Computer concepts covered include: the merger of computer and communication technologies, hardware, software, ethics, and security. Students develop basic software skills in: word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentations, Web designing, and integrating software. Keyboarding skills equivalent to 20 wpm is needed to succeed. Statement of Prerequisites: None Goal: The goal of this course is to provide a broad overview computers and information processing, and to teach basic skills in the Microsoft Office Suite of products. Outcomes: Specific knowledge objectives include: The ability to use MS Word to create and edit documents, letters, envelopes and tables The ability to use MS Excel to create and edit worksheets, and graphs, as well as how to use formulas. The ability to use MS Power-Point to create and edit effective presentations and handouts. The ability to use MS Access to edit and create tables, meaningful relationships, forms, reports and queries. To understand the concepts of using technology both in business and in everyday life.

Methodology: Class content consists of the following areas:

1. This class has two portions, a lecture portion and a lab portion. You will be expected to complete the lab assignments within the text of each of the Microsoft Office Chapters ( 2 each for Word, Power Point, Excel, Access and one Integration). Each assignment is worth 10 points ( 90 points possible)

2. Two major projects will be assigned during the semester, the first, a Research Paper, should be done in the MLA format covered in Chapter 2 of the Word section of the text book. This project will be due shortly before midterm. The second, a database, will be an individual project and will be due the week before the final exam. Each project is worth 100 points. (200 points possible)

3. There will be at least one assignment for each chapter of the textbook. Each assignment is worth 10 points. (170 points possible)

4. Each chapter will have a 10 question quiz worth 10 points (140 points possible) 5. A midterm exam will be given during the semester and will cover specified chapters and

modules discussed. The exam is worth 100 points. 6. The final exam (given according to the college schedule for final exam week) is cumulative.

Approximately 2/3 of the exam will come from the most recent chapters and modules with the remaining 1/3 from chapters covered in the midterm exams. The final exam will follow the same format as the midterm exam and will also be worth 200 points.

Evaluation Criteria: Grades will be assignment on a total percentage basis. All points for the class will be added and a percentage figured against total possible points.
