General-Fellgiebel barracks in Pöcking 70 Ecoguss ®-

When dealing with the renovation or new construction of sani-

tary rooms, many designers still specify drains made in cast

iron. The example set by the General-Fellgiebel barracks in

Bavaria shows that it can be done otherwise. The new Eco-

guss floor drain produced by drainage specialist KESSEL

which was used there is an inexpensive alternative which

shows a whole series of benefits in both installation and

maintenance.

The General-Fellgiebel barracks in Pöcking near the StarnbergerSee is a place for studying as well as exercising. The NeubibergArmy University is affiliated to the barracks. In order to offer thestudents more space and comfort, the existing residences wereextensively renovated. This also included complete renovation ofthe sanitary rooms. Amongst other things, 60 showers needed tobe reconditioned and 70 floor drains needed to be replaced. Thereason for this was that the old cast-iron drains had corroded andbecome leaky after decades of extensive use. This allowed theodour traps to run empty. A typical result was that unappealingodours were rife, germs and bacteria formed on the floor drainsurfaces.

Optimum fire and smoke protectionTraditionally, cast iron is specified in property building for reasonsof preventive fire protection. Originally, cast-iron drains were alsointended for the Fellgiebel barracks. The new Ecoguss floor drainproduced by the think-tank from Lenting near Ingolstadt was,however, able to convince the client to make the decision for thematerial of the same name. This is because Ecoguss fulfils all cur-rent fire prevention regulations, but is corrosion-free and conside-rably lighter than cast-iron. A crucial factor in the decision wasthat Ecoguss shows the same benefits in fire protection as castiron, but has a considerably longer service life. The "Fire-Kit" fireprotection insert which was also installed in Pöcking protects Eco-guss optimally from fire and smoke gas because the drain fulfilsthe requirements of Fire Resistance Class F 120.

Light weight, rapid installationThe first benefit during installation was the low material weight."This allowed us to transport several drains simultaneously to theinstallation locations" said Christian Melzl of Melzl HeizungsbauGmbH, who was responsible for the installation. "That wouldn'thave been possible with heavy cast iron drains. This saved us a lotof time during installation. And, of course, low weight made instal-lation easier. Thanks to Ecoguss, we have found a high-qualitydrain which is cheaper than cast iron."

Lower processing costs due to compactoutlet shapeThe compact shape of the outlet results in lower installation costs.With a diameter of 160 mm, Ecoguss is around two thirds moreslender than a comparable cast iron drain. "This means that thecore drilling size is reduced, and the corresponding costs are con-siderably lower than those for comparable cast-iron drains"explains Mr Melzl. Thanks to the newly, developed "Quick-Fit" all-round seal, the gap between core drilling and drain no longerneeds to be sealed off with mortar. This seal ensures that the con-nections are smoke gas-proof as required, which means that mor-tar filling is no longer needed. Ecoguss is completely compatiblewith all cast-iron piping systems and has been installed in Pöckingat outer diameters of Ø 58 and 110.

Inexpensive cleaning thanks to“Lock & Lift“ systemThe drain helps to save costs during daily operation. The timerequired for weekly cleaning is considerably reduced. Thanks tothe integrated Lock & Lift locking system, the personnel can open,remove and reclose the cover with one twist. This means a reduc-tion in cleaning times of around two-thirds in comparison withcovers which are closed using two screws. "Time-consuming uns-crewing and screwing up again is no longer necessary - thatmakes cleaning easier and reduces costs considerably. In addition,the cleaners no longer run the risk of cutting themselves on sharp-edged fixing screws" explains Mr Melzl.

High-tech material combines advantagesof polymer and cast ironThe new material is the result of years of research and develop-ment work at KESSEL. The company designed the high-tech mate-rial in intensive cooperation with its raw material suppliers. For thedesigners, the most important thing was to find a material whichsolved the corrosion problems suffered by cast iron. "After we hadcarried out numerous tests, we were able in the end to develop acomposite material based on metals. Ecoguss combines the bene-fits of polymer and cast iron, but reduces construction costs. Thishelps, because low construction costs are becoming more andmore important for investors in large buildings" according to pro-duct manager Mark Jung.

Can be combined with all upper sectionsThanks to the modular system used by KESSEL, Ecoguss can becombined with all upper sections used by the KESSEL bathroomcollection. For the barracks in Bavaria, this means that the drainswere fitted with upper sections in slotted cover design. Even if thestudents aren't aware of the technical innovations underneaththeir feet when they're showering, at least they can enjoy the opti-cally appealing covers.
