CIntroduction W William Caslon, the rst of a family of English type founders, was born at

Cradley, Worcestershire in 1692, and in 1716 started business in London as an engraver of gun locks and barrels, and as a bookbinder's tool-cutter.

Being thus brought into contact with printers,he was induced to t up a type foundry, largely through the encouragement of printer William Bowyer. e distinction and legibility of his type secured him the patronage of the leading printers of the day in England and on the continent. e use of Caslon types, discontinued about the beginning of the 19th century, was revived about 1845 at the suggestion of Sir Henry Cole, and used for printing the Diary of Lady Willoughby (a pseudo 17th century story) by the Chiswick Press. e head line on this page is "Caslon Old Face."

He died on the 23rd of January 1766. His son, William Caslon (1720-1778), who had been partner with his father for some years, continued the business. e original printing of the American Declaration of Independence was set with Caslon type, and derivatives of these typefaces continue to be used as computer fonts.DTW William Caslon, the rst of a family of English type founders, was born at

William Caslon established the rst major English typefoundry, re-creating earlier Dutch designs with excellent craftsmanship, color and rhythm.

Caslon Old Face is one of many faithful revivals; the original matrices (from many hands; the lowercase of the 48 point is Moxon’s 1669 Great Canon) survive at Stephenson Blake. George Ostrochulski adapted this design for photocomposition at Mergenthaler with skill and understanding.W Z

Caslon 471Caslon 471 was designed by the sta of American Type Founders as their rst revival of Caslon. It is based on the Old Style No. 1 typeface used in an 1865 specimen book from the L.J. Johnson foundry in Philadelphia.

Caslon 540Caslon 540 was designed by the sta of American Type Founders and released in 1902. e typeface was originally intended for use in advertising and is based on Caslon 471 with shortened descenders. It does not include a bold weight.

Caslon 3A slighter bolder version of Caslon 540, released by American Type Founders in 1905. BitStream sells Caslon 3 under the name of Caslon Bold.
