Tough job

Typically used in underground mining and tunneling, jumbo drills and shaft jumbos have a tough job. They are used for hard- and soft-rock mining under harsh underground conditions – for blast holes, cross cut drilling, bolting and grouting. The primary applications are for mining of nickel, copper, gold, zinc, diamonds, salt, limestone, iron ore, platinum and granite.

Development jumbos are used for horizontal drilling (for drifting, ramping and tunneling), and typically have one or two booms, each with independent control systems to allow simultaneous drilling. Control of the booms is either manual/hydraulic or electric/hydraulic. The entire system is mounted on a carrier with a diesel engine for tramming and an electric power pack for drilling. Jumbo drills are also used for tunneling roads, water and sewer lines as well as water diversion tunnels for hydro projects.

Shaft jumbos are used for vertical development (shafts). They are available as one-, two- or three-boom models. They are either electrically driven or air driven.

Careful engineering is required to ensure high availability and productivity in such a complex piece of machinery. Caterpillar has developed a number of unique features designed to simplify maintenance and ensure maximum productivity and availability.

Key Subsystems

Carriers

The carriers are custom-designed to ensure minimum width and height with maximum face coverage and maneuverability. Their articulated design and compact size make them ideal for maneuvering and setup in tight spaces.

Booms

The MD series booms and new-generation UTB series booms use robust hydraulic cylinders, complete with double-activating lock checks. They are pin-compatible with the Bever semi-automated drilling system for fast and precise positioning (“Bever ready”). The MD and

Rock Solid PerformanceCat® jumbo drills combine rugged design, easy operation, and reliable drilling components. The result is faster cycle times, increased production and reduced per-ton costs. Each model includes electric or diesel power options. One- and two-boom models are offered to meet the demands of varied applications. The range of Cat jumbo drills also includes shaft jumbos for shaft-sinking operations and special jumbos for use in tunnel excavations.

UTB booms are complete with an auto-parallelism system and roll-over. All hoses are segmented in equal lengths to simplify inventory management and covered in a protective wrap.

Drills

The “New Generation” HPR series rock drill is designed for maximum performance. It drills holes from 35 mm (1.38 in) to 115 mm (4.50 in) in diameter. Output energies range from 10 to 21 kW. Using high-precision machine parts, we achieve outstanding performance at very low operating costs. The HPR series drills are engineered with only 70 parts – in stark contrast to conventional rock drills with approximately 200 parts. This reduces maintenance cost and effort considerably and simplifies inventory management. Variable-displacement, compensated pumps reduce energy loss.

Drill feed

The “New Generation” TR Series Aluminum feed is a proven high-quality engineered unit. Available in almost any custom length (including telescopic), it is a low-cost, easy-to-maintain product. The TR Series feed features replaceable stainless steel wear strips, built-in stinger, oversize stinger pad, oversized centralizer bushings with external wear indicators, and nylon hose reel complete with guards. The combination of aluminum cradle and steel mounts results in a light and durable assembly. Built for easy maintenance, the TR Series feeds cut scheduled maintenance downtime by as much as 60% compared to previous feeds. Feeds can be ordered in various lengths to fit your mining needs.

Ergonomic drilling and boom control panel (MD2070)

The “New Generation” electric/hydraulic control system allows for high-precision boom and feed placement and drilling accuracy. It also allows optimal use of various instrumentation levels, including laser systems, PLCs, radio or hardwired remote controls, and computer-automated systems. All control panels and solenoids meet NEMA 4 standards. There are two joysticks for each boom: One controls boom/feed positioning and the other controls drilling functions, including drill feed rotation lock and impact, low-impact enable, drill rod rattle, anti-jam enable, and feed auto-reset. Joysticks are fully proportional in the X, Y and Z axes, allowing exact control. In contrast to competitor models, Cat jumbos are equipped with off-the-shelf joysticks. These can be switched over or quickly replaced in the drift, ensuring that all functions of the jumbo can be controlled even in the event of a joystick failure.

Operator’s compartment (where applicable)

Ergonomic layout of the operator’s cabin allows for comfort and safety with anti-slip, anti-vibration floor; high-efficiency 24 V High Intensity Discharge (HID) lights; joystick controls; full instrumentation; and rubber isolators to limit vi bration in the compartment. The canopy height is adjustable from the operator’s seat and can be locked at three different heights. The telescopic canopy or cab is equipped with falling object and rollover protection structures (FOPS & ROPS-certified).

Advanced Features for Productivity

Smart cables and hoses

Unlike competitor models, Cat jumbo drills have feed cables and hoses of equal length. This reduces inventories and simplifies maintenance. No more “We have a cable, but it’s the wrong one.” The cables also feature a quick-change cable anchor for quick and easy cable changes.

78-piece rock drill

As previously stated, while conventional rock drills have around 200 parts, the Cat HPRH-3818 rock drill has only 78. This simplifies maintenance and reduces inventories. The combination of the proven oscillator valve design, oversized accumulators, short connecting bolts and long-life alloy support bushings results in optimum drilling uptime. The design also means faster troubleshooting, low-cost rebuild and reduced maintenance costs for both labor and parts – resulting in low-cost operation.

Accumulator

The bolt-on design allows the accumulator to be precharged on the bench and quickly and easily exchanged in the drift with out the need for special tools. The accumulator features oversized bolt-on diaphragms and a maintenance interval of 500 hours of operation between reseals.

Combination Air Lube/Auto Return

Constant air/lube to the drill is essential to reduce wear and prevent premature drill failure. The constant air pressure prevents outside contamination entering the drill housing and the constant lube eliminates the need to grease the drill.

While conventional systems only monitor the amount of lube in the lubricator, not whether it is arriving at the drill, Caterpillar has developed a failsafe combined lube-monitoring and auto-return function: If lubrication lines break, or if the air pressure is below 35 psi, auto-return is activated, saving the drill and avoiding costly drill repairs.

The MD series is equipped with an automatic retract and drill shutoff. This allows the operator to work more efficiently with multiple booms. When the drifter reaches the end of its travel, a plunger-operated valve mounted on the feed is actuated, returning the drifter to the back

of the feed and shutting off the hammer. The auto-retract bracket can be easily repositioned on the feed cylinder to adjust hole depth.

Anti-jam

Bad ground conditions, seams or cracks cause the rotation pressure to rise. This pressure rise is used to signal possible bit jamming to the feed system. When rotation pressure reaches a predetermined value, feed reverses and remains reversed until the rotation pressure returns to normal. When the feed pressure reduces while reversing, the hammer pressure reduces to collaring power. The response time for returning to forward motion is adjustable. The anti-jam function is controlled solely by a rugged and reliable hydraulic logic manifold. Keeping the power level of the drill reduced during collaring (getting the hole started) improves shank and coupling life and makes it easier for the operator to spot and collar the hole. The circuit allows for either manual or semiautomatic operations. No fault-prone electrical or electronic systems are involved.

Constant Sting

This feature allows the operator to maintain constant pressure on the feed stinger while drilling. This greatly aids maintenance of drill steel alignment and reduces downtime resulting from jammed or broken drill steels.

UTB Series boom (MD2070)

The UTB Series boom is equipped with 360° boom rollover. This handy feature allows the boom to be rotated through 360° to provide better access for setup. And, as mentioned, it is pin-compatible with the Bever semi-automated drilling system for fast and precise positioning.

Shaft Jumbos

Shaft jumbos come in two styles: slung-to-surface (that is, nested in the headframe) and installed on the galloway (a multideck platform suspended near the bottom of shaft during sinking).

Because every shaft has various requirements, shaft jumbos are built to the customer’s specifications. Customers can choose between 1-, 2-, 3- or 4-boom configuration with electric/hydraulic and pneumatic versions. The permissible weight of the galloway or the head frame at the time are factors in determining if the shaft jumbo is slung-to-surface or permanently stationed in the galloway. For a slung-to-surface type, the size of the bucket well and maximum winch load will determine the number of booms.

The carrier is specially designed to carry all the control systems to allow customized installation in a galloway stage or a freestanding structure.

Additional knuckles, boom extensions and parallelism allow a nearly 25% increase in face coverage. Shaft jumbos can be equipped with an electric or pneumatic power unit. The electric power unit offers the advantage of lighter weight while the pneumatic power unit is preferred in situations where mine electricians are hard to come by. The customer can request proportional electric controls or manual hydraulic valve controls mounted on the bottom of the remote.

We offer the HPR3818 drill for blast holes (not recommended for reaming) or the HPRH45 for blast holes and reaming.
