LET THEM EAT CAKEThe Great Cassington Bake Off 2014 . Nothing tastes finer than tea from good china! This slogan, from Elaine Laver’s Reading based company ‘Pretty Vintage Things’ (www .prettyvintagethings .co .uk), was certainly put to the test in Cassington on the last rainy Sunday in April . How our spirits were lifted as the decorative bunting, floral table cloths, vintage props, sparkling china and a stunning array of cakes caught our eyes as we entered the transformed pavilion . We know from experience that Cassington folk love to rise to a challenge and with a little help from the bicarbonate of soda this had been taken very literally on this occasion!

The judging panel comprised our very own Celebrity Chefs Karina Stafford and Nav Dey, along with Rich Constance and Glenda Shaw . Overall winner(s) received a cash prize of £50 and congratulations go to Hannah Farncombe and Bonnie Harvey who shared this honour .

Winners and runners up in each category received special Cassington Bake Off rosettes and prizes:

Pre-School: Beatrice Hutton (Cherry Bakewell) and Abbie Morton (Sugar Free Banana Muffin)

Primary School: Kizzie Berry (A Very Berry Cake) and Matilda Bishop (Sticky Gingerbread)

Secondary School: Bonnie Harvey (Victoria Sponge) and Connie Rogers (Mocha Cake)

Adult: Hannah Farncombe and Anne Luttman-Johnson (traditional Fruit Cakes)

And then there were further awards for the judges’ individual favourites, known only to them as numbers at the time of judging (so no favouritism, folks):

Rich Constance: Lorna PettyKarina Stafford: Fern HintonNav Dey: Ellen O’Donnell . (continued on page 2)

(continued from front page) The Sports and Social Club, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, was delighted that the event proved so popular and that everyone who attended could see the pavilion at its best . We try very hard to raise funds through village events, the regular meat draw at the Red Lion on a Saturday night, and sports club subscriptions . With this we finance the sports facilities, the maintenance of the field, the increasingly aging mower and what was after all a building generously gifted and built by members of the village community . How wonderful it was then to see the village community out in such force .

Thank you to Elaine for the loan of her beautiful ‘vintage things’; to the judges for their time and taste buds; to everyone on the committee who managed the event; to those who baked; and most importantly to those of you who, on an otherwise wet and miserable Sunday afternoon, turned up so supportively and in force for tea! How quintessentially English we were!

Bridget Sherlock (on behalf of CSSC)

Thank you CarolynFor as long as many of us have been in the village, reading CAWN, the same two names (Carolyn Hinton and Nicky Copelin) have been at the back of each edition, inviting and enticing the rest of us to reserve tickets to a wonderful variety of Village Hall events to suit all ages . Carolyn has recently passed on the role of Events Manager on the Village Hall committee to Ruth Bakewell, and before too much time passes it is time we thanked her for all she has done to enrich the cultural experiences of those of us living in the village .

It was not unusual for her to have cooked a meal for a theatre group, set up the hall in advance of a performance, and then to be selling tickets on the door, introducing the event, drawing a raffle at the interval, and then seeing the company out at the end of the evening once their set was neatly packed into their vehicle . Often Kevin and combinations of the children would be running the refreshments, and of course doing without Carolyn for yet another Friday/Saturday/Sunday evening or afternoon .

Good luck to Ruth in taking on the role, and of course to Nicky in continuing to support the role so brilliantly, and finally from all of us in the Cassington community, a HUGE thanks to Carolyn and all of the Hintons for all that you have done (and haven’t been able to do because of what you have done) – and for what, no doubt, you will continue to do!

Desert Island DiscsLast month’s castaway was Elspeth Ferriday . There were several correct answers but the first person who emailed was Janet Bushnell . Castaways get to pick their eight favourite pieces of music (of any genre) along with a favourite book and a ‘luxury’ item . Here’s this month’s .Music is a big part of my life and this is just about as tough a task as you can get – picking eight tracks from the hundreds of albums I have . I tried to be true to my memory and hopefully I have thrown in a few clues as to who I am .1. Theme tune to Robinson Crusoe – Robin Mellin and

Gian-Piero Reverbi . This takes me back to my early childhood – I couldn’t wait to get home from

school to watch the programme on a tiny, grainy black and white TV . I longed for the days when I would have adventures just like Robinson . Every time I hear the haunting intro I can picture Robinson purposefully

walking along the sandy white beach, looking out over the waves .

2. Tutti Frutti – Little Richard . From a very early age I started to listen to music courtesy of my parents, who were mad about rock and roll . I could have chosen so many from that time of my life, but it has to be this . I love the film Don’t Knock the Rock – Little Richard stood at his piano, hammering out the song – 12 bar blues at its very best!3. Long after tonight is all over – Jimmy Radcliffe . The end of the night floor-filler from my days as a wannabe soul dancer at Wigan Casino all nighters . This is the last of the famous ‘three before eight’ – a trilogy of songs always played in strict order just before the casino closed (at eight o’clock in the morning!) . Bowling shirts, Oxford bags and loafers, all accompanied by hours of practice to get the spins and back-drops just right!4. Thick as Thieves – The Jam . The Jam always played their gigs at seaside venues . We were mad about them and couldn’t wait for them to tour, so this brings back happy memories of getting on the train with a load of mates to go to Bridlington to watch them at the Spa, or to see them at Butlins holiday camp in Skegvegas! The track just shouts friendship to me and reminds me of all the great people I grew up with and of being a care free teenager .5. Sir Duke – Stevie Wonder . My pick from the album that should be in everyone’s collection Songs in the Key of Life . I grew up with Tamla Motown music and Stevie Wonder was already well known to me but it was not until I bought this album that I understood his talent . The man is a musical genius – the horn section is inspired and the whole feel is joyous – makes me want to dance and I usually do!6. Still in Love with You – Thin Lizzy (from Live & Dangerous) . The best ballads come from rock bands and this is the best of the lot . There is nobody who does not identify with the lyrics and the guitar work is sublime . I remember seeing them play this on the tour and just getting lost in the moment, to this day I still regard this as one of the best songs

I have ever heard live .7. Thunder Road – Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band . The Boss has become so much more than music to me; I spend hours listening to him and I have seen him more times than I can remember . The harmonica intro still makes the hairs on my neck stand on end and I love joining in at the top of my voice ‘Screen door slams, Mary’s dress sways . Like a vision she dances across the porch, as the radio plays …’8. Teo Torriate (Let us cling together) – Queen (from A Day at the Races) . Simply because it is the song I think of whenever I think about the love of my life (which is another brilliant Queen track by the way)!Choosing a book is almost as hard as picking the music! If pushed I would have to pick the complete novels of George Orwell, whose writing and politics I have always identified with – I can’t think why . Shakespeare’s complete works would be most welcome, but can I swap the Bible for A Kestrel for Knave by Barry Hines? Again, a book which I can identify with very easily . My luxury item would be a telescope – I could look at all aspects of island life, day and night and keep an eye out for the boat that would be coming to deliver news of the Boss’s new album and world tour! My sincere apologies to Elvis, the Beatles, AC/DC, Paul Rodgers, Rory, Graham Parker, Bob Marley, SRV . . . Can I have another ten goes please?

Namaskara(That’s ‘Hello’ in Kannada, the local language in my village) So after ten incredible weeks, I am now back in Cassington, ready to tell you my story . . .

It began with the (very long) flight . Naturally it was sad to say goodbye to friends and family, but what an adventure I had in front of me . I had no idea what the next two and half months had in store, but it was everything I wanted, plus so much more .

My home was a tiny tribal community called Mahadeswara, where I worked on a water and sanitation project with Raleigh and our project partner, MYKAPS . During my time in India, I taught in six different schools, delivering essential healthcare lessons to more than 300 children . We also supported women’s SHGs, set up a youth group, created a weekly sports club, formed a litter-picking club, taught English, planted trees, held well-being days (dental, eye and vet camps), held a daily toothbrush club, took part in cultural exchange, did a homestay, built nine toilets, eight bathrooms and a rainwater harvesting system for the primary school in our village, the list goes on . . .

My team consisted of six English volunteers, five Indian volunteers and two team leaders (one English, one Indian) . They became my family; it’s crazy how close you can get to people when you spend 24 hours of the day together . We all worked hard, communicated well, and took care of each other through the difficult moments . Being a part of Raleigh gave me the opportunity to create some amazing lifelong friendships and although it pushed me out of my comfort zone (a lot!) I do believe it has made me a more understanding, confident, open person . I could go on and on about how much I enjoyed my time in India but really I think you should experience it for yourself . So if you are between 18 and 25 then apply to ICS! Hand on heart it’s the best thing I have ever done .

Lastly I would like to thank everyone who supported me by donating; without your help I wouldn’t have met Mahadeswara and achieved the things I did . I really cannot express enough how grateful I am and I hope that my experience inspires you to volunteer, whether abroad or closer to home, because your help really can make a difference .

I have made a video about my experience, which you can watch at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNuyymQzdIo . If you would like to know more about my experience or are interested in applying for the programme then please feel free to ask me any questions

Cassington allotmentsIn recent weeks several allotment holders have again had to endure the foul remains left by dogs on the allotment gardens . The site has thankfully been free from canine waste for a few years after previous complaints . However it would seem that some thoughtless owners are once again allowing this unacceptable behaviour . The Cassington allotments are situated on private land owned by Blenheim Estates, which is leased to the Allotment Association for the cultivation of crops . As an association we have, up til now, allowed anyone, including dog owners, to walk through the site, so long as people keep to the main path, dogs are kept on a lead and respect is given to the area as a food-growing environment that is maintained by plot holders with a great deal of time and expense . Unfortunately if the dog fouling continues the association will be forced to restrict future access to the site .

Adrian Tyler, Cassington Allotments Association Secretary

Musical CelebrationWe’re delighted to say the village Musical Celebration on Friday 16th May played to a full house with, by all accounts, the evening enjoyed by all . MC Bryan Partridge introduced a variety of performances including singing from the St Peter’s School Choir, Cassington Singers and Octavia; piano solos from Harry Linnell, Miriame Mostefai and Daniel Lay; a harp solo by Roseanna Partridge, and flute solos by Lorna Petty who also sang two solos with the St Peter’s School Choir . We were entertained by two lively groups of musicians: the visiting clarinet group ‘Pipework’, and our own ‘Jazzabelles’ Catriona Lewis, Sally Price and Janet Bushnell . We saw an energetic and carefully choreographed number by the clergy team and a display of Spanish dance by school dinner lady Rocio Rivero, and were encouraged to join in with Ron Macdonald and Adie Gregory’s ‘Credence Clearwater Survival’ . The evening was rounded off with a sing-along of First World War songs, enthusiastically led by the school choir .

The evening was held in aid of St Peter’s School and St Peter’s Church, and raised approximately £600 . With thanks to everyone who came to support the event, to all our singers and musicians and to everyone who worked behind the scenes, but especially to the St Peter’s School Association who provided an excellent supper, Bryan Partridge our MC, Janet Bushnell and John Hemingway our accompanists and, of course, to Elspeth Ferriday for her encouragement and tireless patience as she prepared all of our choirs for performance .

Eynsham Art TrailThe search is on to find community artists to design way-markers for a new Art Trail in Eynsham that celebrates the village’s centuries-old Wharf Stream .

The way-markers will be 5ft tall oak posts and designs will be carved into each by a professional . The way-markers will be installed at intervals along the newly developed Wharf Stream Way, which links east Eynsham to the River Thames .

Local volunteers have been working since 2006 to open up the Wharf Stream and the project complements their work . Local artists Jane Tomlinson and Lorna Marrison have created brightly painted A1-size information panels which will be placed at the start of the trail, in Swinford Green, and its end, near the Wharf Stream . The artists’ panels depict not only the route and its fascinating history, but also some of the flora and fauna that can be seen along the trail, which is around a mile long . These panels will be installed during the summer, followed by the way-markers later in the year .

Artists, schools and community groups are encouraged to contact the District Council for a brief and to find out more about the project before submitting designs . The deadline for designs is 7 July, when designs from three different groups will be chosen; each will receive £250 . For more information about the project, email heather .mcculloch@westoxon .gov .uk or call 01993 861562 .

Scheme to protect vulnerableWest Oxfordshire residents are being encouraged to identify vulnerable and elderly neighbours in their community as part of a scheme set up to offer extra reassurance .

Officers from West Oxfordshire neighbourhood police teams will be visiting vulnerable residents to introduce themselves as a point of contact for any concerns they may have .

West Oxfordshire Neighbourhood Inspector Ollie Holland explains: “Vulnerable and elderly residents often feel they don’t want to bother anyone or be a burden but we want to make sure they know they can contact their local police team if they have any issues . We work hard with our partners such as Trading Standards to reduce doorstep crime and this is a key part of getting that prevention message across . Each resident we visit will receive a pack containing information on protecting yourself from bogus callers and general advice on home and personal security so if you know anyone who could benefit from this scheme please contact us .”

The West Oxfordshire Community Safety Partnership has compiled the packs which contain:• Leaflets on improving home security• Trading Standards ‘no cold callers’ stickers• Purse bell to prevent thefts from handbags• Nominate a Neighbour cards which refer unknown

visitors to a designated neighbour who can check their identification to ensure the caller is genuine . They can also supervise the visit .

• The Lions ‘message in a bottle’ which is stored in the fridge and contains medical details for paramedics to use in times of emergencies .Any residents who wish to add a neighbour, relative

or themselves to the scheme should telephone the non-emergency police number, 101, and ask for their neighbourhood police team .

Oxfordshire trading standardsAs a result of a recent Rogue Trader Operation carried out nationally, Oxfordshire Trading Standards would like your help in obtaining information to collate figures for our area .

Officers would like to receive information from anyone living in the area who has received a leaflet through their door in the last week or receives one within the next few weeks from traders offering to do home or garden maintenance work . If you have received a leaflet recently and still have it, please put your address and contact details on the back and send it to Trading Standards, Graham Hill House, Electric Avenue, Ferry Hinksey Road, Oxford, OX2 0BY or call 0845 051 0845 option 2, with details .

They would also be interested to hear from anyone who has been cold called over the last few weeks and either had or arranged for work to be carried out . When reporting information please try to provide descriptions of callers and details of their vehicle if they have one, including colour, make/model and a registration number, thank you .

NEW

VENUE

There be dragons in Eynsham Village! It’s all happening at the Eynsham Carnival and Craft Fair this coming July 5th . At 12 .15pm competitors in the famous Shirt Race will entertain onlookers with their fancy dress costumes and homemade wheeled ‘prams’ whilst navigating a course that takes in local watering holes . Then the Carnival Parade, led by the Carnival Queen, will travel through the streets to arrive at Eynsham Playing Field for an afternoon of fun and entertainment . This year’s acts, designed with the whole family in mind, include Epico the Dragon – a charming street theatre act featuring Sir Aurelious Jones and animatronic puppetry .

Staying with the animal theme, the Blackrock Llamas will be showing off their skills and talents as they complete a testing obstacle course, jumping hurdles, zig-zagging through weaving poles, ducking under limbo bars and negotiating hanging vines . A truly unique, exciting, action-packed display .

Other events include an ‘open mic’ stage for under 18s (please book your spot in the limelight ahead of time), Go-Karts, Crazy Golf, Old Mini and Motorbike display, Charlie the Clown and many more . With a large craft marquee, fun fair, barbecue and beer tent, there really is something for everyone .

Tickets for the field event are £5 (adults)/£3 (children) with under 5s free . Visit www.eynshamcarnival.com for the latest news on the line up of acts and other useful information .

Roy’s RamblingsNo, I have not retired from my ramblings . Firstly I would like to thank Mike Linnell and Martin Rodgers for the amount of work they have put in to the alms houses since the flood due to the burst water main . I know Martin got wet feet when he found the burst!

Also thanks to all the folk who do the mowing around the village – the lower green looks better than the main green at the moment but we will win eventually, though the grass seems to have really taken off . How I wish we had charged more for cutting round the posts by the school; they are an absolute pest . Never mind, I will manage for this year, though I don’t think at 90 I will be able to cope .

Please village hall get some of your folks to sweep up . I don’t think it has been done since I did it some time ago . Rubbish stacked by the bins – and I know I am an old moaner – does not look good .

How nice it would be if someone in the village would volunteer to clean and paint the church gates . Also, if the gent who parks his Volkswagen (unofficially) in the church parking area could please park closer to the wall on his right so as not to take up two places that would be good .

Let us hope summer has arrived as it has not been a bad weekend .

Players wanted at Wytham Cricket Club2014 season now playingCricket has been played in Wytham for over 100 years, and for at least 55 unbroken years by the club in its current form . We play friendly fixtures only (although that means non-league rather than non-competitive) and enjoy promoting the village of Wytham and the spirit of cricket .

Each summer we play somewhere between 20 and 30 fixtures . Most are weekend (usually Sunday) games, with some midweek evenings . The club operates all year with regular informal social events and excuses to get out and indulge ourselves (recent events include trips to London, mountain biking, and supporting the annual Wytham Village Fireworks Display) .

The club has a varied membership and we welcome players, both regular and irregular . We are actively recruiting new players for the 2014 season; all standards and experience are welcome . Nets are held at Wytham Village Hall every Wednesday from 6pm . Prospective members are welcome to come along and make themselves known to the Committee at nets .

Equally you can contact Tom Hollis (Club Captain) on: 07900 910955 or via: skip@wythamcricket .org

We look forward to sharing the most English of all possible village cricket experiences with you very soon .

Faithful, fickle or frigid?I’m talking about our attitudes towards the democratic process of this country .

By the time that you read this ‘we’ will have voted in the European and local elections, but how many of us will actually have voted?

Some people are ‘faithful’ to the process of democratic elections and many of these faithful to a particular party which represents an ideology that they identify with . Sadly (in my opinion) many voters are ‘fickle’ They will vote one way and then, when policies affect them negatively, they jump ship and vote for the promises of another party even when that other party has no viable policies at all . Lastly there are many who are ‘frigid’, not voting at all because they are disillusioned or disinterested .

It is easy to forget the price that was paid for our freedom and our democracy in the twentieth century, whether in the trenches of Belgium and France or by Suffragettes such as Emily Davison, who threw herself under the king’s horse at the Epsom Derby on 4th June 1913 .

Another campaigner for women’s rights, and particularly their right to vote, was Emmeline Pankhurst, who died on 14th June 1928 . Emmeline Pankhurst lived just long enough to enjoy the passing of the Representation of the People Act,

which gave voting rights to all women over 30 . (Shortly after her death full equal voting rights were given to all over 21 .)

In young democracies we often see people walking many miles in terrible conditions to exercise their democratic right to vote, sometimes waiting hours in long queues .

Seeing our democratic heritage and sacrifices made to establish democracy in our country how can any one of us reject our democratic right to vote faithfully? It is both a privilege and a duty .

Whether you consider this country to be a Christian one or not, equality is a Christian principle . In the Bible, writing to the church in Galatia, St Paul says:

‘So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptised into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ . There is neither Jew nor Gentile,

neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus .’ (Galatians 3: 26–28; page 211 in your Jubilee New Testament) .

The Bible asserts that we are all made in God’s image, male and female . Even in this ‘Christian country’ we have been a bit slow picking this up . But, having established the point in our democratic system, let us not neglect that which is our birthright and our hard won privilege .

ResolutionDue to the early deadline for CAWN this month I will tell you what is planned . John Hodges will be talking to us about the local Stroke

Association, which is a UK charity that supports stroke survivors, families and their carers .

We’ll then move on to the main meeting when we will discuss the National WI Resolution of organ donation . Countrywide, WI members are encouraged to become organ donors . Three people die every day whilst waiting for an organ transplant when one donor can transform up to nine different people’s lives . There is an organ donation register, which is a confidental computerised database recording people’s wishes .

Our next Meeting will be on June 19th and will be about care and finances in later life .

Lost footballHas anybody found a Brazil World Cup 2014 football? It’s white with green, blue and orange swirls . We think it was left on Conse walk between the school and the village hall . It isn’t an expensive ball but was given to Paddy by his uncle, who he doesn’t see very often . We would be really grateful if anyone who finds it could either let me know and I will come and collect it or drop it into school .

St Peter’s Church of England Primary SchoolHeadteacher Mrs Jeanette A. G. Millward MA(Ed)Tel. 01865 880443; Email: [email protected]; www.st-peters.oxon.sch.uk

June 2014I am hoping that by the time you read this, St Peter’s Church of England Primary School will officially have become an academy as part of the Eynsham Partnership Academy. We are so pleased to have converted to join our friends at Bartholomew, Eynsham, Stanton Harcourt, Standlake, Freeland and Long Hanborough and we are really looking forward to working with them.

ToilETsYou may have noticed, if you walk through the village, that we had builders in the school over the Easter holidays. They were refurbishing our junior toilets including modernising the fixtures

and giving them a fresh coat of paint. On the return from the holidays the children, and staff, were very pleased with the result especially as the children

had a part to play in choosing the colours. We decided that one way to show our appreciation was to consider those schools in other countries that do not have toilets. After investigation we found a way of ‘twinning’ our new toilets with those in another country, donating money so that a toilet block could be built. We decided to have a ‘dress down day’ and chose the theme of pink and blue to go with our new toilets colour scheme.

We managed to raise a total of £240 and are supporting a school in Bredjing, Chad, Africa.

inTrEpid sTaffLast weekend some of the gallant staff from our school took on the challenge of raising money for charity. Mrs Linda

Carpenter, our Administrator, organised a group consisting of Mrs Julie Howe, Miss Hayley Bennett and Mrs Jennifer Miles to join in the Pink Ribbon Walk around Blenheim for the Breast Cancer Care charity. They all completed the walk in good time and it is expected that they will have raised over £400. Another intrepid walker was Mrs Jane Beecher who went to London to join in with the Moonwalk organised by another Breast Cancer charity. Well done to all of them!

sT pETEr’s nursEryWe are now in full swing and are booking places for September for children aged 2 and 3 years. Sessions are going fast so please either drop into school for a form, email or telephone.

inViTaTion To sEE THE nursEry We are aware that some members of the community were unable to come to our official opening in March and therefore did not have the chance to see inside our Nursery. We will be opening the Nursery for an hour on Wednesday 9th July between 6pm and 7pm for a public view. Please put the date in your diaries and come and have a look!

OUR ANNUAL SUMMER FETE AND BARBECUE is on Sunday 29th June . This is always a happy family occasion beginning at about 11 .30am and going through till about 3pm . The lunch is not just a barbecue but a whole array of other great dishes and puddings! There are the usual stalls where you can spend some more of your money to support the Church . FIRST COMMUNION SUNDAY is on 22nd June, when our children will make their Communion for the first time . We hope lots of people will come to support them on their special day . They have been preparing since last December and recently have been very visible taking an active part in our Sunday Mass as they learn more about what actually happens and why .

PENTECOST is the day when Jesus’ friends first got the courage to go out from their locked room and preach about him . They tell of a powerful experience as the Holy Spirit came to them and filled them with joy and courage . The Church celebrates this event on Sunday 9th June but at St Peter’s we will also think of it the following Sunday when we will pray for one of our adults, Nick Hutton, to receive the Holy Spirit in a special way as he is confirmed .

A GARDEN PARTY IN LONG HANBOROUGH on 22nd June is a special must for parishioners from St Peter’s as Nicki and Mark Richardson of 26 Isis Close invite people into their garden from 1pm til 5pm . Proceeds will go to support the work of LIFE which has a drop-in centre for women in Oxford who are wondering whether they should have an abortion . LIFE tries to provide an impartial counselling service and a place to stay for pregnant women who want to keep their babies .

parish notesThe council met on 1st May with three members of the public present . The council wishes to develop a Community Led Plan which is a vision of how Cassington wants to develop in the future and identifies the action needed to achieve it . To this end a representative from the Oxfordshire Rural Community Council has been invited along to explain the process at the Annual Parish Meeting, which will be held on the 12th June in the Village Hall . It was Cllr Clive Wilkinson’s last meeting of the council as he is standing down after some twelve years as councillor, ten years of which have been as Chairman . Cllr Pat Clague thanked him on behalf of the council for his major contribution to the work of the council over the years . Hugh Thomas will be taking over the vacancy from 22nd May . All remaining councillors will be re-elected .It was also West Oxfordshire Cllr Larry Poole’s last meeting and a presentation was made to him by Cllr Claire Martin .

BIKE NIGHTThe council agreed payment of £456 plus VAT to St John’s Ambulance for their attendance at Bike Night . Concern was expressed over the substantially increased charge from last year; therefore future payments will be reviewed annually for First Aid attendance to keep costs under control . The Bike Night copyright is now registered in the Council’s name .

Cllr Thomas is meeting Cassington Landscapes to discuss the removal of shards of bark discovered in the play area and seeking advice from WODC’s Landscape Officer about the play surface .

QUESTIONS FROM THE PUBLICA member of the public asked councillors to investigate a problem with Batimer ditch . Cllrs Clague and Thomas are handling this . It was reported there was a tree blocking the river close to the A40, which caused flooding of the adjoining fields . The Clerk will report this to the Environment Agency, although the landowner is responsible . There was a report of a drain blocked on the pathway near to the village . The Clerk will report this to Highways .

TRAFFICCampaign for speed limit, Yarnton Road . Oxfordshire County Council has completed a traffic speed survey on this road and the results are awaited . Cllr Clague reported on a car accident on this road on the evening of 23rd April .
