There are also hundreds of existing codes that were entered (by hand, by the way) that haven't been used in years. Therefore, we are going to issue each homeowner and/or renter two new codes. One for family use and one to give to your regular contractors (such as landscaping, pool, childcare, etc.). We will start issuing new code num- bers in a few weeks. You will receive your new number by mail and will have plenty of notice before we switch over (deactivating the older four digit numbers). Third, we have installed sensing equipment that will open the gates for emergency vehicles (police, fire, rescue, etc.) who turn into the gate area with their flashing lights on. As a backup, the existing key entry that all responders have will continue. Four, cameras and recording devices will be installed in the East Gate area now that they have proven ef- fective at the West Gate. Cameras and similar equipment will also be installed at the Rec Center (inside and outside) that will include the pool area. Now for the good news... once all this is completed, the HOA Board has voted to make the gate codes work 24/7. Gone will be the 6 pm to 6 am restriction as we can see and record (via the cameras) any unau- thorized entry. Gate Procedure Changes Thank you to everyone for their un-derstanding while we upgraded the gate mechanisms over these past few weeks. The project took much longer than originally thought, but now we have the latest and greatest equipment. As we proceed, there will be some changes required... and some good news at the end.

First, there are no changes needed with either the clicker or plastic en-try cards. They will work just as be-fore.

Second, for the squawk box, the system needs to have a five digit code replacing the current four numbers. There are also hundreds of existing codes that were entered (by hand, by the way) that haven't been used in years. Therefore, we are going to issue each homeowner and/or renter two new codes. One for family use and one to give to your regular contractors (such as landscaping, pool, childcare, etc.). We will start issuing new code num-bers in a few weeks. You will receive

your new number by mail and will have plenty of notice before we switch over (deactivating the older four digit numbers).

Third, we have installed sensing equipment that will open the gates for emergency vehicles (police, fire, rescue, etc.) who turn into the gate area with their flashing lights on. As a backup, the existing key entry that all responders have will continue.

Four, cameras and recording devices will be installed in the East Gate area now that they have proven ef-fective at the West Gate. Cameras and similar equipment will also be installed at the Rec Center (inside and outside) that will include the pool area.

Now for the good news... once all this is completed, the HOA Board has voted to make the gate codes work 24/7. Gone will be the 6 pm to 6 am restriction as we can see and record (via the cameras) any unau-thorized entry.

Pool Closed May 27 - June 1

The pool deck at the Rec Center will be resurfaced using “cool deck” mate-rials. The work is scheduled to start on May 27 and should be done by June 1. The pool will be closed during this time. The pool at the Fitness Center will be open as usual.

From the President

Hi Neighbors,

By now you should be noticing that the Rec. Center parking lot has been re paved, plus the Tennis Courts and the Basketball Court have been resurfaced and painted. Also, the walking path has been completely re paved and in the next few weeks, the paved sidewalks along Cas-tle Rock Drive will be seal coated.

The East gate has now been completely converted to the new system and this new system will be incorporated at the West gate beginning the second week of May.

Renovation of the Men's and Women's bathrooms/ locker rooms at the Rec. Center are nearing completion.

We have changed the lighting under the patio to yellow bug lights, as a resident had complained of bugs when the lights came on. Also, we have purchased new chairs for the residents' use at the Rec. Center.

Let me close by saying that our community would appreciate it if residents would refrain from feeding the ducks. This action lures the ducks into areas where they cause a health hazard around the Rec. Center pool and grassy areas.

Remember to increase your watering of plants and trees with the upcoming warmer summer months.

Regards, Mel Silverman, President

tential damage.

• If you have a cat that likes to claw your furniture, the first step is to add more scratching posts to the rooms where he likes to scratch. Cats prefer high, ver-tical posts. Adding catnip to the post can encourage scratching.

• You can try double-sided tape or aluminum foil on furniture to discourage cat scratching.

• Your best bet is to prevent unwanted behavior be-fore it begins. If you’re bringing home a new pet, es-tablish boundaries as soon as you bring them home, and be consistent with those boundaries. Make furniture inaccessible when you’re not home and your pets are in training. Keep your pets in a pet proofed area and set them up for success.

As a courtesy to all our neighbors,

PLEASE PICK UP AFTER YOUR PETS!

By Victoria Stillwell, Trainer, Positively.com

Pets and Furniture, do they ‘mix’

in your home? We love our pets and want them to be close to us, and while most of us like to snuggle with our dogs on the sofa or on the bed, others prefer their furniture remain pet-free. To teach your pets to stay off furniture you must first under-stand why they climb onto it. You may have heard that dogs like to be up on high places as a

way of claiming higher rank. This is a myth! Odds are that your couch or bed is the most comfortable spot in the room. Why wouldn’t they want to lie there? If you want to keep your pets off the furniture you can try the following:

• Keep a dog or cat bed in every room with furniture that your dogs or cats like to sleep on. This will en-courage them to sleep on their beds rather than on your couch.

• Never let a dog on the furniture that resource guards. If your dog growls at you as you sit next to him or as you try to move him off, do not allow him on that piece of furniture again until he learns to share it.

• Reinforce your dog for lying on his dog bed by feeding him delicious treats when he lays there.

• Newly adopted dogs thrive on boundaries in their new environment so don’t feel guilty about having con-sistent rules for where they can and cannot sleep

• Never grab your dog’s collar to get him off the couch. Targeting is a great, force-free way to teach your dog where you want him to be.

• Never use shock collars or mats to keep your dogs off the furniture. The stress, fear, and pain they will cause can actually create entirely new anxiety-based behavior problems that can be very hard to change.

• If your pet does jump up on the furniture teach him to “off” using a reward of a treat or toy for his compliance. Make the ground a much more pleasant and fun place to be by giving your pet comfortable places to sit or lie on and toys that he can play with in these locations.

• When training your pet to stay off the furniture, cover it with a plastic cover, blanket, or bed sheet. Your pet is going to make mistakes during the training, and you want your furniture to be protected from po-

Rejuvenating Your Bushes

Page 6 Castle Rock TimesCastle Rock Times

By Jon Gibson, Complete Landscaping

Now that it seems we are starting to average 60 de-grees at night, it should be safe to start rejuvenation any plants that seem to be thin, old, woody or over grown.

Rejuvenating older or overly large shrubs ex-tends their life and im-proves their aesthetic value. One method is to cut all stems about 12-18 inches above the ground. This is a severe

measure and changes the appearance drastically. However, when done in spring before bud burst, a great proliferation of stems will grow just below each cut by mid-summer. At that time, about half of the stems should be removed and the remaining ones should be cut back to different heights. Varying the height and cutting just above an outward pointing bud will stimulate growth of new branches out of the can-opy. This procedure works well for larger fast growing shrubs like Texas rangers, xylosma, and oleander and for slower growing shrubs like hop bush and creosote. Some shrubs such as cassias, arborvitae and junipers do not respond favorably to this treatment and might die. Rosemary is also not a candidate for this proce-dure. Thicker stems of older rosemary shrubs without needles should not be cut because they do not initiate new shoots behind the cut. The voids created by cut-

ing the common areas of the Lakes in the beautiful condition which makes the neighborhood so enjoyable and our guest’s

ting woody stems of creeping rosemary will not be filled in by new growth. Several smaller shrubs such as brit-tle bush, autumn sage, and Mexican honeysuckle benefit from being cut to six inches above the ground annually. They don’t require any follow-up thinning of the new growth. Cutting frost-damaged plants back close to the ground after the danger of frost has passed in spring rejuvenates lantana and red bird of paradise.

A less severe approach to rejuvenating shrubs is to remove half or more of the older unproductive branches at the base of the plant or those growing into the canopy. This thins out the plant to a much greater

extent than regular maintenance pruning. Follow-up care requires removing a portion of the new shoots a couple of weeks later, which might be too numerous and result in an overly dense canopy. The third method of rejuvenation spans three to four years and is less noticeable. About one third to a quarter of the oldest unproductive branches are removed each year. This method requires thinning excess branches and cutting back the remaining new branches as described before.

Attention All Residents… All Vehicles With Trailers Must Use East Gate:

Please tell your landscapers and others using trailers to enter at the East gate, rather than the West

gate. Some, not all, have trailers that have a rear platform/ramp that catches the arm when they go

through. These are the real culprits to knocking down the arms. Thank you.

May 15, 2014 Dear Neighbors, Our beautiful Tucson spring weather is here and that means it's time to evaluate the exterior ap-pearance of our homes. You may have noticed that some of your neighbors have recently painted their homes using the colors from the newly approved paint palette. We would like to thank these homeowners for enhancing the beauty of our outstanding community.

Sun exposure and quality of the paint and application affect how long paint will last. Unfortunately, there are homes in our community that have not been repainted in quite some time. A fresh coat of paint enhances our community's beauty, while also protecting the structure of your house. As home-owners, it is our responsibility to maintain the exterior appearance of our homes.

If any of the following applies to your home including doors, garage doors, gates, fences and walls then we recommend painting your home.

• Paint is chipping, fading, discolored or mismatched

• Stucco repairs have not been painted

• Garage door replacement has not been painted to match house/trim color

To begin, you must choose colors from the approved color palette, which is available either online at http://www.dunnedwards.com/Homeowners/ExploreColor/ColorTools/ColorArchive.aspx or from the color chip sample book available from Valerie Galello at (520) 982–6188.

Once you have chosen your colors, submit a DRC Submittal Form through Cadden Management. The form is available at: http://www.lakesatcastlerock.com/Design_Review_Committee_Submittal_Form_Revision_June_2013.pdf

You will also need to paint a 2 ft. x 2 ft. color sample on a side of your house that is visible from the street so that the DRC members may review it for approval. This sample allows you to see how the color will actually look on your house, as website colors and color chips may look different than the finished project. Once the DRC approves your color choices you will be notified by Cadden Manage-ment to proceed with the painting of your home.

The HOA Board thanks you for keeping our community looking beautiful. If you have any questions, please contact our Manager, Daniel Castillo at Cadden Management (520) 297-0797. Thank you,

The Lakes at Castle Rock HOA
