AOB OPPORTUNITY

Since CFHT has unquestionably the wor1d's best adaptive optics system in routine operation, we now have a competitive edge that should be exploited. Having spent several nights with AOB during commissioning, I feel very excited at seeing the dawn of a new era in optical astronomy, one in which we complain when the seeing is worse than 0.1" or 0.2" rather than 1"! Not only do these images provide more structural information, motions are more easily measured too: e.g., proper motions of stars in orbit about the galactic centre can be measured after only one year!

The adaptive optics bonnettte (AOB) can be used either in the visible with FOCAM and a CCD, or in the infrared with the new KIR camera (1024x1024) being built by the Universite de Montreal. In both cases the pixel scales are

- 2-

near 0.04". Guide stars should be within about 30" of the target object (maximum distance 45") and brighter than about 14th mag for full correction (the limit is about 16.5). Details of the instrument and expected performance for various possibilities are available on the web at:-@ http://www.cfht.hawaii.edulmanualslaoblao.html@.

To reiterate, AOB offers a unique opportunity to obtain high-resolution images comparable to those obtained by HST. Later this year, the new OASIS spectrograph, designed to work with the AOB in the visible region, will provide spectroscopic capabilities. I urge everyone to consider these new opportunities.

Canadian Astronomical Society

A Report for Semester 96-B and its Extension

(1 Aug.1996 to 28 Feb.1997) from the Canadian Time Allocation Group (C-TAG)

for the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT)

The 15-metre JCMT, the largest facility in the world designed specifically to operate at submillimeter wavelengths, has receivers that observe at wavelengths from 2 millimetres (150 GHz) to 350 microns (860 GHz) for continuum observations, and from 1.4 millimetres (215 GHz) to 430 microns (690 GHz) for line observations.

SEMESTER 96-B and its 96-B-EXTENSION

There are normally two observing semesters per calendar year. For 1996, the semesters are 96A and 96B. However, part of 96B was set aside specifically for proposals for the new instrument SCUBA, and labelled 96B-Extension.

Each JCMT proposal from Canada is normally sent to two scientific referees, as well as to one technical referee (at the Joint Astronomy Centre in Hilo). Reminders to referees who were slow to respond this time helped us to achieve a fairly high response rate, 89% for 96-B, and 720/0 for 96-B-extension. Using this information, the proposals are assessed and graded by the C-TAG members.

For Semester 96-B and 96-B-Extension, the CTAC members were Dr. Bill McCutcheon (UBCNancouver, Chair), Dr. Paul Feldman (HIA-Ottawa), Dr. T.I. Hasegawa (St. Mary's/Halifax) , Dr. L.A. Higgs (HIAlPenticton), and Dr. D. Puche (formerly of M3i SystemsIMontreal). The C-TAG Technical Secretary is Dr. Jacques Vallee (HIA-Victoria).

Statistics for the time requested versus the time available for Canada are as follows. For Semester 96-B, there were 32 Cdn applications requesting 96 shifts (of 8 hours each), and only 25 shifts were available for Canada. In semester 96-B-extension, there were 34 Cdn applications requesting 63 shifts, and only about 22 shifts were available for Canada. Thus combining Semester 96-B and 96-B-Extension, we get an oversubscription ratio of time requestedltime available of about 3.4.

Societe Canadienne d'Astronomie

Hasegawa (St.Mary's/Halifax), Dr. L.A. Higgs (IHAlPenticton), et Dr. Daniel Puche (anciennement de M3i SystemsIMontreal). Le Secretaire Technique du GAT -C est Ie Dr. J.P. Vallee (I HANictoria).

At the "administrative level", some changes have been implemented and other topics are being discussed. The C-TAG headquarters moved to Victoria from Ottawa, where new Observing Proposals must now be sent. The HIA-Victoria is close to the point of implementing electronic submission in one form or another (more details later). Electronic submission will have an earlier deadline than paper submission, to allow for inevitable problems in printing the files and figures.

Notes for the upcoming Semester 97 -A (1 Mar.'97 to 31 July'97)

Observing Proposals requesting JCMT time for Semester 97 A must be RECEIVED in Victoria on or before 10 January 1997 at:

JCMT C-TAG, c/o Director General's Office, NRCC-HIA, 5071 West Saanich Rd., Victoria, BC, Canada vax 4M6.

It is anticipated that the JCMT will re-align its observing semester and proposal deadline with CFHT and with major UK telescopes from Semester 97 -B. Readers can retrieve the latest JCMT APPLICATION FORM on the web at: http://www.jach.hawaii.edulJCMTlapplications.html.

where they can also get tips on writing Observing Proposals.

At the time of writing, the following instruments are available for Semester 97 -A: A-band line rx, B-band line rx, C-band line rx, SCUBA continuum rx.

Recent scientific results can be read in the latest issue of the 'The JCMT Newsletter", also obtainable at HIA-Victoria or on the web at: http://www.jach.hawaii.edulJCMTlhome.html

THE E-PAGES I LES PAGES-E ELECTRONIC ASTROPHYSICAL INTERLINKED ASTRONOMY

JOURNAL DEBUTS RESOURCES

The full Astrophysical Journal is now on line beginning with the 1 January issue at: http://www.joumals.uchicago.edulApJI Like the ApJ Letters, it features links to references as well as to citations and contains all the material contained in the paper version.

A number of astronomical joumals, data centers and the NASA/Astrophysics Data System (ADS) officially launched an infonnal collaboration at the Toronto AAS meeting. Named Urania, the distributed digital resources are effectively interlinked to provide astronomers smooth functionality between the various electroniC resources. The joumals will follow the functionality of the electronic AstrophYSical Journal, relying upon the bibliographic infonnation in the ADS to provide access to the abstracts, images of the older journal papers, and data. Similarly, from the object oriented data centers, access to the original artides will also be a simple matter of one or two hypertext links.

Institutional licenses allow anyone at the institution to read the joumal. Personal, password-controlled member subscriptions are available for $80; this makes the journal accessible from any computer on the Internet. Free access will be permitted during the next two months, after which a subscription will be required to access the electronic version.

Subscription inquiries and orders should be directed to Sharon Savoy at [email protected].

More infonnation is available at: http://www.aas.orgIUraniai
