Newsletter Issue No 19, Term 4, 29th November, 2019
Principal’s Message
This week we have been lucky enough to meet our
Year 7 cohort for 2020. On Monday afternoon
parents attended an Information Evening and
experienced lessons in PDHPE, English, Agriculture
and HSIE. It was great to see the number of parents
who supported this and it was good to receive some
positive feedback from those who attended.
On Tuesday close to 120 Year 6 students from our
local primary schools participated in Orientation Day.
They toured the school, participated in lessons and
watched a concert featuring some of our talented
students. A special thanks to Bridget Swan who
coordinated the programs during the week and also
to the staff and students who volunteered their time
to ensure that the visiting students had a positive
start to life at Casino High School.
I would like to congratulate all of those Year 12
students who have received offers of Early Entry to
a number of universities in their chosen courses.
This is a fantastic opportunity for these students to
excel in their particular area of interest and enjoy the
tertiary years of their education.
I would also like to thank our Careers Adviser, Mrs
Weir and our Senior Learning Centre Teacher, Mrs
Parker who have both assisted these students with
their applications for University Early Entry and
Scholarships. Mrs Weir, in particular, continues to
work with students in Years 10, 11 and 12 to access
work experience and other opportunities in the local
area.
The final day for students this year is Wednesday 18th December. We have organised an activities day which provides students with a fun day of alternate activities. We encourage all students to attend, participate and make the last day of the school year an enjoyable one.

Academic and Equestrian Success - Isabella Ennever Year 10 This week has been huge for Isabella Ennever both academically
and in the equestrian field.
On Tuesday Isabella received the Southern Cross University
Deputy Vice Chancellor’s Year 10 Academic Excellence Award in
Lismore representing Casino High School.
On Friday Isabella travelled to Warwick Qld to compete in the
Warwick Horse Trials International One Day Event, in the 60cm
Class and won both the Junior Rider and Open Rider Class in that
event. A massive achievement for her and her horse Tommy Tails.
Isabella has also successfully gained a position to attend the
Lizard Island Research Facility hosted by the Australian Museum.
Isabella will conduct laboratory experiments, undertake field work
on the reef, observe coral reef investigations as well as snorkelling
and studying native wildlife. She will have the privilege of working
beside internationally recognised marine biologists.
Isabella will travel to Lizard Island next April
and will be accommodated at the Lizard
Island Resort. Isabella’s application for this
opportunity was based on her personal
reflections on the Great Barrier Reef in the
form of an untitled poem and an informal
essay.
Congratulations Isabella!
Untitled Poem by Isabella Ennever Year 10
Nestled in the bosom of Queensland’s coast
There is a place of natural beauty
One of Freedom!
One of precious vulnerability!
It’s off this coast where the meeting place resides
Where the tentative wandering hands of terrestrial nature,
And the confident demand of the ocean’s voice
Connect in an unequalled, perfect picture.
Past this vicious debate over land and sea
Further into the ocean's tides,
One can see under the blanket of placidity
An ancient civilisation resides.
Within this society millions roam free
Moving from place to place,
Never bound by past or present,
But facing the future with patient pace.
This civilisation has faced cyclones!
Predators of the deep!
It’s faced Mother Nature’s wrath
With determination and upkeep.
Even with the threat of trawlers and oil
And the tentacles of human endeavour,
It upholds integrity and diversity
Withstanding the harshest stormy weather.
The Great Barrier Reef is a sacred sight of nature
The world biodiverse suture,
It is the key to our past
And perhaps so to our future.
The Great Barrier Reef may be swaying
Pressured by the stress of potential catastrophe,
But it’s up to us who have jeopardised it
Who have damaged it’s essential anatomy.
It’s up to us to mend it’s cuts
To cool it’s fever,
To bandage it’s wounds
And to help it recover.
It's up to us to protect it’s irreplaceable value,
And to allow it to flourish once more.

When Colin Fardon was a Year 10 student at Casino High School he attended work experience with cabinet-maker Geoff Hannah in Lismore. This was at the suggestion of the school’s wood technology Teachers and Careers Advisor. (Geoff, a master wood craftsman who is known worldwide for his absolutely incredible fine furniture making talent, has sold pieces of work for up to one million dollars). This work experience changed the path of Colin’s life and from the first day Colin knew that this was without any doubt his future career path. Colin immediately enrolled in Geoff’s classes to learn this much specialised trade. He then spent one day each week learning the art of design, build, carve and inlay timber and stone, French polishing and also joined the local Lapidary Club to learn how to slice and polish his own stone for inlaying in his designs. At age 19 Colin won the ‘Exhibition of Excellence’; an annual exhibition of fine works that was held in Grafton with a cabinet that he designed and built.
In 2010, aged 24 years, Colin held his own solo exhibition at the local Casino ‘Platypus Gallery’. His designs featured timbers and veneers from countries all over the world. His solo exhibition was extremely successful and he sold almost everything that he had on display in the exhibition. Colin has been involved with several exhibitions of fine furniture over the past few years.
Now aged 31 years, Colin’s grandest design to date features along with Geoff Hannah’s exquisite latest creation and the amazing works of Geoff’s other students at the Lismore Art Gallery in an exhibition titled ‘Chesta Drawz and The Lowboys’ which runs until 1st December 2019.
Colin has made an impact at the ‘Chesta Drawz and The Lowboys’ exhibition with the sale on the first day of the exhibition of his collector’s cabinet for $68,000.00. The cabinet which took up to 1200 hours to design and build features exotic timbers from many different countries, 40 drawers, 3 secret compartments and intricately drawn and inlaid birds and scenery inspired by his childhood on his parent’s property. It is also French polished. It is believed that this is the largest commissioned sale ever made at the Lismore Art Gallery.
This all started with woodwork classes at Casino High School. Colin has spent many night time hours in the shed building this cabinet whilst working a day time job for a local joinery and playing in a local band to fund the purchase of the machinery and equipment required to start his own business. He is currently building a shed and is now ready to work in his own full-time business doing the work that he is so passionate about as well as furniture restoration. This is a great example to all young people of what a dream, a passion and lots of hard work can achieve.
