Faculty, subject to the approval of the Vice Chancellor. In case of illness or absence during registration, the students should intimate the same to the Dean of the faculty. Attendance and other related rules for completion of the course would be implemented as per university norms.

ADVICE ON COURSES

At the time of completing the registration form, each student must consult to finalize the academic programme keeping in view minimum / maximum numbers of total and lecture credits, past performance, backlog of courses, SGPA/CGPA, prerequisite, workload and students interests.

ADMISSION PROCESS FOR MANAGEMENT

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR MBA

The candidate must hold a Bachelor’s Degree, with at least 60% marks or equivalent CGPA awarded by any of the Universities incorporated by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India. The percentage of marks obtained by the candidate in the bachelor’s degree would be calculated based on the practice followed by the university / institution from where the candidate has obtained the degree. In case the university / institution does not have any scheme for converting CGPA into equivalent marks, the equivalence would be established by dividing the candidates CGPA by the maximum possible CGPA and multiplying the result with 100. Candidates appearing for the final year of bachelor’s degree/equivalent qualification examination and those who have completed degree requirements and are awaiting result can also apply.

SELECTION PROCESS

Selection of the students for MBA (2014-15) will be on the basis of valid CAT score followed by Group Discussion and Personal Interview. The aspiring candidates have to take up CAT 2013 examination

notified through advertisement by IIM’s CAT 2013. The candidate have to submit a separate application on the application form as given in the Annexure-I. (Candidate who has downloaded the application form, from the website must submit the form with a demand draft of `1100/- in favour of REGISTRAR, SHRI MATA VAISHNO DEVI UNIVERSITY, payable at Jammu).

Note : The decision relating to the increase or decrease is maximum intake is the prerogative of the University.

SCHEDULE

The Program of MBA consist of two academic sessions.

An academic session of the Faculty of Management

consists of two semesters. Generally the first semester starts in the first of August and the second semester starts in the first week of January.

Admissions to management programmes are made only at the beginning of the first semester and candidates must join the programmes at the commencement of the first semester.

PROCEDURE FOR ADMISSION

Applications are invited from candidates by advertising the programmes in the leading newspapers every year. Subsequently, application forms and the prospectus can be obtained from the University. All applications are processed and short listed applicants are called for Group Discussion and Personal Interview. The date for GD/PI is communicated and the selected candidates are given offer letters after the GD/PI and they are required to pay the requisite fees immediately as notified, failing which their admission offer shall stand automatically cancelled. Seats left vacant may then be offered to wait listed candidates. Candidates who have completed all the degree requirements at the time of registration but are unable to submit the degree certificate and other documents may be given provisional admission. This provisional admission will

be confirmed only after submission of the qualifying degree certificate / other documents latest by 31 December 2014 failing which their provisional admission shall stand automatically cancelled. Students can get updated information, from time to time, regarding the admission for Faculty of Management MBA 2014-15 from our website www.smvdu.net.in.

Please note that three separate demand drafts will have to be submitted at the time of admission / registration in favour of, “Registrar, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University”, payable at Jammu as indicated in Table-3. (Annual Fee Structure).
